Looks great Mark.......unable to see there had been one fitted. If the car was a different colour, going by what the other contributor said about cracking in the future, a vinyl roof may have helped but not on a black car 🥴 Can't wait for more vids 👌👏👏👏👏
Your not far away with the repair, and I’m sure you will get it better, however it’s very difficult to have a repair like that to be 100% perfect, and it’s down to whether you can live with it. Personally I would have skinned it, but you’ve went so far with it I’d see it through now and see how it turns out after another block down and gloss guide coat. If all else fails….vinyl 😀
Getting there mark, you need a longer block, I used a flexi block and it follows the curves on the roof, my roof was battered super straight now, Gavin pink has some great blocks take a look, try to use epoxy primer as well it will help with any micro blistering in the future 👍
Fair play mark, you're a grafter. I did work experience at dane motors in mold and saw an 18 year old putting a sunroof in a brand new vw using a jigsaw. Apparently they used to sell the cut out to paint manufacturers to colour match😮
I did the same thing last year on a fiesta, removing factory sunroof that had rusted all the way round, got it looking pretty good, but with the amount of filler because of the distortion, started cracking after a year, ended up fitting carbon roof, If I did it again I think I would get a piece wheeled & bond in with structural adhesive. I feel ashamed I used to break these RS's up for parts in the 80's & 90's but back then they weren't worth anything. Still a good job, black gloss takes no prisoners.😀
I agree with the sunroof delete. If it wasn't there from factory shouldn't be there now. .. Difficult repair to be honest. But like your idea of sparying an actual top coat. Especially in black. This will show all the inperfections. .. Could try circling the individual flaws with chalk/crayon Then take a picture & use this as a guide to see were to focus the most work. .. Definitely improve the lighting. . Perhaps some lower light source closer & at 90°/parallel to the roof.? this will make it easier to see the flaws.. ...
I think it needs more sanding by the looks it's too high over the repair. Did you step/joggle the new panel as that would've helped, also use a guide coat to show highs and lows . Getting there mate, 👍
@@MarkEdwards ohhh is it, my eyes mate sorry 🙈🤦♂️ having said that black's even worse! I've got the same job to do on a fwd RS2000, my plan is to cut up another roof skin, joggle around the edge and panel bond it in 🤔 although mine's red and it's a rally car! Good luck with it mate, you'll get there 👍
The video illustrates that there’s a fair bit of work involved to get it there. Good job
You’re right, got the same amount of work to do again when I get back on it too😁
Jeasus what sunroof you wouldn’t know there was ever a sunroof in that car
Brilliant job and brilliant videos
Thanks Damien😁

Thanks, you speak sense😁
Would rather see as much as the original steel kept in place as possible , there's far to many Magnum mongrals about ..
Thanks, I like this way of thinking, , but I can’t fully endorse it, as I fitted Magnum inner wings😂

Thanks Wayne, an 18year old with a jigsaw😂
Remember, this is all your fault, the car, not the sun roof😁

Thanks Stuart, you’re right about the light, but I could also feel some of it, but I got fed up of filling and sanding 😁
Great work Mark,one day.......
Thanks, one day at a time😁
comming together now mark looking good
Thanks Justin
Well done Mark you wouldn’t have known it had a sunroof
What should you do next....put some black around the holes on the wheel rims
Thanks Billy, but as for the wheel rims, RS and Mexico rims don’t have the black bits😁

As I said, this is not the finished article, I could feel by hand the highs and lows at this point, but just wanted to see what it looked like 👍🏻
Not an easy thing to repair mate 🤔 especially in midnight blue! Personally I'd of skinned it... Be interesting to see the final outcome 👍
Yep, you could be right, except it’s black😁

Thanks, in hindsight I probably could have gone down your route, or welded it a lot less and sealed it inside and out🤷♂️
Might have done better using panel bond as this stuff is so strong but no distortion thru welding maybe put a vinyl roof on as a lot of these had them
Yes, sticking it on may have been better, I hoped to get less distortion, but even little welds shrink back😬
