Supposed Bible Contradiction #36 - In this one, we examine the claim that the Gospels contradict what Jesus was given on the cross. If you are wondering if an atheist could actually make this argument, yes: www.tiktok.com...

Im honored that Christanity is heavily monitored for allegedly contradictions compared to other religions.
It shows that people try hard to contradict the true religion that is also the most mocked.
The truth gets mocked way more then lies.
@@DB-bq6zc Or it shows that the contradictions are obvious enough that they're plain :)
@@Darksouls184 More likely it shows how superficial the critics reading skills are.
@@davidconklin9552 Not really! Critical scholars' reading is definitely not cursory, and they (including faithful Christians) agree that there are contradictions.
@@Darksouls184 An investigator would prefer to find contradictions in a story, but in the gospels there are no contradictions, because a true contradiction would not be able to agree on anything, In this case, each Gospel agrees on the biography of Jesus precisely, their way of writing is different however, which is good, it's a prove an eyewitnesses actually witnessed the event and told it in different ways, the certainty is even more focused because there is nothing really contradictory in the story, just the way of delivery, and readers who don't want to admit it are reading too much into it, I mean, when you forget that in the same Gospel Jesus is given wine twice and instead just say "this is a contradiction!" when in reality it's not, it's just a different way of telling the story from one eyewitness to another, you are trying to slander the text (Gospel) at this point.
@@Darksouls184many of these “contradictions” disappear with context and further study in the scriptures or were never actually contradictions to begin with
Meanwhile if they all said the same exact thing they would have a problem with that as well
My interaction with atheists changed for the better when I realized that they simply do not want to believe. The whole evidence thing is a red herring.
THANK YOU! I always think about that. Whenever there's eyewitness accounts of anything, there are differing viewpoints, people remember different details, etc. Putting it all together is how you get the best idea of what happened.

same type of "contradiction" where people are mad that all digits of pi aren't in the Bible.
@@tjpg25 Yeah, I have heard that complaint as well. It never claims to be giving PI. It was giving general dimensions. But it still isn't specific enough to count it out. It doesn't say if the measure across isn ID or OD. If ID and the hands breadth is about 4 inches, it is PI.
I have never heard of pi contradiction.
@@faithfulservantofchrist9876 H8theists and Muxlims use it. It attempts to take a general statement and tries to make it claim something it is not. It is a classic Strawman argument.
It is about the basin or "Sea" at the temple used during sacrifices. It was stated to be 30 feet round and 10 feet across. However, the argument ignores the width of the brim. Nevertheless, the passage was not trying to give PI, but a general description.

They're getting exceedingly desperate if this is the "own" they're going with...
Seriously i see foolish arguments., they have become desperate enough to make false contradictions only to not follow Jesus.
I'm recognize myself to be a pretty pedantic fellow, but at least I'm not so far gone as these detractors.
A contradiction would be if one person said he was offered something to drink
and another person said he wasn't offered anything to drink.
Different viewpoints of what exactly he was offered is not a contradiction.
Exactly. These types of "arguments" are so tiresome.
What like mark saying that the women, after seeing the angel at the "empty" tomb told no one and the others books saying they told various people?
@@marktrosien3005 No because Mark also says along with the other books that they told the disciples.
In Mark 16:8 It's just saying they were afraid and told no one until they got to the disciples.
@@KnightRadar Guess you and I have different definitions for nothing and anyone.
@@marktrosien3005 Seriously? It's not saying they told no one, ever! All the books including Mark clearly say they told the disciples first.
so, 16:8 isn't a forever statement. They told no one until they got to the disciples.
Talk about nitpicking.
Do you have any real contradictions?
Skeptics Online? As Jesus said, "Even if the saw a man come back from the dead they would not believe." These are not merely skeptics, they are people who don't WANT to believe. So be it. No one is forced into the kingdom.
Amen.
It's either a hallucination, aliens, or AI.
