The whole point of building the airport in the sea is to reduce sound from the planes in residential areas. Building it in the Ijselmeer would still be too close to residential areas. Plus, the Ijselmeer is also a fresh water reserve and recreational area. And all that would be lost.

    • @ToepnToep

not just recreative the ijselmeer is actually a nature reserve on dome international list
thats also why we can drill for gas there even though there is more natural gas there than in Groningen
also even more important we want to get rid of the fly and decent routes over populated areas
in this way planes can stay up in the air mucht longer regardless of whete the wind blows

2:16 don't live near the airport then..
That is something I also do not understand here in the Netherlands. Example: Someone moves to the countryside and his neighbours have had a farm there for more than 50 years, the new residents are bothered by the stench that the farm makes, the judge now decides that the farm may no longer make a stench or in other words they must leave.
What I do not understand is why a newcomer has the right to complain about that while the situation has been like that there for many years.

    • @DutchGio

Same with moving next (~10 km) from an airport and complaining about the noise. Like, you move to a cheapish house due to the airport, and then complain about the noise levels of the planes. If you move to a house next to an airport, you shouldn't be able to go to the court about the noise levels.

I'd go for an old skool windmill design (if possible), the blades of the mill being 4 runways, 2 for take-off, 2 for landing and parralel to them runways for taxiing to and from the runways to the body of the mill where the actual departure and arrival halls are located.
EDIT: I SWEAR I commented before Charlie said he would make a windmill too LOL!

I have lived right next to Schiphol for a long time. It doesn't bother me. I also find it strange when people come to live here and then complain. I think you shouldn't live there then.
Under the current economic situation, I don't think an airport will be built at sea. It is also unnecessary. There is still enough room for additional houses here and if we can limit the number of short-distance flights. Schiphol does not need to grow any further. However, investments should be made in High Speed Rail and more metros. A good starting point should be that you should be able to reach Berlin from Schiphol within 3 hours by High Speed Train. In fact, all European capitals within 1000 km of Schiphol should be reachable by train within 4 hours. That seems to me to be a better and cheaper way to achieve it.

There has been a lot of pushback from environmentalists and the fact that seawater erodes equipment too fast. So, who knows.... im all for it tbh. Schiphol is too small and because of all the restrictions, smaller airports are popping up all over the country!! Make that make sense.

We are a constitutional monarchy though, and in practice the government that is chosen by the people governs the Netherlands and not the king. So we are not officially a republic, but since the king doesn't really participate in decision making like the parlement does it has become a strech to call the Netherlands a monarchy. Without the king we are a republic, and the king is not governing so the king is only good for international relations and stuff like that.

Hey Charlie, for the idea to use the Ijsselmeer. The Markermeer (which is part of the Ijsselmeer) was/is supposed to be a polder. There is even a dam for most of the area for this reason. (you can see it on Google maps) But you know, these days wildlife is a big issue. Today it is a bird breeding ground and what not. Even though we are lacking usable ground for living space and stuff. Weirdly they rather take that ground from our farmers instead. Though I must admit, the Ijsselmeer is used as a freshwater reservoir. This is used for either drink water or to combat the salinization of our agricultural land. Crops don't grow on ground that is too salt. (As far as I understand) It is a weird situation.
To answer your question, if they would polder the Markermeer it would be used to built more houses or farms.

  • @obelic71
    @obelic71 Месяц назад

To be fair this is only a pitch by an enginering firm not an actual plan.
A official recent goverment study stated that building a new airport at sea including connecting rail and road works could could go up to a 1000 BLN euro!
And it will take at least 30-50 years to complete the entire project technicly.
As the facts learned from reclaimed lands projects in Hong Kong (entire airport) Tokio (additional runway for Narita airport) palm and the world project in Dubai it takes up to decade longer then expected that the reclaimed land would settle, stable enough to be built on.
The groundlevel of Hong Kong Airport who was the first mega ground reclamation project sank upto 1 meter.
The crux in this pitch is that the massive lands were Schiphol airport resides on is one of the most valuable pieces of land in Europe.
Schiphol had already a secundary airport (Lelystad) that was upgraded to take the holiday charter and airfreight overflow.
Now the upgrade is finished its not allowed to open for passengers due to several court rulings.
Also Schiphol itself (they fucked up by falsifying lower flight and passenger numbers) also has to decline flight movements up to 20% due to a court ruling.
International airlines are not happy with this so they sew Schiphol at the international commerce trading court for violating the open skies treaty.
Also building a new major airport in one of the bussiest shiping lanes of the world competing with offshore windturbines, oil/gas rigs and fishing grounds would become a legal minefield resulting in decades of courtbattles.

