- In this video I am going to show you the steps to restore the recovery partition and fix the reagentc error that says "The Windows RE image was not found"

Very good video, I solved my problem and I also found out that you can attach custom (bootable?) images to reagent. For example, I attached my MS-DaRT bootable image and now I have all the DaRT tools directly in the RE without having to boot from an external USB or DVD every time. I tested every functionality and it all works flawlessly, the integration is perfect. So people, if you have an ISO of MS-DaRT (you can make your own for free, there are plenty of videos explaining how), definitely replace the default RE with it. It's miles better and everything works fine. As I said, good video, too.

I once got a malware virus that can take control over your computer (administration) from afar. The hacker was smart enough to delete The Windows RE image so that I couldn't reset my pc and get rid of the malware. You literally saved my life and many of my accounts including this RUclips account, even though I couldn't recover my Facebook and Microsoft account in time. @@ooplycrossing2744 I downloaded cracked version of adobe photoshop from unknown RUclips channel (probably Russian) which they immediately deleted their video sometime after I got malware virus. You just have to avoid downloading cracked versions of apps, find reliable channels if you really wanna download them, but the safest way is to buy those apps from official websites.

If you have used "reagentc /disable" as part of resizing the recovery partition, it "should" copy the winre.wim file off the recovery partition into c:\windows\system32
ecovery. If it doesn't, you need to provide the file as per the instructions but you may find that the ReAgent.xml file still points to the file being on the recovery partition so it will still fail. You may also need to give it a copy of ReAgent.xml that can be found in the same place.
you are a godsend, I spent days trying to figure out why it still fails !
This needs to be pinned to the top. Many guides are not mentioning this and it is happening to many people. Though it seems so simple to try, many are overlooking this simple added step of copying both files when RE Image is still not being found. You definitely helped me with this.

@@just.kennethhh Dirigete a tu "ISO", sí ya tienes instalado 7zip.. da clic derecho en la ISO, selecciona 7zip> Extraer en ficheros "Windows" (en caso de que tu ISO se llame Windows), ya que se haya descomprimido la ISO, dirigete a la carpeta "sources" y ubica el archivo "install.esd" ( algunas veces aparece como "install.wim" dependiendo el lenguaje o la antigüedad de la misma), y descomprime: clic derecho sobre el archivo "install" (esd. o .wim, según como te aparezca)7zip> extraer en install.esd.... ya que se descomprima el archivo "install.esd" (o bien, "install.wim") verás que dentro de la carpeta aparecerán otras carpetas como si se tratáse de una instalación de Windows como tal; entonces dirigete a Windows>System32>Recovery y copia los archivos "WinRE.wim" y "Reagent.xml" , ahora dirígete a la unidad C: y sigue la ruta: C:/Windows/System32/Recovery y pega allí los archivos que copiaste... cuando el sistema te lo indique dá clic en "SI" cuando te indique que el archivo "reagent.xml" ya se encuentra en esa ubicación y si deseas sobreescribirlo (ya que, si no lo haces la falla persistirá porque tu archivo "reagent.xml" ya se encuentra corrompido). Cuando finalices con estos pasos, ya podrás continuar en el cmd con los pasos para habilitar nuevamente "Reagentc"... cuando ya te notifique que la acción se estableció correctamente puedes volver a la ruta: C:/Windows/System32/Recovery y como verás, el archivo "WinRE.wim" habrá desaparecido, pues reagentc lo habrá movido a la partición de recuperación (WinRE Tools). Deseo que mi respuesta te sea de ayuda.
P.D. Si en lugar de una ISO, ya posees una unidad USB con el instalador de Windows, más fácil aún: tan sólo ve a la carpeta "sources" y ubica "install.esd" ó "install.wim" y descomprimelo con 7zip y ya buscas: Windows/System32/Recovery donde estarán los archivos: "Reagent.xml" y "WinRE.wim" para que los copies en la unidad C:
OJO: No vayas a intentar descomprimir el install.esd directamente sin seguir los pasos que te describo, porque de hacerlo así demorarás las horas y horas esperando a que se descomprima... mejor házlo como te lo sugiero.

