990 for me. You can make the 990 engine more tractable by putting bigger sprockets in the back. The suspension can be tuned to your weight by a tuner. Don't think 1190 has anything on 990 offroad.
I own the 990 had it 7 years now and ridden the 1190 and i gota say it makes the 990 feel old fashioned and way behind in every area, but i wont be changing,i love my 990 and have had a lot of bikes,47 new ones in total, this is the onlynew bike ive owned over 2years,cant see me parting with it!
At last, someone made this video, it has been crying out to be made so well done guys. great video. I am returning to biking after a few years off, could i return on the 1190 if i left it in the lesser horse power mode for the first few months. 39, fit, slimish. Looking for a touring machine. Many thanks.
That was in the running when I bought my new dual sport, being that I wasn't hoping to spend that much time off pavement I went with the Triumph 1200 Explorer XC. I love my bike. The KTM is still king of the off road hands down.
@TT: Thanks for providing this awesome video. Could you please elaborate a bit on the upper crash bars? Given that the original lower bars are orange color and not the standard black, is there a risk that the upper TT bars and the lower KTM bars will deviate in color after a couple of years in sunlight, or have you been able to use the same coating as the lower bars? Moreover, are the fixing clamps of the TT bars identical in shape to those of the KTM bars, which are quite distinctive, and using the same type of screw heads? Anything else would make the TT bars look like an afterthought, which would be a shame given the excellent idea to make these upper bars available. Thanks for considering; cheers, Chris
TT probably designed these bars, but now that the new GS Adventure is coming, they probably put all effort on that biike which promisses higher sales. It has been a hassle to get Touratech products for KTM all through 2013.
Great review. Thanks for posting. I've been on the fence for over a year now on what to get and have been leaning toward the KTM. I've got some more patience in me so I'll be waiting for the 1190.
I was so close to buying the KTM 1190, but dealer support is too important. Walking into Dubai dealer (which has a bad rep already) results in a blank stare from the glammed up sales woman + lack of any knowledge when one asks. I did take a test ride, and was very impressed. In fact I loved it. The only downside was a small vibration in the seat, and I heard about the seat getting very hot (from many posters to adventure sites)…not good for the Middle East…So I got the 2013 BMW GSAdventure
Amazing for your video of Comparing KTM's 1190 Adventure R and 990 Baja Edition. I admire your driving. you are a good driver. I love your video. Thankd for sharing.🥰
+smokejumper3. We were filming in the Leavenworth area of Washington State. Fall was in the air and it was a very nice time to be riding and camping in the mountains.
Both bikes are awesome. I did over 150000km on my 950 and 990S and super stoked to be taking an 1190 out onto the dirt for the first time tomorrow. On a recent trip into Kaokoland (Northern Namibia) I was amazed how the old 990R stuck with the KTM690R's. The 1190 is going to have to be really good to shape up to the 990S. Check this video of the 690 v 990 in Namibia. RUclips ruclips.net/video/-SbTGs2MZo8/видео.html
Comment from 2024: Suspension on current model 1290 SAR's isn't much different than what is shown here... NO? Am I wrong in that observation? They've added more tech, but the suspension hardware is essentially the same.
Wow,really? This is biased.I mean;look at the way they filmed that thing,1190 is jumping, wheeling and speeding while 990 is especially driven like a granny-delibaretly.Vid was,as the name refers, supposed to be a comparison.
The 950 was revolutionary at the time, which I ride the 950s. The 1190 is the new revolution. Two different classes of machine. KTM adding 40+ usable HP, along with the technology to make it easier to apply, is the game changer.
Awesome review!! What have turned me off of the 990 is the ridiculous turning ration. 800gs so much better. I am glad to hear that the 1190 has a better one also... I just need to take one for a test drive... I don't get what is all the delay to launch it here in the USA. Cheers
hate the facy everything every bike has ride by wire, and all the elektronic stuff, so wich means more stuff for the future to break down, and stuff to maintain. at the end the less you have on the bike, the better it will be. less is more. maybe heated grip is good :p 3 990
Hi I'm 5'6/ 5'7 and ride a 2012 990 Adventure standard height and seat with no problem, very easy to ride well balanced at a stop just slid your butt to one side I love it.
Worst review ever! The suspension on the 1190 is crap compared with the 990. What a joke! Guess Touratech wanted all 990 guys to buy 1190 so the could sell their stuff!
+Shaun Timberlake. I think our guys were talking Super Tenere. We don't have the smaller Tenere in the US so we rarely mention it state-side. We think the 660 Tenere is quite handy off-road.
Granted, you are too lame to hike into an interesting part of nature, but do you need to tear-up the trails with unnecessary wheel-spin causing more erosion by getting all Beavis and Butthead? Leave that to some motocross PWT on a closed circuit. Have some respect for the great outdoors. Wankers.
990 for me. You can make the 990 engine more tractable by putting bigger sprockets in the back. The suspension can be tuned to your weight by a tuner. Don't think 1190 has anything on 990 offroad.
This is not a comparison, it's an add for the 1190...
Lame...

jeff donovan still have it?

