  • on June 17-18, 2022, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad put the PRR T1 3 Chime Whistle on their articulated locomotive #1309. Enjoy the Mellow tones of this original PRR T1 whistle on one of the largest operating steam locomotives in the world. It is probably the largest steam locomotive used in regular passenger service. It runs every Friday-Sunday May thru October. You can get tickets to ride at www.wmsr.com
    This Whistle will someday be the voice of PRR T1 #5550. www.t1trust.com
    The engineer on the #1309 is PRR T1 Trust General Manager, Jason Johnson. Firing this day is Mitchell Johnson.

    My Grandfather worked for Baldwin from the 1920's till retirement in the 50's he was a shop foreman and I had found a photo online of a New T-1 with him and a couple of other Baldwin employees standing in front of it. Unfortunately, the man who had the photo online died and I can no longer find the photo to print it. However, Like the Big Boy I hope to someday get to see #5550 pulling a full consist of PRR Heavyweight Pullmans. A dream perhaps but they said they would never restore and operate the Big Boy. I got to climb on that exact Locomotive in 1970 when my Grandparents took me and my middle brother to California for vacation. I hear that whistle blowing!

      The speed capabilities honestly warrants a more than a whistle, gorgeous as this one is. Wouldn't be too inauthentic for 5550 to have a horn as well; S1 6100 had one of course, and an early Trains article cites T1 6111 having an air horn as well. Besides, for an engine meant to do west of Harrisburg what the GG1's did east of there, a Leslie seems like a no-brainer

    • @wordenentertainment1997
      @wordenentertainment1997 Год назад +2

      At the FRA test facility in Pueblo, Colorado. Personally I am super excited once we see what 5550 will do. So many myths and rumors that remained unproven until 5550's time to shine. Plus I am all for 5550 to break the world speed record for a steam locomotive. Nothing against Mallard as it is a very significant steam locomotive, but I feel she doesn't deserve the title since it was going downhill when it did the record and had a mechanical issue soon after. The PRR T1 on the other hand is a true steam speed demon considering PRR and Baldwin had speed in mind when it came to the design. Not to mention the large boiler, smokebox, the duplex drivers and streamlining are key components for a steam locomotive like the T1's achieve such high speed. If 5550 becomes a success, it could potentially open new doors for future builds of extinct American steam locomotives in the US, as the A1 Trust's Tornado locomotive has spawned other builds of extinct locomotives in England.