After converting, I was worried that I can't get reagentc because the conversion deleted my recovery partition.
But I figured that since I was trying to install windows 11, and after installing it, I got my recovery partition back so it's all good.
Haha pc hobby noob here. Do u mean that I can just not care about this and when I finally install Windows 11 it will come back?

To anyone who had a .ESD file instead of the one in the video in the sources folder INSTALL 7 ZIP i don't know how to mount it but IF YOU OPEN IT WITH 7 ZIP it will work, you can go, copy the file and enable Windows RE

I faced some problems after deleting my recovery partition and without your assistance, it would have taken me down the path of reinstallation. My only question is whether the index 1 that you used would have different recovery file relative to other indices (read other windows versions)? Thanks again for your help.

Figured out the reason, needed to change path for reagent image using command
reagentc /setreimage /path C:\windows\system32
ecovery
after that using commands
reagentc /enable
reagentc /info
worked exactly as in the video - winre.wim file disappeared from System32/Recovery folder and changed to new Windows RE location:
\\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition4\Recovery\WindowsRE
Which basically means that it is now located in drive C:Recovery instead of being on a hidden partition

When doing a reagentc /disable the Winre.wim is not mooved to c:\windows\system32
ecovery folder. I disappears from the recovery partition, but goes somewhere else. Where?

Thank you for the very helpful instruction video. In my case (deleted and then recreated the recovery partition) i needed to add another step after I had copied the winre.wim file to actually "activate" the file. I had to use the following command
reagentc /setreimage /path C:\Windows\System32\Recovery

It doesnt work, the "Windows RE location" stays empty, and the status also stays as Disabled, the wim file dissapears aswell. And the boot config data, reccovert image index, and custom image index is just a bunch of 0's, and recovery image location and custom image index are both empty.
running "reagentc /enable" also says that it was successful, but it doesnt do anything. And restarting doesnt do anything either.

Hey Dude! Thanks for the such an informative video. I hope it would be really helpful to others. But, if I'm aren't wrong, the Windows ISO File didn't contained any file named 'install.wim' as it was shown replaced with 'install.esd'. The same reason I caught while typing the command to mount it. However, if I'm wrong somehow, please respond to me because the problem wasn't solved. Otherwise, It was Really Really Useful & Helpful

Thank you. I originally had windows 10 but upgraded to windows 11 some time ago. Didn't realize the recovery partition not updated. I just installed a new SSD and not sure what the issue is and was thinking of reset but found this issue.

You must use windows own File Explorer when copying the file to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery. I've used Total Commander and it was not working although the file looks like it was copied.

There is no install.wim file anymore,
COPY both items from the recovery to your local recovery. both the .html and .wim or it may not work. GREAT VIDEo

Hi, i am not able to delete the mount folder in my c drive after my reagentc issue was resolved. I keep getting the error "you require permission from user to make changes to this folder". i am the admin and it is my pc. please help

@apnaabasyn4627 thanks for your reply but it was already unmounted. One of the files in the folder was being used by the disk partition windows software i had installed hence it wasn't that easy as it seemed. Nonetheless, got it sorted.

I keep getting "Error 13 the data is invalid" whenever I try to use the dism to mount-wim. Any ideas what the issue could be?

Hello. In my installation media device there is no "install.wim" file. There is an "install.esd" file instead, which has the same size (almost 4GB). Can I do the procedure with this file anyway? Shall I rename its extension? Thanks!

I dont have the windows installation media but i created a bootable recovery drive and in the sources folder I have "Reconstruct.wim" of 3.9 GBs, "Reconstruct.wim2" 1.5 GBs and "boot.wim" 421 MBs , I tried mounting with the first option of wim of 3.9GBs and yet I didn't see any wim file in my temp. mount folder in C drive .
Can we grab another Recovery from a PC that has it and copy it directly to the Recovery on the affected machine?