Excellent reviewing style, all about the riding and the capabilities which should be all that matters in this class.
don't hate keeper ! everyone wants a ktm. 990.. but not me !...cause I already have one

I find it funny that they can call a 1000cc v twin (old bike) power delivery as "peaky"...... Its hardly a two stroke....

The upper crash bars are designed and built by Touratech, and should be available stateside in early 2014.
1:04 - 1:06 sick man! give me goosebumps!

What's not to love about the 1190 he asks at the end? Not a lot by the look of it. Perhaps, just the price.
Awesome review and riding guys!
Love that north central Washington area!
990 the best
Amazing for your video of Comparing KTM's 1190 Adventure R and 990 Baja Edition. I admire your driving. you are a good driver. I love your video. Thankd for sharing.🥰
When does the stripped down 1190SE come out? Bring back the SE!
Which Touratech parts are you trying to acquire for your KTM?
can you please tell me where you guys were riding is this Canada or USA and where abouts Thank you and amazing video
great video what are the prices of the two bikes
What did you use for the aerial shots? DJI Phantom with Gopro black?
thanks fellas.
Where was this filmed? I swear I was riding the same area this summer
Where were you riding exactly? If you dont mind.
Thank you
+smokejumper3. We were filming in the Leavenworth area of Washington State. Fall was in the air and it was a very nice time to be riding and camping in the mountains.
can anyone tell me whats the name of the music at the beginning? it's awesome!
Anyone know if they do the Baja in the UK?
Great. Now I want the 1190 EVEN MORE
does anybody know where the upper crashbar on the 1190 is from? can't find it
Where was this filmed
Thanks man
Its very rare to find videos of people praising more electronic on adventure bikes...
Hardly any comparison. Boring waste of time, eh?
Fantastic Video!!!!!!! Mucho Excellent!!
+Papa Bear Alaska Thanks for your kind words.
My pleasure!!!
Always loved tt review!
perfect videó. Thanks. 👍😉

I believe it's similar but with revised spring rates and valving that generally are considered a significant improvement.
pensavo che le strade franassero solo in Calabria!
Tall and heavy that is the main problem right??
For off-road 990 in another level ! No comparison here

"Granny" was on the leaders ass the whole way.
Showww de pilotagem e belíssimas imagens 👏👏👏👏👏.
É like 👍. E inscrito já!!!
Nunca la comparan con la 990 R !!

Love tt review!
Very proffesional review but the background music is just annoying, I wanna hear the motors. 😊
I know where I can buy the 990 Baja for $7k now. Should I?
3:40 448 horsepower? Wtf is he talking about?
48 bhp more than old one
Jacek K he said 448 not 48!
eero nieminen to much excitment probably ;)
schould be 148 ;)
He said the FULL hundred and forty eight.
"The full 148 HP in sport mode" thats what he said
Awesome review!! What have turned me off of the 990 is the ridiculous turning ration. 800gs so much better. I am glad to hear that the 1190 has a better one also...

Would a man of just 5'6 struggle with the 990?

Thanks for letting us know you disagree with the opinions two riders expressed while riding the bikes back to back on our 7 year old video .
An insult to those who know , propaganda
More capable off road than a Tenere?
Super Tenere sure but a 163 kg Tenere?
Seriously?
+Shaun Timberlake. I think our guys were talking Super Tenere. We don't have the smaller Tenere in the US so we rarely mention it state-side. We think the 660 Tenere is quite handy off-road.
カッコイイ!!
That drone footage was some serious cringe
Sucks being broke.
that was 4 years ago, your able to get something? just get a 750 tenere from 1990. i had one. its awesome also!

990 the best 👍
Would a man of just 5'6 struggle with the 990?
most likely. i'm 5'10 and I barley tippy-toe the bike. you can lower it, but i'm not sure by how much
I'm 5'6/5'7 and ride a 2012 990 Adventure without a problem love it so well balanced and easy to ride love it.
