Could Betelgeuse DESTROY Earth?

- If Betelgeuse were to explode, creating a supernova, would it destroy Earth?
Betelgeuse is the second brightest star in the constellation Orion and it sparked excitement around the world when it began dimming noticeably in 2019.
The strange dimming caused some to believe the big event was close at hand. By February 2020, the star had lost more than two-thirds of its brightness and the change was visible even to the unaided eye.
Astrophysicists say we'd have to be within 50 light-years of a supernova for it to harm us, and Betelgeuse is over 500 light-years away.
And the strange dimming was caused by a cloud of hot gas, released by the star, that temporarily blocked some of the star’s light. - Наука

Blows my mind that it dimmed, but it actually would have happened 560ish years ago. Will the new space telescope be able to see it in present time? If not how close to present time can it see? Not sure if that even works that way, good video idea though.
Goofy ahh Aleins
Isn't that 500 light years in the past? That means even if it had gone supernova, the earth is still here. So what is the point of this question anyways.
Glad im safe from Beetlejuice 😂

Only if we say it three times. 😋

Damnt! I made the comment on the same joke, I had to delete it once I read yours.
He actually said it exactly 3 Times 😂☹
"my brain trembles"
The fact a supernova can do significant damage to life even 50 light years away is amazing in itself.
Humans show their might and the universe laughs in their faces
It is incredible stuff for sure! Make sure you have even a simple telescope if we ever do have a supernova visible in the night sky. The power involved, the scale of how big it is, it's hard to wrap your head around it
Depends on the size of a supernova. The safe distance is around 10 light years between us and average ones.
Yup gamma rays are a real son of a B
@@timidjawa6324this Is false, for a supernova to cause even extremely minor damage to us it only needs to be 300 light years away
One of my dreams is we see Betelgeuse Nova in our lifetimes.
That means it exploded 500 years ago.
An amazing thing it would be - a second moon at night, visible during the day.
@@1878religion One light year is the amount of km light travels in a year. If something is 500 light years away from Earth, then it takes 500 years to reach that point, or to that point reach the Earth. So if we saw Betelgeuse go supernova right now, it would’ve actually exploded 500 years ago. So Trumpington Fanhurst is correct.
@@1878religion Yoh just contradicted yourself. Yes years are time and light years are distance, but you’re the one who seems to have gotten that wrong in the first place.
@@1878religion Everyone else here seems to already know that, you’re the only one who tried to equate the two.

@@mrwaverider5537 Yeah sure, you can see all the images on the Nasa's website gallery.
It's for closer objects. NASA will be second to post anything

Damn Beetlejuice tryna kill shit in movies and in real life 🤣🤣

Plot twist, Betelgeuse went supernova 500 years ago, the light just hasn't reached us yet
It actually did, we just won't know 'till the year 2522 or 5690.
We don’t know if it exploded yet or not if it. Also if it exploded 500 years ago then the light will reach us in our life times so we would see it.
R.I.P for the people who was watching this video in dark

I'm fairly certain there are several stars larger then Beetlejuice including UY scuti, VY canis majoris, and stephenson 2-18
If it did, we wouldn’t know for a while. Over 500 light years later if it happened right now.
“Beetle juice”
Me:GOD THATS A HOT BEETLE
So the star farted?
Basically
my first thought
It’s called a Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME.
And it was the Mother of All CME’s, and was Still probably a Sight to behold (if we could’ve caught sight of it), but no, It is Not a sign of an impending Supernova as many Stars do this All the time, even Sol, our own Star, did it a few times before aswell, the last one from Sol actually Almost hit earth, and that was in 2012, if it hit, Everything would’ve gone to hell, the last CME that hit earth hit in the 1850’s, and it Short out most electrical systems back then, thankfully that was mainly only Power-lines and Telegraph poles, We missed the 2012 one by a hair.
but also yeah it’s a Star Fart pretty much, or more accurately a Star-Burp.
@@Kreachie no, it farted

It goes supernova after 1000 years, live streams say that Betelgeuse is going supernova now
BeetleJuice getting mad again
The dimming was the stink from Orion's armpit 😂😂
I read Betelgeuse as Beetlejuice lmfao 😆🤣
It dimmed because a space craft absorbed the explosion. Thus not wasting the energy.
A farting star called Beetlejuice that lives in Orion's armpit
Remembering that anything we see from the Star happened 500 years ago.
That small comedian guy won't hurt us
all I can think of hearing this is beetlejuice is located at the armpit and his hot gas released made him to not be bright
Thanks for the breakdown on this supergiant. Your short actually taught me something.
If Betelgeuse was mad at us.
It can or it can't.... We don't know for sure what will happen to Betelgeuse after many years.

Sorry to bring back the panic attack, but Beetlegeuse is going supernova sometime this year still.

Supernova is just extension of space getting bigger
500 light years away and y’all see a dim then it already blew 😞
So, the star farting caused the dimming.

If it were a supernova, Betelgeuse would shine brighter than a full moon.

Beetlejuice could still get us if it went into a gamma ray burst and was pointed in our Direction.
