  • The Dotonbori area in Osaka needs no introduction. It’s one of Japan's most famous tourist destinations thanks to its unique and frankly, gaudy neons. Dotonbori is one spot you should not miss when traveling in Japan.
    The history of this area goes back to 1612 when Yasui Doton, a merchant invested all of his money in an ambitious development project. Doton’s plan was to actually divert and expand the Osaka Umezu river into a new waterway system that would link the local canal network with the Kizugawa river. While ambitious, the project was abruptly stopped during the Siege of Osaka (1614 ~ 1615) which also claimed the life of Yasui Doton himself. It is only years later that one of Doton’s cousins decided to complete the whole project in memory of Yasui Doton.
    Now to be honest because of its popularity, the Dotonbori main road has become more and more like a tourist trap. However, if you start wondering around the Dotonbori back alleys you will discover some amazing places that only locals care about as well as stumbling on some small temple festivals as we did.

    Fantastic. I prefer your static compositions over other channels that just walk around. Please more of Tokyo city streets if possible. Hi from Australia :)

      Thanks. Will try to do more of these videos. Now I am not totally against the walking videos, I like the concept but it needs to be extremely stable (no bouncing up and down), avoid pans that are not needed and it is not designed for everything and long stuff.

      @@TokyoStreetView I think the reason why your static shots appeal to me is that the duration gives the viewer time to analyse the detail in each location.

    Time for that obligatory (and sometimes not needed) video game reference comment! Yakuza Kiwami 2 has "Sotenbori" which, after watching this video, is clearly based on Dotonbori. It even has the two bridges over the river. I wanted to go to Osaka when I was in Japan but my tour guides were like, "It's too far away from Tokyo" and we didn't do it. I hope to go next year when I go to Japan again.

    Wow thats the original place from the yakuza franchise. They called this district sotenbori

    • @barticle
      @barticle 6 лет назад +2

      Yup, they always change the names of districts, e.g. Kamurochou/Kabukichou, Soutenbori/Doutonbori, Nagasugai/Nakasu, Tsukimino/Susukino, Kin'eichou/Sakae.

    Starting in the highly commercialised, consumerist neon-paradise, and ending up with the age-old ritual prayer was pretty interesting.

    Random question for either Gonzague or a commenter that knows Japan very well or lives there, I've always been curious about this.
    Is there a city or neighborhood, probably would need to be a bit high up the mountains, that is still relatively close to a big city, that has a more moderate climate and not very humid striking between 5C-28C (41F-82F) all year round?
    I know it's kind of a weird question, reason why I can't find anything only through Google or something. But you know, perhaps one day the place I'd like to live in. xD
    My current city is kinda like that... it's a huge contrast to my hometown that has sweltering summers and bone hurting short winters, very humid. Part of the reason why I moved. :P
    It's been something I've been searching for years now, but it's kinda hard to get an answer when you don't know people who has actually traveled all through Japan.
