  • From 1914's grim reality to today's virtual reality, this mini documentary looks at how health care played a key role in the 1914-18 war. It hears how most soldiers actually survived the trenches, but were at great threat from infection and disease. Today's combat treatment can often be traced back to improvements made in the Great War. But does this mean that war is good for medicine?

One of my surgery professors, Dr. Francis Moore, was the chief surgical resident at the Mass General Hosp. the night of the Coconut Grove fire (that was the Boston fire mentioned). He had just read about a new formula for giving fluids to burn patients and used that instead of the standard of the time. That saved many lives that night. During WW2 in the US civilian hospitals you had to contact the Pharmaceutical company (Merck) with the patient history and they would determine how much penicillin to provide. You had to collect the patients urine and send that back to Merck where the penicillin excreted was extracted to be reused. That is how bad the shortage was.

Plastic surgery developed by leaps and bounds as a result of the horriffic wounds received by soldiers. Prostheticians worked hand in hand with doctors who developed the pedicle graft by which the patients own living tissue could be grafted to various locations without the fear of rejection.Amazing advances in the field of plastic surgery.