The IJsselmeer lake has just as much chance to be foggy as the Northsea. In fact, it is known to be quite dangerous to sail the IJsselmeer. And the reason why it needs to be 7 miles offshore is that the wind parks reach out up to 3-5 miles offshore. These wind parks start relatively close to the shore.

And to fish our folk from places like Urk and Wieringen get very cranky when they can't fish...It is also the most central place of out country....The pollution of the airfield would poison us all. We don't want the airport near towns and cities. For various reasons like noise, polution, etc. Plus we don't want to sacrifice nature that is scarce already. So an airport in the north sea is the best option. As well for future planning in regards to housing and stuff.

@22:42 The goal of moving Schiphol Airport is to remove the pollution (moving it is no real solution) and the noise of constant planes taking of and landing to where it's less invasive for the densely populated Netherlands.
Note that the runways suggested in the more serious options, @01:18, and moreover, @01:20 and @01:23 are parallel to the coast line...
The goal is not to move it to the water. Your options would still be surrounded by urban areas, so...👴🤷‍♂

For safe airport operations the North Sea is not just a challenge…it is a hostile environment with extreme conditions for weather and birds. Airport operations are about predictability and robustness. Totally unachievable there. Ohh, the contractors can build it, no doubt there. But it will never be a safe place to operate.
This is indeed a jo-jo plan that ops up every 10-20 years. Fact is that area is filled up with huge wind farms now that combined with the shipping routes fills the place.
And the circular runways…planes are not build for centrifugal forces on their gear. This is a noobs wet dream..

Then, only a year after you're here they build an airport just on the other side of the road from your house.... You wouldn't like that, I guess. You won't be able to sell your house to anyone, because no-one wants to live so close to an airport. The worth of your house would fall to almost nothing while your mortgage would still be very high. Think about that before you say something like "just don't live so close to the airport".

Well, Schiphol is a bit insane for such a large urbanised area. Depending on the wind sometimes, but often planes come down and go up from 4 sides, and all lined up in the air, so every 30 seconds engines are roaring to slow them down or get up. So a normal conversation sitting in your garden isn't posstble in a 30 km radius often because of the noise 24-7. I know the Dutch complain a lot, but when you live there ........... people do get sick because of that actually. And you can't sell your house, for it is worthless by now, nobody wants it. So moving is often not an option.

Since the EU decided to put the wolves on the list of protected animals the wolves are back not only in countries like Austria and Germany but also in Belgium and The Netherlands. Several hundreds of sheep and also a few pony's and calves have been killed in this two countries. The last weeks there were a few minor incidents involving wolves and children near Urecht. First of all, I don’t think this project is feasible, since we have many economic challenges that will and should get an higher priority.
I would like to add that The Netherlands is nothing like the US. We are the fifth densely populated country of the world (only taking countries into account with more than 1 million inhabitants, so not only 5th in Europe). So if you would move Schiphol, that is now located on land that was claimed from the sea that lies inland, you would make sure you don’t move it to a place it will become another problem in the next decades.
Further more there are very strict regulations where you can and cannot build. For most, if places you pointed out, the government will never give out a permit to build. That is why there is a huge shortage of housing and some people are on a waiting list for about 12 years.
    1. 5th densely populated country in the world 2. Huge housing shortage 3. Very strict ruling for building new properties
Those three points make it challenging to build large projects. And since our population is still growing, we have to think about the future. Building outwards, would be the safest bet and frees up land for housing, so I totally understand their thought.
The noise complaints are not as easy as people like to portrait this. Schiphol has grown and wants to grow further, cities grow (towards Schiphol) and when you have a job close by, your friends and family live their and housing prices in Amsterdam are ridiculous high compared to other places where they are still high, due to shortage of houses. So it might not always be that easy to pick up your things and move.
And I also think it could help if houses would get double or triple glass and further proper isolation. Something the government has high on their list.
    Cheers, Rick

