Just to add a little nuance, for those of you who can't understand Swedish: When the troll-woman runs away at the end crying, a more literal translation of what she says is that if she had been able to get the young man, she would have been able to avoid her (future) torment; this suggests that she understands that eternal punishment awaits her, but she thought that she could avoid it by seducing and marrying a Christian man---which is not really how it works, but you can't blame her for trying, I guess!
The Christian man in question had resolve, so he could've converted her and saved a soul from eternal damnation, instead of condemning her for being born into a tribe of pagans.
I think the thing is, trolls are believed to have no souls, as they are not human, so they wouldn't have eternal torment but eternal nothingness after death, but by marrying a human they could gain a soul and have eternal life. Unfortunately they try to do this through deception and bribery rather than a genuine desire to love or repent. They don't have eternal souls like humans, after all, only an earthly mind. The song is simply amazing. Just the sound or rather the "feeling" of words is a pure pleasure (but maybe it's just an exotic of it for someone who comes from the family of slavic languages). Anyway, I remember that when I heard it for the first time I was really concerned if it's some pagan song that could be dangerous for the soul. But when I read the text I liked it even more. But for me the main melody, will be always an "Old Camp" from Gothic 1...
@@luizumhumano7111 in my opinion it's not a sin per se, but it comes with some danger. Especially if it's not just some neutral music but created by someone with different faith (for example Bach) but music created for religious purposes. The most obvious example is satanist music which was created to worship demons. But I think there is a lot of danger in pagan music too. Also the protestant songs brings a lot of danger but in a different way. They seem to worship the God but they can also mix truth with some minor lies. So, as I said it's not a sin but we should keep in mind that everything we listen to, watch, read etc. has some influence on us and in long term can lead us to false.

@@AlphaDaxter1 Have you seen all the country ball jokes about Sweden being gay? Thats one problem with modern day Sweden perhaps. And mix that with the lack of faith that can be seen all over Europe except for Poland so far.
The temptations of the troll-woman are not too unlike the temptations Satan offered to Christ Himself. Ultimately, just as Satan falsely promised Christ the entire world if He would but fall down and worship Satan, so too does the troll offer riches to the noble knight if he will but abandon his faith for her, which is what the marriage to her really means.
Then why does she cry and weep in the end? And say "If he married me my plight would surely end"? Seems like either she has been affected by a curse or is seeking salvation. She never asked him to renounce his faith.

Trolls are a facinating concept in medieval folklore. It is believed after the fall of the angels who became demons, some were sent to earth and took a material form. One of these are trolls, who stole men's children because of their jealousy that men can attain eternal salvation.
Ironically I thought this song was originally a Pagan Viking one. How wrong am i ! - It's origin is on a christian man refusing to marry a troll because she is not christian.
@@romainvicta3076 We don't know that for sure either. What we can say for sure is that our main source (Poetic Edda) is from medieval times, and the rest is based on speculation. Beowulf on the other hand, is most likely older. But we still don't know if it was sung or if it was popular by any means. So I'm taking your claim of being "sure" of something with a grain of salt. Scandinavia an incredible land full of stories that one can only think that they belong to fairy tales or legends of ancient times that only the hyperboria could have ever been told in said lands. Therefore, they became brave men and women who, seeking to escape the decline of their world, Ragnarok, which not even their gods, forces of nature incarnate could. They looked for a new future in the seas mounted on their dragons they explored all the world that they could. But as warriors and pirates they plundered lands which would without thinking give them a new future. There they found yet a new god which was one and three at the same time, a god who defeated death and who was not a tribal god that was worshiped by countless peoples such as the Byzantine heirs of the Hellenic tradition, the Welsh heirs of the mythical adventures of King Arthur, the Gaelics who were the only ones worthy of the land of Eire after facing and seeing the constant invaders who wanted it or their distant cousins who embraced this new god who achieved feats that not even Thor achieved even in his cusp then history would change forever to see the clash of two worlds forever.

And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.

@@ludwigramirez4711 There's nothing to be admitted - Croatians and Serbians are two different people by the very DNA, culture, civilization in general.
Hello brother, you can tell me If listen musics of other religions is Sin?

Fun fact: I performed in a community musical version of a Swedish folktale called "The Flower of Sunnymount Crest". The opening song that I sang was this tune with different lyrics.

