1996: John Major Sheds Some Light on Charles and Diana Divorce

In July 1996, Prime Minister John Major spoke to ITN's Trevor McDonald about the very public divorce of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales. Major was reluctant to say much on the issue beyond the fact that it was "very sad". He did, however, seek to reassure that Diana being stripped of her Royal title did not mean she would not have a role in public life. "The thought that she will not have a role in our future," Major told McDonald, "is profoundly wrong."