Japan has too many earthquakes, that's all... And about build it 12 km's into the sea is purely for the noise. Everybody thinks about ppl travelling, but Schiphol also does huge amounts of cargo-flights and airplane maintenance visible on any map of the area. The IJsselmeer, or rather the Markermeer they are naming wrong there is also largely a nature-reserve and on route of many many migrating birds. Connecting an off-shore airport to Amsterdam would be madness thou, the city is barely reachable during rush hour already and getting in (or out ) is horrid as we speak. p.s. Not only Amsterdam has a housing problem, it's a almost nationwide problem, and evil voices say the housing market likes it coz it keep house prizes higher then they are actually worth...

  • @obelic71
    @obelic71 Месяц назад

Why not build an airport in the Ijsselmeer?
Simple we already did it and its called Lelystad airport.
It was allowcated by politics to be upgraded and function as the major overflow airport for Schiphol.
This regional aerodrome was upgraded to a full modern airport so it could receive the most commen types of passenger aircraft.
Due to court rullings the permits to open and use of the airport was revoked and it became a white elephant airport. Only the original aerodrome flights permits are allowed to operate further.
So we have the absurd situation, were a non operational airport who operates as an aerodrome needs to be fully staffed due to international aviation laws and there is a serious shortage of staff at operational airports 🤦‍♂
Never underestimate politicians they are masters in FUBAR everything!

Living in De Randstad of The Netherlands; look at the map and draw a line between Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam: that's Randstad; the place in The Netherlands with the highest density of people of The Netherlands!) we always live more or less next to Schiphol or another local airport and so we will have to deal with the nasty consequences of Noise and Emission pollution. Over 60 Million passengers go through Schiphol airport every year, now how many take-offs and touch downs does it take for those 60 Million passengers to go through Schiphol airport? So the further away from where people live, the better it is and since The Netherlands is one of the highest dense countries cramped 18 Million people on such a small piece of land and the vast majority of all Dutch people live in the Randstad area so taking the entire Schiphol airport offshore as far away as possible from the mainland; the better it is.
And to answer 20kilovolt; there were cities all over De Randstad way sooner then the Schiphol airport was. So neither of us choose to go live next to an airport, we already lived here from generation to generation for ages and only 100 years ago; more or less, the green airfield was opened to the public after a few years being a military airfield. after WW2 the popularity grew exponentially in to a permanent air pollution (emission) and noise pollution problem it is now.

'rand' in randstad is een 'rand om het groene hart' en het plan is om de ruimte van die cirkel om het groene hart vol te bouwen totdat al die steden elkaar raken... tenminste, 35 jaar geleden was dat wat me verteld werd door de mensen die die plannen gemaakt hebben.

i heard that were not really making less money but that they were putting funds into other projects, reserving that money. and that this is why the amount at the bottom of the balance sheet is lower than it was a while ago.
it makes sense to me because it's not like the air traffic has dropped significantly, except ofcourse during the lockdowns.
do you know why it would be making a loss now? did taxes go up? maybe the co2 tax?

I love you, but I do not want a Schiphol in my backyard since the town I live in lies happily and above all; peacefully at the Ijsselmeer. Plus it's a nice recreational era and important for fishing and agriculture. I'm pretty sure all the other Ijsselmeer towns wouldn't want this either, so don't give those bureaucrats in Den-Haag any ideas🤗.

Dear Sir, it is very disadvantageous if you constantly pause to tell your thoughts while you do not yet know why, while the IJsselmeer is not suitable for it, it is namely the largest freshwater lake and therefore a drinking water supply. Then also the fact that Schiphol is not in Amsterdam but in Aalmeer. The 12 km from the coast is namely there so that it cannot be seen from the mainland, we do not want any more horizon pollution, the windmills do that too much.