I LOVE GARMARNA THANKS FOR POSTING THIS.
This is chillingly timely, as I've just heard of yet another husband and his children being abandoned by the feminist woman he had chosen to marry. We all owe it to our children to ascertain, first and foremost, that our spouses are virtuous, pious people.
Belíssima obra, que as terras hiperboréas do norte da Europa voltem a santa sé e a Roma.
I absolutely adore this channel and the work you do in making these videos that share not just great music but also the translation. A lot of of great artists are featured on here, who I would like to hear more of. Could you add information to the video description on where to find the original performers? Quite fitting if you think about the situation in modern Scandinavia. But one can still hope and pray
Vi gör lite Trolleri
Satan didn't know that christ is already the owner, Greater and God of this world.
Satan dared to tempt christ but christ himself he was never temped
Then why does she cry and weep in the end? And say "If he married me my plight would surely end"? Seems like either she has been affected by a curse or is seeking salvation. She never asked him to renounce his faith.
Yes, not that she never offer him her love.
She could have converted but didnt and instead spazzed out and blamed him. He also saw through her lies and called her out on them:
Very beautiful

Always thought that the troll was a allegory for a pagan noblewoman.
trollkarl in swedish means male magician (karl by itself means man) so troll is magician/witch.
Thats actually a smart way to look at it. By this time I know troll in this context stands for mage but I didn't see it that way. Thank you for this perspective.

you are back!!!
My heart is gladdened by your return. Since we're in Advent, is there any chance for you to translate Catholic Christmas music from the Caribbean? Puerto Rico and Cuba both have beautiful Villancicos, which follow traditions dating all the way back to the 15th century. I'd love to see "Villancico Yaucono" from my home or "Si al ver en el oriente" written by the great composer Esteban Salas. Regardless of whether or not you choose to translate these pieces, I think you'll enjoy hearing them.

Trolls are a facinating concept in medieval folklore. It is believed after the fall of the angels who became demons, some were sent to earth and took a material form. One of these are trolls, who stole men's children because of their jealousy that men can attain eternal salvation.
Oh, thank you for sharing this. I am also thinking they are nephilim
What? Trolls are evil nature spirits, where have you gotten this information from?
Troll are from the viking age Nose folklore.
Ironically I thought this song was originally a Pagan Viking one. How wrong am i ! - It's origin is on a christian man refusing to marry a troll because she is not christian.
shes a demon not many things can be worse than that
There are no songs preserved from viking times.
@@OggeViking This is not necessarily true. Poems were often sung and were the songs of the time. Völuspá is one example - beowulf i'm sure was another
@@romainvicta3076 We don't know that for sure either. I'll rather listen to the scholarly consensus and their debates.
@@OggeViking yes you are right ; but it could be a good possibility considering theatre and the long tradition of singing that goes along with it in alot of cultures. Its not out of the realm of reality
I may be orthodox, but holy fuck is this BEAUTIFUL! Swedish girls sing equally as good folk/ethno songs as Serbian girls!

Troll woman: Hey, mr handsome knight, would you like to do something fun with me? I pay you. 😏
Knight: No thanks bro. I'm a Christian. 😒
Troll women: 😢
(Not gonna lie. It's cool)
Yes, but its also about rejecting materialistc wealth and not bcoming an apostate
This is a very reduccionist interpretation of the poem, sorry, you lost something big and beauty.
and the troll woman wails because she still have no soul.
4:22 BASED
Scandinavia an incredible land full of stories that one can only think that they belong to fairy tales or legends of ancient times that only the hyperboria could have ever been told in said lands.

An important message to all men in our times. A rich non-christian woman, as rich as she may be, will never bring happiness to your life. Sir Mannelig knew it, for he was a Christian himself. What about you, will you accept the mountain troll's proposal?
No, never
I don't think she was rich, remember what the song told about her having a mouth full of lies 0:31, she was probably luring him to marry her, so she can have his riches
@@ericjorge5365 It strikes a point regardless of it being a lie or not, for she was a mountain troll not for being rich or not, but for rejecting our Lord Jesus Christ.
No as she follows Norse-Germanic Paganism, a faith of the devil.
Joshua 24:15-18 (KJV) And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
