  • Samarkand in Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly popular destination for people across Europe and Asia. I've been staying in the ancient Silk Road city for a week now, and after exploring what Samarkand has to offer, I only have one question - is it more than just a tourist trap?
Explore the city with more and discover some of the most amazing architecture in the world, parks, backstreets, and a good old fashioned burger restaurant!

I believe the white paint on tree trunks is to protect the tree from sunlight (white color reflects more light). The trunks are painted to prevent bark splitting and other heat-related problems. We see this commonly in the US too.

The tree trunks are not painted with white paint, it is lime. Covering trees with lime prevents damage to them by harmful insects and bugs.

That's to save trees from some insects, that crawl up and eat them.

My Polish mother in law paints the trunks of her fruit trees with white lime or something similar. She told me that it stops some insects climbing up them . I don't know if it works.

White paint is against insects. They also paint the curb of sidewalk near houses in white for sane reason.

As far as I can remember, we always paint tree trunks with white lime, firstly to prevent some insects from climbing up and secondly it looks beautiful ... The last statement about beauty is questionable of course ?!

do restaurants accept card in uzbekstan or is it more cash based society?

    • @thetravellingdanuk

It's definitely mostly cash. You might find the odd tourist restaurant which takes card but it is almost completely cash (unfortunately for me)

Samarkand architecture is better than that of Taj mahal, on account of the colours. Taj mahal is plain white.

What a dumb, silly, infantile question - if you behave like a bloody tourist, you will be treated as such.
I speak russian and had lots of educated encounters with the locals.
