  • Monster effort by Moses Malone but not enough to win.
For Spurs George "the iceman "Gervin scored 32 points and Billy Paultz was the MVP with 24 points.

Paultz killed us in that game. One of the best trades R. Patterson ever made was when he shipped bench riding J. Shumate to the Spurs for Paultz in 1980. Paultz would eventually beat out Rudy T. for the starting 4 spot & was a major piece to the western conference championship puzzle in 1981 teaming up with Moses down low. Patterson also brought in veteran PG Thomas Henderson and also Bill Willoughby to replace the retiring Barry. That team jelled late in that season and almost won it all.

Rick Barry's last season as a starter. Amazing amount of scorers on Houston. Moses, Rudy T., Barry (my favorite), Murphy. Coach Nissalke didn't know what to do with all of this aging talent (exception: Moses). Not enough basketballs and not enough defense for Houston. Barry didn't know that John Lucas would be going to the Warriors as compensation for the Rockets' free agent signing of Barry. The Rockets underachieved that season. Those Spurs were fun to watch. "Mr. K" Kenon was a poor man's Dr. J. Love those ABA holdovers like Kenon, Gervin, Gale, "Captain Late" Silas, Dietrick, Mike Green and The Whopper.

A big game for the Whopper. Moses was a beast as always, funny how skinny he looked compared to his later years.
Cool watching Larry Kenon swooping in for breakaway dunks with that big afro wafting in the breeze. Growing up in Chicago I remember when he signed with the bulls for that big contract. Unfortunately, defensive minded Jerry Sloan was the coach back then. Special K picked the wrong team to sign with. It was the beginning of the end for his career.

Paultz looks like somebody at the Y that's 45 years old but schooling young bucks with the J. Slow, broke down looking, flabby but can simply hoop.

I loved both of these teams back then. Glad they won championships in the 90s and 2000s, but they should have had at least one in the 80s. George Gervin is one of my all-time favorites.
    Bring back these uniforms, too!

.I always loved those goals and backboard supports they had in San Antonio back at this time, that were the only one of their kind in the NBA. Those goals were made for scoring!

I have this entire game on DVD somewhere. But this is the running Spurs at their best. This is also a good example of the intensity of Moses Malone. He is quicker than every other big guy here and just goes after the ball as if his life depended on it.
The other thing I remember about this game was how Rick Barry looked about 2 steps behind everyone else like he had stayed in the league one year too long and it showed in this game.

I know Larry Kenon leaving increased George’s scoring but I think it took away the Spurs ABA chemistry. I wished it would have worked out.

I hope ESPN does a 30 for 30 on this Spurs team from that year. Very compelling story. No draft picks, yet get to the Eastern Conference Finals.

There was one at SA where the Rockets won by Moses making 2 free throws at the end, this same season. People started throwing food and stuff on the court. btw do you have that or one at Houston (vs any oponent) pre-1979-80 season? thx

WTF is Paultz MVP for? Did he get a lot of boards? Ice had 32 and shot a good percentage...Hahaha, I guess when 30 to 40 a night is the norm and a guy averaging 15 a game gets 24 it looks better....

It looks like there’s a very thin and faded out 3 point line, especially in the corners. But this was before the NBA added 3 pointers so I’m confused