@OrangeMonke14 neo atheists trying to be smart:
100% correct
"Even if" means the event did not happen at all. When Jesus said that he will return in *his life time* and everyone rose from the dead. But over 2000 years later, no one bothered to question and the worst part, the kingdom of heaven is supposed to appear on earth when the end time comes.
Well done Jones, God bless
Really scrapping at the bottom of the barrel if folks think this is a contradiction that will disrupt scholars
Myrrh just means bitter. For example if I say ”I bought a Christmas tree bulb” but the bulb is shaped like a candy cane, does that mean that it isn’t a bulb? No.
No contradiction here. Skeptics are truly getting desperate.
We should simply call them denialists, because that's what we are talking about.
I agree. Hell, even I don't believe these skeptics are actually smart!
@@droe2570 , good point.
@@dariusga6752 , strangely, skeptics may be quite clever in their own fields of expertise. Yet they think that any fool with a keyboard and a 5th grade education is qualified to challenge the Bible.
It never ceases to amaze me how the Bible makes scoffers dunces. All of a sudden all common sense must be thrown out of the window.
I find a similar phenomenon at work in a number of other so-called "contradictions." Both Acts and one of the writings of Paul describe Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus. One says that Paul's companions heard the voice but didn't understand it; the other says they didn't hear the voice. That's because one account was written in Greek, the other in Aramaic. In one language, "hear" means "to hear and understand;" in the other, it means only "to hear." Thus, in both accounts, the companions didn't both hear and understand.
Excellent.

"myrrh, (from Arabic murr, “bitter”), bitter-tasting, agreeably aromatic, yellow to reddish brown oleoresinous gum" Brittanica.
Mark was written first, so when Mark says Myrrh it is probable that Mathew simply referred to Myrrh as Gall, but Mark which was written around 40 AD was more specific with the substance, because he remembered it better. Mathew not remembering what specific substance it was, might simply say "Gall" because he didn't remember it because he written in around 50 AD - according to tradition, Mathew was written 10 years after Mark.
When we don't remember things, we tend to generalize - using more general terms.
Like if someone was killed with a short sword or a sabre, but we don't remember what kind of sword it was, we can instead say it was a sword. Both sabre and short sword are a type of sword, but we might not remember...
According to tradition, Matthew was written prior to Mark. Papias, Clement of Alexandria, and Irenaeus of Lyons all state this, and later Augustine of Hippo also proposed Matthaean priority. Suggesting that Matthew's Gospel was originally written in Hebrew, with some early writers, such as Jerome even claiming to see the Aramaic writings of Matthew. All of them also suggest that Mark was written later than Matthew.
It's only really later in the 17th and later 19th century does hypothesis of Marcan priority start prominence, but personally I don't really find those arguments to be to strong to hold weight.
@@Cklert Markan priority did not spring out of nowhere: scholars still think it's the most likely thing for a reason. And I don't see a good reason to think Papias knew what he was talking about there, AFAIK. Papias thought the gospel of Matthew was also written in Hebrew, but if it was, we don't really have much extant evidence of it: its language is greek (which would not put it beyond translation), but its composition also more follows Greek structure.
Also, Jerome's claim to have seen the Aramaic writings of Matthew is one that we should regard with skepticism; he claims that certain phrases occur in it that don't really work in Aramaic (like ones that rely on Greek wordplay).

2:48 that Roman soldier actor has a big tongue piercing 😂😂😂
Here's another detail: The soldiers gave Jesus a drink called "posca" which was a cheap drink made from sour wine or vinegar mixed with water. Sometimes posca was mixed with herbs, or sometimes they would add an egg. The Roman soldiers drank it like lemonade. This was the "wine" or "vinegar" which the Roman soldier shoved into Jesus' face.
btw, the Romans did not use sponges for drinking; they used sponges the way we use toilet paper. Romans used a xylospongium, also called a tersorium, which was a sponge on a stick used for cleaning yourself after excreting. When that Roman soldier soaked a sponge with posca and shoved it in Jesus' face, it was not an act of kindness on his part; It was a mean spirited insult, an evil joke played on a dying man by a crude and vulgar thug.
