Is a dig to villians doing something stupid and letting the hero get away. But in the anime is even more ridiculous. Jotaro has to stop his heart with his stand, and Dio has a monologue in his head about how he is gonna enjoy Jotaro’s death. And at the last minute, he goes “nah, it doesn’t hurt to cut off his head”. He truly is petty
Dio doesn't need a reason to do anything, he just does it because he can 😂
I mean he initially resented becuase he saw Jonathan as a spoiled rich brat who got everything Dio, the egomaniac, felt he himself deserved. Things escalate from there and eventually when he has nothing to lose he gives up his hummanity both figuratively and literally when becoming a vampire. This takes his evil to a whole other level as he sees himself as a being above all of hummanity.

In all seriousness DIO's attitude comes from severe mommy issues, having been robbed of the safety of relying on a loving mother, having Dario Brando to blame for her tortuous life and eventual death
DIO always feels at war with the world, a world that will always try to remind him of his weakness if he ever shows any sort of forgiveness or weakness, like his mother did, DIO is in a constant pursuit for power, and to feel himself controlling everyone he wishes, he can only feel at peace when he can be sure he's way on top of everyone, which just means he's always going to be mean, and always looking for more and more until he's a literal god

I say Dio is his father because technically it was Dio's personality.

Dio loved his mom, and knew the dad was HORRIBLE. but the dumb mom thought the dad had hope in him. Then later on she passed away from overworking.

I hated my Calculus II teacher because he was a jerk, but I respected him for his knowledge of the subject. Jonathan didn't need to be liked by Dio to gain his respect. Also, the story you're referring to is from Over Heaven, a transcript of Dio's diary, which Hirohiko Araki didn't write. He's also never definitively said whether it was canon or not, you just assume it is.

JoJo can be summed up in one sentence. The creator's (Araki) exploration of sex and violence over the course of 40 years.
Dio is a living Player Hater's Ball with his own Player Haters Ball. Also Dio doesn't love anyone or anything besides himself. And he most likely doesn't care about wether you're a male or female, if he wants to smash you he's going to smash you, but he won't love you because he doesn't love anything besides himself.
Fun fact; Dio actually loves two people, besides himself. Jonathan and Pucci.
These two characters are the only times Dio showed true emotion towards, with Dio crying while Jonathan dies (partially because he too is about to die for good and partially because Jonathan genuinely cared for Dio, despite his flaws) and his philosophical moments with Pucci.
They also theorize that if Dio knew how badly Giorno's mum was treating him, Dio would've killed her and Giorno would've turned out VERY different.

He had a perfect body, he was smarter and stronger than Dio and he was a good person, and we already know that Dio is canonically Bi. Maybe he loved Jonathan as more than family?
