  • Would you still be a fan of Kevin De Bruyne, Kim Gevaert or Jean-Michel Saive if they had an intellectual disability? It’s a simple question to break the taboo around intellectual disabilities. Support Special Olympic athletes with the same enthusiasm as any sports hero; every great performance deserves a great audience. Come to the Special Olympics European Summer Games, from September 9-20th in Antwerp. www.so2014.com

    My brother usually takes part in the national SO games. He trains weekly and this year he was able to start practising again after a period of less activity due to a broken leg. When I go to cheer along the track I feel the good vibrations in every bone of my body. This is feel good sports competition. Everybody is a winner as far as I'm concerned.

    If they're good at what they do, and compete in the *real* olympics instead of the special olympics, and perform well, I don't doubt they'd have a bunch of fans.

    I think a lot of people are being really shallow in the comments. It's about giving them a chance and be a supporter for people that deserve as many attention as the rest of the world. It's a good initiative, and I always like good initiatives. It's not as much about you you you and your visual entertainment, as it is about them having a chance to do something that they are not able to do in a normal competition. This helps make some of their dreams come true and just for that, I'll gladly cheer them on!

    Don't get things mixed up. I watch sports (The Olympics, Grand Tournaments, etc.) to see the human boundary pushed to the limit, not to see beautiful or attractive people. I am not going to see that (pushing the boundaries) in the Special Olympics, just as I am not going to see that at the local gym.
    I am not trying to be an ass here. I do support ANYONE that is working out and for all of you to have fun in whatever it is you like doing, just like I do... but I am not an Olympic (neither significantly disabled) so I don't get ANY attention. Doesn't keep me from having great fun.

    As a former Special Olympics athlete of 28 years, including 20 of these years as a Powerlifter and representing Canada at the 1999, 2007, 2011, and 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, I can tell you from my experience that low spectator turnout levels at Special Olympics events are not just a Belgian problem.
    Unless you live in United States of America or China where their Special Olympics programs have high levels of government promotion and funding, the low spectator turnout levels at a Special Olympics club, regional, provincial, state, national, or continental levels are a worldwide problem.
    In fact, while Canada was one of the first nations to start a Special Olympics program, their spectator turnout levels at most club, regional, and provincial level events are low. Most of the onlookers are parents, family members, and friends of these inspiring athletes.
    Fortunately, these attitudes are changing in Canada due to Special Olympics Canada's recent promotional campaigns, including their popular "There Is No Special Treatment" campaign.
    Its unfortunate that sport doesn't care who you are or make judgements, but most of us still do, which is why I'm glad that Special Olympics Belgium produced this very powerful campaign.
    John "Jackie" Barrett
    Former Special Olympics "Team Canada" Powerlifter

    1 most atletes arent famous for their mental prowess or pretty faces
    2 football isn't only the most watched sport in most of europe it's also the most played
    people enjoy watching the best doing something they understand/feel connected to
    (the special olympics don't show the best of the best and if your legs wok fine you're not going to play much wheelchair basketball)

    Great video and indeed has some sort of truth in it.
    But isn't the media for a huge part to blame for these people not get the attention they deserve ?
    When Kevin De Bruyne or any other pro athlete did something like make a goal or w/e he got several articels, tweets, facebook comments, evening news, ...
    Give these people the same attention you give to other pro athletes and i am sure more people will automatically come and check them out.

      the thing is a disabled person doesn't score a sick goal like De Bruyne. and this is maybe not nice to say but the way disabled persons play is just not fun to watch in my opinion. if people whould enjoy it im sure the whould go but sadly almost nobody enjoys it.

    I've been waiting all my life for more than 5 people to show up watching my games, it's so UNFAIR! But seriously, if a handicapped is good at the game he or she should be able to compete with the "non-down" people, probably just at a lower level (as I do). If someone isn't, for whatever reason (too fat, too stupid, no fine motorics, down-syndrome, one leg), they should just enjoy their game playing it themselves, no need to fill stadiums for that.

    This video actually sickened me a little. Stop creating such a divide between people with disabilities and those who haven't. People pay to see the fastest runners in the world, the quickest swimmers in the world, etc. That's what the Olympics is about. So you can't expect millions of people to watch these athletes when they don't bring as much entertainment. Forcing people to watch through sympathy and guilt is a low-blow, at best.

      SociallyDemocratic tell us how much you've contributed to help them, before starting to talk. its not about you, its about achieving, about empowering, and also to remind us (atleast me) to always be grateful.

    • @onlyone23km
      @onlyone23km 6 лет назад

      They don't need to create shit, because the divide was already created without them! They're just putting it out in the open so that people in more fortunate situations can FIX IT!

    This made me think, having a mental disorder, physical problems, or missing a body part, directly gives you less attention when it comes to sport, just because you look different, or not so fast as the rest, not so good. I think they should get attention, just a little cheering.

    Many people watch sports to see people doing things they couldn't ever dreaming of ever achieving themselves , to see crazy skillful play. Yes , some like to see even amateur leagues and will watch any match. But not everyone watches for the same reasons. If someone with downs is doing the exact same things as the top players in a sport are doing , they would probably be as famous, possibly even more. This whole video feels completely pulled out of context, different people watch sports for different reasons. If someone can't provide you with the reason you watch it, you don't watch them. I'm terrible at soccer , I make bad decisions and have no ball control at all and am just naturally bad it. Would you come watch a match between me and my friends over top league games? Training hard =/= enjoyable to watch. There is a correlation but it isn't the only thing. This video only focuses on the effort put in , not on the other factors. This video is completely ignoring the fact they are just basically worse at the sports compared to top players , and is trying to pin it on their looks. They should definitely keep doing what they're doing and enjoy themselves, but let's not blame it on the looks.

  • @wolfura
    @wolfura 10 лет назад

    No we wouldn't. And someone with an intellectual disability cannot play at the same level so the question is redundant anyway. Nice try though but giving people guilty feelings doesn't work anymore unless there are puppies involved. The Spartans had a much better solution for this though.

    Disabled people in the Western world already get so much help, compassion,deeds and attention from society, they should be happy with that instead of asking for more, more and more...
    Is it nice and exciting for ''healthy'' people to watch Olympic Games with disabled people ?? No...

    • @HalifaxHercules
      @HalifaxHercules 6 лет назад

      When I competed for Canada at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, persons with disabilities in China other Eastern Bloc countries get the same help, compassion, and deeds, even much more.
      China's Special Olympics program is well promoted within their education system.
      In fact, during the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, roughly 1/2 the spectators were school children.

    People with down syndrome not giving a damn what anyone says to me is a better human then down syndrome humans begged to be loved.
    It's about your capability, not your personal issues.