Skeptics are running out at arguments at this point🤣
Skeptics are probably just more tired of Christians stretching the text to avoid contradictions that are likely!
You can harmonize almost anything if you put your mind to it, but it doesn't make any of the harmonizations likely.
@@Darksouls184any piece of text has a finite number of plausible readings. You never need to reach for an implausible reading in harmonizing the gospels, this shows they cohere. You do need to sometimes resolve to some reading that is a priori implausible for some passages about the finer theological points (For example, "the Father is greater than I")
@@dr.tafazzi I definitely don't think that's true. Even in other threads in this video, the rationalities for reconciling the contradicting genealogies in Matthew and Luke are way beyond plausibility (there's not a good reason to believe it was Mary's genealogy in one gospel, and other things like multiple Levirate marriages to reconcile other differences in the genealogy are incredibly unlikely). Similarly, "take your staff" vs. "don't take your staff" requires reading more into the text than it says. The harmonizations in general are also motivated by viewing the Bible as univocal, but if you don't hold that assumption, the contradictions become even more likely than the alternatives.
This just proves Jesus saying that if you don’t believe in Moses and the prophets, you will never believe in him despite everything he shows you.
@Darksouls184 Nope, not at all. If you knew how genealogies worked in that cultural context, that's clearly not beyond plausibility. For example, every reader was expectind genealogies to skip generarions, and so in that way each person has 2 grandfathers they can be said to descend from, giving many options on how to reconstruct a genealogy.
The more that you attack something, the more likely you're afraid of it.
The more that you attack something, the more likely it is true.

Great explanation brother! Jesus is God!☦
When we sin it disappoints God, when are cruel to each other this hurts God. What Jesus endured on the cross represents the gravity of sin
Well done, God bless
I heard from lot of preachers and red in books written by Christian authors that wine with myrrh was not mockery but halp as anastetic pain killer. That romans aloud Hebrew woman to make and distribute such a helpful medicine to Jews sentenced to death
Just a little addition. Roman soldiers would often drink sour wine (vinegar) mixed with water as a form of ancient gatorade. Whether this same stuff they gave Jesus on the sponge is up for debate. The stuff was called Posca and was known for having a tart, briny taste.
The more you know. 💫
Great case showing how these things make the crucifixion more reliable! Also, realizing they probably mocked Jesus å lot with wine hits deeper, knowing wine is used symbolically for God's wrath several places in the Bible!
I had hoped it was not the same sponge used for their restroom habits, which is also what it sounds like but I hope that was not the case.
A small request, brother.
I am a Tamilian, and in my native place, many people do not know English. As a result, they miss out on the valuable content available on your channel. I kindly request your permission to upload your videos in our own language to help reach more people in our community.
People who believe these passages are "contradictions" need to go back to school and learn the English language before they start addressing the Bible.
2:13 Considering where Calvarivm was placed as a hill and contrasting it with the normal and usual roadside Crucifixion (Being that the whole point was being seen from everywhere) , it makes sense that His Cross was taller than usual for it to be seen .This and Christ carrying the whole Cross and not just the Patibvlvm are things I will fight anyone and everyone on .
How do you know He was carrying the whole cross?
Funny how someone reads nothing and comments like he knows it all 😭@@dr.tafazzi
@@dr.tafazzi bc Jewish law wouldn’t have allowed the typical upright cross post to stay on a public highway (it would have been covered with blood and filth from previous crucifixion victims).
There’s also no indication that crosses weighed exactly 300 pounds or something, and a full cross could have been easily dragged along the street by Jesus (like in the Passion of The Christ movie).
That's a pretty dumb thing to get into an argument over
@@aericabison23 which jewish law? In the Pentateuch, only touching blood makes you impure, passing by a blood soaked pole isn't forbidden.
