There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing.

I find myself watching Reagan speak fairly often. It's historically important and there is a nostalgia to it. This speech seems so reasonable and concerned with justice. The problem is that H.W. Bush pardoned everybody involved in this matter at the end of his term without any fallout from his camp.

It is humbling seeing such a charming president coming into your dreams saying, " Although you won't be at the top, but rest assured that you will succeed." He was a first-rate lay intellectual -- in other words, while not an academic, he had read enough and was good enough to have formed a solid common-sense American world-view that served him well even as he was aging. In other words, as he entered his late 70's, his instincts generally pointed him in the right direction. And so even when he screwed up, these same instincts told him how to make amends with the American people and regain their trust.

He was a well trained Hollywood actor who found his 'brand' in folksy 'cowboy hats' stories of good ole 'Murican individualism (while he began the crushing of the labor union movement) and mixed that with evangelical fervor, and the new Religious Right was born, too. He was also Gov. of California. He was a well practiced liar and the perfect 'doting folksy rube' for the cabal of Bush, Sr, Don Regan & Caspar Weinberger and Co.
