- I've wanted to make this video for six years, I can't believe I did it!
I've never been a fan of tutorials, I like when a game shows me the ropes visually and lets me figure it out. Take a look at Super Mario 3D World and tell me what you think!
Thank you @egoraptor for inspiring me endlessly and being the driving force of why I made this, and to @bizlychannelYT for even more inspiration

the 1:49 Navi / Link edit was so good lol
I love the idea of environmental queues in gaming, but I also appreciate some straight forward tips-like the new toad in the TTYD remake that tells you about the audience and partner abilities. But I think it works so well because it’s optional! And not forced
@@neonbutemo optional is the way to go!
Great topic honestly! I adore games that hide their ‘tutorials’ in just great level design, if you can’t get over a ledge…press the darn buttons to find out which one is jump! Thanks again for the effort you put in for the video!
@@Kaonashineko Thank you so much!
It feels like level design and teaching should go hand in hand.
the way u ate
This is literally why it’s so hard for me to get invested when i start a new game. I end up putting the game down if the tutorial is boring or too hand holdy.
@lavenderanthony3094 It hinders game play so much!
Great vid Ry! A good game could definitely convey mechanics through its level-design without needing a tutorial, especially platformers that include easier mechanics to grasp. Regarding turn-based or strategy games with more complex mechanics for new players, it seems best to indicate to players there's an optional tutorial, giving players agency to skip step-by-step tutorials which often halt pacing in the process, also leaving a bad first impression as you mentioned. (The green screen and motion-tracking edits are fkn hilarious! 😂)
@qwealm Hahaha thanks, qwealm!
I'll admit, it definitely is a stretch to compare "simplistic" point A to point B game play of a platform to every single game out there, but I think there's a way to marry the two.
If you haven’t played the game “The Witness”, it does such a good job at teaching the player how to play the game without having a tutorial! There’s an intro area but it has no words and the whole game relies on learned knowledge (but the game is also pretentious as shit sometimes so you win some you lose some)
@@mollielipkowitz4665 I'll check it out!
Excellent video Ry!! I think more video games could definitely take a page from the book of platformers as far as tutorializing goes; I feel like if anything once the tutorial starts to get too wordy I tend to zone out and miss whatever it is they're trying to tell me regardless. Also thanks for teaching me the term visual conveyance!
Also it's been said before but the editing on this video is excellent, well done!
@@jellistar Yes! If I'm overloaded with words and endless text boxes, I don't comprehend a thing
tutorials make me stop wanting to play a game immediately LMAO
@@sabrinabruk4525 lmao sab!!!! They're the worst😭
SO well done ry. i was so sat for class. 100% distracted me from working in the best way possible.
Fabulous Editing Skills Ryan
Exactly! Luckily I didnt need a tutorial for your mom. She was so easy to learn
Awesome video, but you missed an incredible opportunity talking about the soccer balls bring bombs by using the pirate fish clip from SpongeBob
@mathieuo3968 oh, no, these were made in a factory....a BOMB factory
@@bubblezcavanagh they’re BOMBS