I don't understand your second point, where do you get the 150kg figure from?
Lastly, the sign that Pilate wanted fixed on the cross is quite unlikely to have been carried around by Jesus, because the romans knew well that people fall over when carrying the cross, which may very well end up breaking the sign. Fixing it on thd cross with Jesus already nailed on it is also quite cumbersome and therefore quite unlikely.
I guess it's worth noting that Jesus might have had this future incident in mind when he told the disciples at the last supper that he wouldn't partake of the fruit of the vine until his return.
oh wow, good point
Hyssop is an herb used in cleansing rituals. Even in the Old Testament “cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean.” It’s symbolic imagery used by the authors of those particular books. Other authors came up with slightly different stories.
At the first Passover, the night the Passover lamb was sacrificed, the Hebrews were told to paint the doorposts (vertical beams) and lintels (horizontal beams) of their houses with the blood of the lamb using hyssop as a brush. The detail of raising the wine (connected with Jesus's blood just a little bit before in the text) to the horizontal and vertical beams using hyssop was a clear signal to first century Jews that Jesus was the new lamb of the new Passover sacrifice.
Excellent work IP
Just a thought... Roman soldiers had a drink called "posca" which is a sour tasting wine that is rich with electrolytes.
I wonder if, possibly, the soldier could have felt bad for Him and offered him some of their drink? While we have evidence of them mocking Him earlier, no mention of them mocking Him in the moment of the wine is mentioned, and later one of them even seems to respect Jesus.
So... I wonder... Could it have been a soldier sharing a bit of his own ration with a man who's suffering? It certainly could also have been simple mockery, but I wanted to share this hypothesis.
Interesting hypothesis and it would be interesting if the one that shared the posca was the same one that said Jesus truly is the Son of God.
In the words of the apostate prophet “ _IP? ME TOO!!!_ “
I was under the impression it was probably posca, which was basically vinegar with some seasoning and was popular amongst Roman soldiers for quenching thirst.
I like that skeptics say that the Gospel writers used others Gospels yet dont realize these so called contradictions
Good point
J. Carl Laney softens and censors the fact that the sponge carried by the Roman soldiers was not for wine, but it was portable toilet paper, which makes the soldiers' act on the cross even more cruel and more disrespectful to the convicted.
Whatever, He went through an agonising death for our sakes. That should never be forgotten, especially in our darkest hours.
Just one thing to remember. While there might be ways to read these texts as not contradicting each other, that doesn't mean that they don't actually contradict each other. The potential still exists for these stories to be contradictory in nature, potentially even explicit contradictions intended by the authors.
Matthew gets this correct. The hyssop branch is the fourth cup of Passover. It is finished (Passover) when the fourth cup is drank, there is a new Sacrificial Lamb. The old covenant is replaced with the blood of Christ.
I've also heard some people say that the sponge with the sour wine was a roman toilet sponge and it was used to further mock him by giving him a dirty sponge to drink from. I personally think he was connecting the roman bath house with the roman legion to much since it was clearly stated the sponge had to be fitted to the stick which wouldn't be the case if it was a used sponge. furthermore the jar of soar wine (like roman posca) was merely called a vessel which could be a jar or bucket, but I think the romans would have made sure they were completely separate containers to insure the whole squad wasn't poisoned.
What are your thoughts?
Another trivia. A sour wine typically would have been a vinegar. A sponge on a stick is used in acient roman times as a cleaning tool in communal toiletries. These sponge with sticks are used and cleaned with a vinegar. Total mockery
It don't seem a Contradiction to me🤨🧐
Why Skeptics love to fabricate Contradictions without Context?
I keep telling people that a lot of these so called contradictions can be explained easily and some of them are of little to no concequence to the key or fundamental teachings of Christianity.
Good video 😊
The comment section is full of apologists whom act like they lived during jesus time 😂😂😂 bunch of posers.
