- Ford Racing is offering some awesome new beadlock wheels for the Ford Raptor. These wheels have an ingenious design that allows them to have a tire mounted for street use, and then be transformed with a special beadlock ring for off road use. This enables the driver to lower the tire pressure for additional traction off road.

2. Built a full size spare for my truck today. Bead is rubber to metal contact. Tools needed vice grips to pull old valve stem out, 3 tire irons, soapy water, air gage, and an air compressor or working vehicle to use one at a gas station. First few times doing it make sure no kids around you will swear like a sailor til you get the hang of it.
This is great. I don't know much about offroading, I don't even care about it, but this guy is entertaining to watch and I'm sure I'll check in next time, this is some cool stuff.
Do all bead locks only lock the outboard bead? It would seem the inboard bead could unseat when aired down. What am I missing?
+BC4Lyphe the outboard bead is enough for almost every situation because of the stiffness of the tire itself holds the inner bead on and with the weight of the vehicle pushing out on the inner bead its very difficult to break. But you can get a dual beadlock (dont know if you can buy them or have to make them) but it is one of those things that is overkill. Also mounting would be a pain in the ass and retorquing would also be a pain
The inside (backside) bead is called a safety bead. On most if not all bead lock wheels.

You might have a point, but:
"The terms "wheel" and "rim" are often used synonymously. Some use "rim" for only the outer portion of a wheel, where the tire mounts. Others use "rim" to mean the entire metal part to which the tire mounts, because the rim and the wheel are often cast or stamped from a single piece of metal instead of being distinct as with wire wheels. At the same time, "wheel" may refer to the entire rotating assembly, including the tire." (wikipedia)
For those wondering bout the odd 47.9 ft-lb torque spec, Ford probably made the spec a nice round number in newton-meters and then converted it to ft-lbs for the American instructions. 47.9 ft-lb is 65 Nm.

It should be noted there is no law that states bead locks are illegal for street use. Its just very important to make sure you check the torque on the ring bolts regularly. The most important time is after 100 miles or so. As the tire may move around some. After that point, every 3k when you rotate is a good idea.

when you are airing up a bead lock wheel don't sit it laying down, stand it up as if it were on the vehicle, if the bead lock fails for whatever reason it won't blow your head off when your leaning over the tire

Instead of having to deal with 80-100,000$ rigs, and executive lifestyles, what would a po'boy trip cost?
When me and the guys do Rubicon ( starting in utah) we usually run $600-700 for the week!
And this is 10 or 12 vehicles.
In all this we live pretty good and eat well and strangely enough, while we hit the hardest trails we don't brake that often 🤨

They are illegal in the US due to the fact that they are not an error proof system of mounting. The DOT requires that a tire and wheel combination cannot come apart.They are also REALLY hard to balance. Most people who use them don't even bother attempting to balance the tire, since they never get above 5 mph

Head over to any 4x4 forum for more info but I'm pretty sure they're not. There aren't any codes (yet) that state they are illegal. If there's a state that does not allow multipiece rims on cars or non commercial trucks, then sure they'd be illegal. Here's the thing about beadlocks, they're dangerous if you don't maintain them correctly. Some do come with a DOT approval, however DOT approvals are not required for use on public roads.

13mm can be used as a substitute when you don't have a 1/2" socket.. most metric vehicles don't use 13mm its an "odd" size...

If Wiki is referring to the entire rotating assembly as a wheel. Would that include hub and rotors as well? I've never heard that used.
If you walked into a tire store or tire rack and ask for a wheel. You will get a wheel without a tire.
If the word is used on its own:
tire = rubber part (ex. michelin makes tires)
wheel = metal part (ex. bbs makes wheels)
rim = outer edge of wheel
wheel and tire = wheel and tire
anything else is slang or contextual. Thoughts?
Fred, (not sure if you have already, I'll look) you need to make a video for the assembly of double beadlocks.

That looked so much nicer then trying to put on a set of Low profile 255/30/R18.... normally ends up with 2 people hanging on the tyre to get it inside the beads....

In general, beadlock wheels are not designed for freeway speeds (60-70mph) on tarmac.
I cringe every time I hear these beautiful $700 rims scraping that concrete lol
And thats why it is probably not his personal stuff :) If you check out shows like roadkill they regulary thrash high dollar motors that would make people cry if it happened to their own stuff bought with hard earned cash. It does make for awesome shows!

Elvish, I think you are the caveman. I don't build anything to thrash. I build stuff to be functional and get me where I am going. Generally I have a bit of fun building and a little fun getting to the destination. No need to thrash anything.

If you use balancing beads that's not a problem at all.They do make some dot approved beadlocks h1 hummers have them,And 2 different aftermarket companies make them now also.
Does the truck come out from factory with street version mounting or offroad (use the actual bead lock) version?
One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that if you have the bead lock on the front of the tire and you air down, what is keeping the bead on the back side from coming undone?

at high speeds the bead of the wheel will rip off the wheel needs a bit of space to move so you need normal wheels for higher speeds

I've never done offroading, or put my own tires on ... so I got a load of questions,
1) Don't you need 2 lockers? I mean, the tire has 2 beads so shouldn't it have 2?
2) Is the bead just a rubber to metal contact? I always thought they put something on it at tire shops.
Well the beadlock rim fastens against the wheel which will be tight enough to hold and bead and will be air tight.

I think if you forgot the valve stem, you could push the rear bead in and fish it in there with your hand from the back side
Skyline Fabricator doubtful it would be fairly hard and a fairly tight squeeze
They'd need to be DOT approved, and the primary reason (AFAIK) that they wouldn't be is that in the days of yore beadlocks could separate at highway speed and you'd lose the tire. Also back in the day they leaked air at a slight but continuous rate, also bad for tarmac handling/safety. Also, the primary use for beadlocks, ultra-low PSI, is dangerous at high speeds on tarmac due to lots of heat being generated in the tires.
What we never got to see the end result. Wanted to see some wheeling with those tires aired down grrr.

There are DOT approved beadlocks, but most companies don't want to deal with the liability, legality, and possible insurance nonsense.

Achisachis73 no this is beadlocked wheels not half beadlocked fuck how dumb are people. He fucking said it in the video the back bead has what is called a safety bead.... and once it's seated in there the only way it's coming out is if you want it to.

It's just a common misunderstanding that they're less safe because people incorrectly install them. they are actually much safer than normal tires.

The tire is resting on the beadlock, instead of the actual rim, I'd assume it's more reliable.
You can and they're legal both federally and all states. If they're properly maintained, with proper hardware, and re-torqued religiously, it's ok. I guess you're from the UK, IDK about you guys.

Bead lock rims haven't been tested and certified by DOT for street use. Not enough bead locks are sold in the US to warrant the cost to certify the rims.
