Extremely helpful well made video, wish there were more like this. Sparkplug change and a hot start videos would be helpful as the ones available aren't as detailed as yours. Many thanks
Thanks for the video! I've had this problem for years where not all the coolant would drain, I learned today it was because of a faulty thermostat. Not sure how the bike has continued to run this long without further problems but needless to say the thermostat is being replaced!
Thanks for posting this video! It helped me drain my radiator so that I can take it off and figure out how to fix this damn leak! Also, you always have great music playing in the background. I appreciate your video series on all these maintenance and repair tips!
Great video. I just bought a 2012 G650GS Sertao a few months ago, and I needed to change the coolant and maintain the thermostate. I forund Your video. Couldn´t have done it with out. Thanks for sharing your skills, it was really helpful! Martin Denmark
Good vid thank u. Just thought I’d post to help someone else out I was having trouble getting the clip for the thermostat back in. It would get caught and not slide through easily. turns out I didn’t have the thermostat pushed up far enough into the radiator when reinstalling it. Hope this helps someone out. Just push it up ever so slightly more and hold it there and the clip should go thru smoothly.
Nice...At 7:17 I broke the surround for the clip.accidentally, while trying to pry it open....both sides actually, much to my horror....still no movement I had to rev the bike to build up pressure ,and it unexpectedly exploded open..My face was two inches away at the time.>Scalding Coolant all over my face,at least none in my eyes......I didn't make a video.XD Long story short,My thermostat was broken, the spring had smashed loose of the plastic casing....So will be replacing that soon, but now need to make some kind of assembly to keep the Thermostat cover in the radiator housing,as the part the holding clip would have depended on is no more..... Can't say I'm a fan of the build quality of this bike......another example,The water pump assembly is designed to fail. Other than that,I like the ride, though it be a little under powered at times...
Wound up buying a new thermostat and radiator...had a professional fit it...so much for saving money..it was working for a couple months after that...now need to change the coolant again...won't go near the thermostat this time... The radiator cap is giving me problems. weak hands...I know how to remove it,ie push down and turn and then repeat to clear the plastic nubs...I have managed it before on the old rad.....but on this one....the thing just won't come loose...so emptying and refilling is impossible.... Any tips on safely removing the rad cap? On my last radiator,I learned that my friend ,when faced with a similar problem, had used a pliers..but I don't want to damage the cap.......I know about the pressure valve in them, and how delicate they are.
Kirk, thank you so much for this video! I just bought a 2002 BMW F650GS with 12k miles, should I go ahead and replace the thermostat even though the miles are not much but the bike is 20 years old?
Ugh. The one part I need help on is glossed over. I took out the clip but I can't get the thermostat free. Every time I start putting a screw driver in it starts sounding expensive.
I offer my approach to the clip re-install...try it without the thermostat housing. It seems there are a couple of approaches..from the front and the back of the unit. For removal Tugging downward with only a slight rocking motion did it. Remember caution with the little tab that is on the rearward side of the "Unit". PS I already hate this clip and the installation.
Best video on the internet on the subject.>Thank you.Subscribed liked Bell etc....I'm off to do mine now.....I'm guessing my thermostat is caulked up with lime.>Only one way to be sure..
Nice video.Thx ... you mention that the fan goes on frequently, which it does. But the overtemp light also comes on on my bike after ~15 minutes of driving, even in very cold weather. Is this a common problem on a 1999 F650GS? New sensor? New thermostat perhaps? Thanks for any input...
***** Maybe this is obvious, but does it have enough coolant running through the system? The radiators on the F650 GS are apparently notorious for leaking if whoever owned it before didn't get it replaced under warranty. I guess they had a bad vender for the radiators for some time. I'm currently fixing my leaky radiator on my 01 F650 GS.
My gs650 is sometimes after riding some kms and when I put in the side resting position draining some coolant out. I have been told that this is normal, would that be normal? thks
i have a g650 and would like to know what coolant should i use. I have a concentrate and would like to know how to what mix of water to coolant to uses.
@@kirksmotorrad Thanks so much for getting back so quick! I was being a door and looking for the coolant window on the wrong side of the bike! Thanks again and great video!
I know this was two months ago, but for anyone else- you just need to take off the seat, then undo the screws on the top panel and then the side panel you're removing. There should be 6 easy to see ones and then 2-4 more down by the seat
Hola tengo BMW GS 650 Quisiera saber si es normal que en el ojo de buey el nivel del aceite no se mantenga estable sube y baja ojalá alguien me lo pueda aclarar agradecido

Question - does it get heat up quickly? I just bought 2013 and drove 2 miles, the fan came on and I can feel the heat on my left leg and the radiator pipe was pretty hot
common complaint among riders of this bike. I have one 2013 myself and can tell you "you will feel that heat when the fan comes on" but as long as you are riding the wind can compensate for that. If you are riding in the city, at slow speeds or in a traffic jam, you are out of luck.
The BMW 650 CS is a "girls" bike according to a young German lady I met ! It come in two seat height... Luckily I've got the lower one; I'm only 5'7" going down... It's also an excellent city bike :)
Well. Nice video. I changed yesterday the coolant of my bike. I had never changed it since I bought. At the point of removing the thermostat as showed in the video, me and my friend after removing the clip we were trying to pry it open. But as it was not coming off ( afraid of breaking it) we decided to leave it alone and installing back the clip. It took us almost one hour to realize that the thermostat (the bottom) was half a millimeter out and not lined up with the body. Uh. Finally with pliers I squeezed the thermostat against the body and the clip was back in. We should have removed it and after cleaning should have applied silicon paste that you did.

MotoCamp Adventure did you first had a leak in the radiator where the fluid was running out? A little late, but i have this problem right now myself.
Was it the radiator.. Or the little bleed hole under the water pump??

The music is really doing it. Especially the tutorial in itself, good work. What do you use to clean the thermostat and holder? W
Just wipe it with a towel
Great Vid, I just purchased a toque wrench but it doesn't have Newton Meters, it just has Kg cm on one side and IN LB on the other.
1 Kg = 10 Nm
100 cm = 1 meter

Helpful video! But attempting to pry the thermostat out broke mine…

Thanks Sir .Israel here . Is it really important to have Bleu Liquid or is the pink ok as well ?
Great helpful video! I'm not a fan of liquid cooled bikes but What can we do? They'll all be electric in a few years. I'm cringing already!