If the sponge was pressed against JESUS' lips, without even noticing it at first, HE would suddenly taste a little tricking into his lips and as soon as HE noticed, HE may have constantly avoided it after that.
He’s so smart he doesn’t need to be filled with Joy because he’s intellectualized his way to salvation
Most likely it could have been Bossca. The Roman legionaries would drink this. It was actually a soured wine or vinegar which is mixed with water and sometimes other spices and fruits. And it may not have been made as a mockery.
Seems weird if they used all those different types of wine, not sure why they would. Also I feel like the gall vs myrrh wasn't addressed well because gall is a thing, it doesn't just mean bitter tasting substance, so it wouldn't make sense to relate to the myrrh.
whats funny is these are the dthin gs that dont matter at all

Guys i need help about the violence and stuff in the old testament. And Im not talking about certain descriptions. Im taking about things that alex o connor brings up. IP needs to talk to him about this subject
there are a lot of good takes on the topic. William Lane Craig has some great takes on the issue and he talked with Alex about it. Ancient Middle East was a messed up place. Every single instance of violence in the Old Testament isn’t prescribed by God. You had to be tough and violent in order to survive in a place like that. God merely used what people knew at the time to gradually bring them to understand that certain things were actually wrong.
This man called Jesus Christ was absolutely God incarnate..!
The details of recording of the death of Christ are like no other in ancient history..!
So according to Mark, Luke, and John...how many people were resurrected? How many does Matthew say?
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
A sponge on as stick was the roman equivalent of toilet paper.
That was for prisoners but it was also used for this but it's very likely given the history of the Romans it could be used as a 2 in 1
It’s like these people don’t know anything about chemistry
is this another one of those time where Hollywood screwed up reality ?
how tall would the crosses have been ?
cause you can look at pictures of hyssop, it looks like lavender ... and i cant imagine a big ol weighted sponge on a bendy lavender branch.
i could definitely see some drunk roman doing that to mock someone though, a sponge on a bendy vine "here have a drink buddy"
Crucifixion contradiction make them boys go loco
I owe a debt of thanks to Christian apologists for deconverting me from the Christian religion.
I wonder how often people who look for contradictions look to the original language it was written in? English is one of the most annoyingly complex languages ever invented, being made up of, like, a dozen other languages, that are still used today. There are scores of English bible translations, none of which can agree on half the words being translated. How easy would it be to go looiking for just the right translation to find a contradictory word to clash with another word in another translation?
Matthews account says vinegar mingled with galll
Marks account says wine mingled with myrrh
Lukes account says vinegar
Johns account says a sponge with vinegar and put it upon hyssop
Hey IP, idk if there is a better place to ask this but I’ve seen a rise in people who reject Paul because “he didn’t meet Christ” and that he wasn’t Jesus/part of the original disciples” do you think this is worth a video and have you seen anything similar?
Why don't these skeptics ever put their time and efforts into debunking Islam?
I think we both know the answer. I could say truth and honestly that might be it. However population and social influence comes into play.
So proud of seeing the comment section.....bible has the power to explain itself and no one else can debunk it
Yes I.can, very easily. The Bible says it is the perfect word of God and the truth. Google Scientific Inaccuracies In the Bible. Boom. Bible defeated. Obviously barbaric, ignorant man wrote this book claiming to be god and speak for God. Now I'll expose Jesus as a fraud. Matthew 24 up to verse 34 has him.telling his disciples about the end times and that all these events would happen before the passing of their generation. Well it didn't happen and there's other prophecies of his that didn't pass either, because he's a false prophet and a liar, just like his father. His story itself has horrible evidence to even prove he existed. Nobody wrote about him until like 100 years after he died and it's all hearsay, which means it's made up because you can't trust people to carry these stories for 100 years. You can't Eben trust people today to figure out what's true or tell you the truth of what happened last week! It's absurd to believe anything about Jesus is accurate when the only writings are from anonymous people that weren't there and obviously made up their own account of what happened. Christianity is a hard fail for anything truthful. It's just a cult designed to get people to surrender their logic and reason to believe utter nonsense with not only no evidence, but evidence against their position. We know the Earth isn't flat and there's no firmament.

