History of the Cootie game - 1948

  • In 1948 Herbert W. Schaper, a mailman from Minnesota, added six legs to a fishing lure he created. Putting those legs on his lure gave him the idea to create the game we know today as Cootie. It’s gone through a lot of transformations over the years, but even-though it may look a little different it's still the fun game Herbert created years ago.

    Thanks. Great memories. We played Cooties circa 1960. Also had Silly Safari, Mousetrap, Green Ghost and others. (Green Ghost was circa 1966.) Also played Probe, Sorry!, Password, Scrabble and of course Monopoly. Our family sometimes got goofed up with Monopoly, since we'd want to buy property, etc., for one another.
