I'm an SKA (Shotokan Karate of America) karateka. The JKA and SKA styles are so different yet both originate from Gichin Funakoshi. We follow the Karate Do Kyohan book. It was translated by Shihan Ohshima Tsutomu of SKA from Master Funakoshi's teaching of the form. The most profound difference is in JKA and SKA is with the oizuki. I notice JKA move the hips first then the punch follows. In SKA we move both at the same time. Not to put JKA down but when we do Ippon and Sanbon kumite and Jiyu Ippon Kumite, I can easily tell when the punch is coming because the hips move first (telegraphing). Easy to defend and counterattack against.

Is point sparring an attempt by the JKA to compete with the popularity of Tae Kwon Do ? This rubbish would make Sokon Matsumura vomit. This is not Bushi Do. What has happened to Karate-Do is not an improvement. It is disgraceful. Real Karate has two goals. No more. Good luck keeping up with the Kardashian's.

What the? Point sparring tournaments in Shotokan started around Funakoshi's passing in 1957, but free sparring was practiced even before the war, when there was no such thing as TKD, and perhaps when the people who later became TKD masters were Shotokan white belts. And how do you know what Matsumura would do? We don't even know what his karate looked like.