It is not the cult definition you speak of, and if it was really made by "barbaric... men" then why does it go against all earthly desires? Riddle me this reddit atheist.
If only Islam was criticized and dissected for contradictions a fraction as much as Christianity is. The fact that we have these “contradictions” (that easily prove not to be contradictory at all) still present in the text shows that the apostles and gospel writers were telling the truth and had nothing to hide. It’s culturally inconvenient that the first witnesses of Jesus resurrected were women, yet they stuck to that story, because truth is important. It would have been “easy” (not actually that easy considering how many early copies there were but ya know) for the early church to make these accounts of the sour wine line up better at face value, but they didn’t need to because each account is still telling the truth. Contrast that with a certain caliph who systematically destroyed every contradicting scrap of the Quran other than his singular version for the sake of unity of the Muslim world. (Btw also killing Mohammed’s direct followers who disagreed with the compilation of verses)
They got their reward😐
The Lord feeds the birds, ye did not put away yer countless idols, tribulation is close, The Lord does not delay his coming so put yer treasures in heaven, or be marked😐 much more woe to those who fall in tribulation soon😐 amen.
Even if they are speaking of distinctly differnt things its absurd to reject the Gospels on the basis that the accounts struggle to accurately recall some unpleasant substance the soldiers offered Jesus in mockery. I think its fair to say they were focused on other more substantial things, like Christ being on a cross.
Even with a mundane event like going to a restaurant, If I can't accurately recall what my friend had to eat, saying he had a lamb chop when he had rack of lamb, that doesn't mean we didn't go to the restaurant, and he didn't eat.
The Gospels serve as witness testimonies, and if four witnesses said this in court, no judge would reject their accounts on this supposed "contradiction."
These are clearly different versions of the same story (not surprising since 3 of the gospels written 30 years after the event, shared the same source..) The bigger question is "did it ever happen?" and for this there is no demonstrable and reliable evidence.
Please do a better video on the apparent contradiction between the genealogies, because there indeed is a greek word for son in law (gambros)
But is that word ever used in the New Testament?
@nothingnothing7958 no idea sadly, which makes the situation weirder
@@Abcdefg_h62dzz I couldn't find any use of it in the New Testament but I found the use of daughter in law and mother in law. So we can still say Luke meant son in law.
One can simply accept that the genealogies contradict, and that it doesn't provide a referendum on whether one's faith in the Bible is justified or not.
That's probably easier.
@@Darksouls184 one can simply do the research and see that Luke only used men so if its Mary's genealogy he is forced to use Joseph.

The story will be very similar, but because of perspective and our own individual minds they will not be the same.

Seems weird if they used all those different types of wine, not sure why they would.
That is because of Passover where four various cups of wine are used in traditional feast. A pure white lamb is used as a sacrifice. When Christ drinks the fourth cup from the hyssop as in the Jewish tradition passover is finished. But now Christ is the new Sacrificial Lamb. 🙏
@GirloftheValley- So they would waste their 4 different types of wine on the sacrifice? Still seems odd. I don't know what the pure white lwmb has to do with anything but he was not used as a sacrifice because here Jesus was, like you saud he is the new sacrificial lamb. Also why is it that passover is finished when he drinks the 4th cup from the hyssop as in the Jewish tradition passover is over if we still celebrate it?
You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel. LOL!
So, are there any contradictions or are they all reconcilable like this?
Zero contradictions
"like this" no, others are reconcilable in different ways but I would apply a list of standards to check a "contradiction" with, and maybe a few more not coming to the top of my head:
1. Looking around the context of the verse (see if verses around the verse in question help explain it)
2. Look into the original Greek or Hebrew, and even different manuscripts.
3. Determine whether or not this is symbolical, literal, or theological
4. Determine whether or not the text is referencing beliefs or reality during the time
5. Look into the historical context of the verse to gather extra information
6. Look into explanations from... Bagels, but don't always take their word for it on this.
7. Look into practices during this time such as counting methods, ways of speaking, culture, etc.
None of the four writers were at the crucifixion except for three Maris and a kid, wich may be their source of info.
