  • Our first video on Jason's 2006 Toyota Estima Hybrid AWD. Estima's were sold as Previas and Taragos in other markets but never North America, and the Hybrid model with E-Four AWD was only ever available in Japan. Jason imported a 2006 model into Canada in October of 2022. He replaced the hybrid battery cells in January 2023. No instructions, no local parts support, no problem. One new cell appears to be faulty. Follow along as Jason tears apart this weird JDM van and tests the individual cells to make a warranty claim on the new cell that is causing issues.

    Thankyou so much for documenting your process to get into, test, and swap out the pack elements. I just received my 2009 Estima EfourX last week on the other side of the country, in BC. The pack seems weak. this video is going to save me so much trouble.

    Hope you like my video. Still learning how to film/edit.
    As far as I know there are only a handful of Estima Hybrids in all of Canada and no others on the east coast so repairing this hybrid battery with so little local support is not for the faint of heart. Hopefully videos like this are interesting/helpful. More coming soon. Picking up another JDM vehicle at the train yard in Halifax next month!

    Fantastic video! Not much people even know this pretty model. Thank you very much. And, do you have an idea how to "utilized" more power on the battery rather than petrol please? My 09 Hybrid runs 7.7L/100KM (12.xKM/L) and the engine kicks in very early. Even though, the car doesn't have a good acceleration experience.

    • @JerryZheng-yl2jg
      @JerryZheng-yl2jg Год назад

      And Prius got its Lithium batteries "upgrade kit". Estima doesn't yet....

    • @gearheadsyndrome
      @gearheadsyndrome  Год назад +2

      The estima might be a while before someone figures out the lithium upgrade as the hybrid model wasn't sold alongside the petrol versions anywhere outside of Japan. Fingers crossed though.
      As for your question about the gas engine coming on rather quickly, the hybrid system in these vans is considered a light hybrid with both motors combining for ~22% of the vehicles overall power. Compare that to a 2nd Gen prius where the electric motor produces ~47%. The gas motor will come on with anything other than the lightest acceleration but that doesn't mean the electric motors aren't still helping share the load. My fuel consumption was approaching 9l/100km right before the original toyota batteries failed. After swapping them the van immediately improved to 7.4l/100km so battery capacity is helpful in that regard.
      Still comparable minivans where I am in North America typically get 12l/100km on a good day. The most modern $60,000CAD 2023 Toyota Sienna hybrids average ~7.0l/100km. So you're still doing pretty good!

    Great video.
    Where does the battery fan get it air input from? from under the car? Is there a filter? Did you check how dirty fan etc was ?
    And where does it exit?

    • @gearheadsyndrome
      @gearheadsyndrome  9 месяцев назад

      The fan gets its air from one the dash. There isn't a filter but it can clog with fine dust. Almost like lint. You always take the opportunity to clean them out when doing this. Mine wasn't that bad but I still blasted compressed air in there whole I was at it.

    Thank You so much I need to know all about that van 2006 - 2007 so far I know engine is 2.4 L 2AZ-FXE I4 which is also used at Camry hybrid and transmission type CVT k112 used also by Toyota RAV4 - 2.0/2.4/2.5L (2005-2011) so I think no problem with parts in Canada if something happen and main battery should last 100000 km but I don't know if is available in Canada or import only and how much it cost; also brakes I mean what is compatibility with other Toyota cars and practically all car parts .Generally I am trying to have knowledge what parts are available to buy in Canada what i will need to import.

    • @gearheadsyndrome
      @gearheadsyndrome  Год назад +2

      The brakes aren't compatible with other Canadian toyotas from what I've been able to find out so far. When I do need brakes I know the fronts can be swapped to highlander discs/pads if you also change the calipers. I'm still trying to confirm the if the same can be done with the rears. If not there is a parts supplier for Estima parts based in the UK that ships to Canada. Pads and rotors for front and back come to about $800CAD total after shipping.
      When it needs any sort of maintenance I'll be sure to film and upload here.
      If you haven't already I'd love if you subscribed and followed along with the Estima and our other projects like Benoit's Supra or my Crown.
      Cheers

      It's really mild hybrid system with only about 20% of overall power from the electric motors. Its really is only good on EV only mode for a couple kms. Its mainly just for regenerative braking and to help the gas engine along when accelerating.

    Now I understand why the van is worth $3-$4000 in Japan. I am looking at one in West coast from a dealership. The good thing is it’s been serviced and checked by experts hence the $2k premium over importing one. My plan is to turn it into a camper van for a trip in May across the USA. Meanwhile I can do Uber Eats to stress test it more while I convert it. 😂
    Can the mid section captain seat be installed reverse so it faces the trunk? I just need one chair so as long as it fits the rails then I’m good.

    • @gearheadsyndrome
      @gearheadsyndrome  Год назад

      I've taken them off, I'm not sure if the lever to slide them on the rails and left and right will work when you reverse them. Might have to get them in the position you want. They should bolt back in though.
      The hybrid is a damn good road trip vehicle with the inverter/outlets and curtains

      @@gearheadsyndrome how much was the Ennocar cells from China in total with shipping to Canada? I owned a 1st gen Alphard Hybrid in Canada but ended up getting this generation Estima with the 2GR and V6 AWD because i was afriad of this battery situation. I understand for the 2nd gen Estima hybrid, they are half LS600H cells (impossible to get used) and half highlander hybrid cells to make a pack. I really do miss the hybrid functionality of the Alphard hybrid and am looking at these again.