John was
Jesus Christ is King ofKings ! Believe in him and you have Eternal life
It seems strange that the all powerful creator of the universe was incapable of communicating with his creation in a way that did not generate so much controversy.
Almost like the Bible is stories written by men who were very ignorant of reality.
If I were to worship a god, he would have to do a better job than the Christian god.
I will never understand why Christians are so easy to settle for such a lame god.
Matthew and Luke were almost certainly copying Mark, and Mark and John also seem to share a source. Easy.
I just wanted to ask because I've been asking this for a while now did Zoroastrianism really influence Judaism I might start doing my own research about it but I just wanted to ask
In my humble opinion, unless there a contradiction on something important; like whether jesus is or isnt God, then i dont particularly care
vinegar
In French, sour wine is "vin aigre" (vinaigre, aka vinegar)
there are actually some translations that use vinegar as the additive rather than myrrh or gull
I thought I remembered it that way.
If this argument is offered I would say i am very skeptical of your skepticism
Such earthly wisdom and fleshly knowledge. You strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. The answer is found in the old testament prophecies.

The same way they think that the universe started on it's own.

The people leveling the myrrh/gall argument just don't sound very bright.
As if people in the past only used one word to describe a thing.
That isn’t a contradiction. You should talk about important things like what Jesus says in the Bible like, helping people out, being a good person, do unto others as you want done to you. Or things like, do you know how to make holy water? Ya boil the hell out of it! 😂😂 ✌🏼
This is literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Who cares what whine Jesus was offered on the cross." Oh no some one showed that the accounts of the whine were slightly different my faith is over 😭" give me a break these sceptics are a joke.😂
Somehow, I think this is missing the point. Rather that try to explain away the differences among the accounts of four different writers in the gospels (after all Matthew and John were primary witnesses of the story, while Mark and Luke were secondary sources), lets consider the deeper meaning.
HYSSOP (Exodus 12:22-23): "And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you."
Hyssop was also used to sprinkle blood as part of the Jewish Passover. Also used for its cleansing effect in connection with plague, leprosy and chest ailments and symbolically in cleansing the soul. Hyssop was a means of transferring the blood of the sacrifice to the sinner. (Psalms 51:7): "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."
The hyssop branch shows up in the New Testament as well. Consider the following two references together:
… in the Garden of Gethsemane…
(Matthew 26:42): "He … prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done."
… and at the crucifixion of Jesus.
(John 19:28-30): "After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost."
Now, combine the Matthew and John references with Psalms 75:8): "For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them."
The symbolism here is rich. The cup of sour wine Jesus drinks at the crucifixion is representing the cup of God’s wrath which we all deserve to drink because of our sins. The cup could be taken away from Jesus even if he didn’t drink it. But the cup of God’s wrath could not be taken away from us unless Jesus drank it on our behalf.
This wine representing God’s wrath was transferred to Jesus on the hyssop branch. The hyssop plant and the wine vinegar are symbolizing the substitutionary death of Jesus on our behalf. Jesus died in our place. Jesus drank the cup of God’s wrath that we were supposed to drink (Psalms 75:8, above).
It is like God was saying to everyone, “It wasn’t the blood of the lamb spread on your door frame with the hyssop that allowed the destroyer to pass over you when you were leaving Egypt. It wasn’t the blood of animals that Moses sprinkled on you with the hyssop that appeased my wrath. It was my Son’s blood. I did that. I led you out of Egypt. I paid the price for your rebellion. Look at the hyssop and remember my Son. Look at this Old Testament symbol and now look at the one it was symbolizing.”
This is an easy one. Next time try another more difficult one please
