I literally got gossbumps when i first listen to this performance
glad you found this band and immediately recognized the class of guitarist machiya. glad you liked the music too. they are awesome and special.
Some very talented musicians in this band. Great song and reaction 👍🏻
The Japanese rock scene is off the charts. The merging of the old world and new world is so Japanese. My hometown in Okinawa used to be a villiage...now it's a resort area. Things change but Japan manages to hold on to its roots.
waggaki is always awesome ! béni and yuko are beautiful
Definitely Jean 😁👌
Love your reaction to them. I've been listening to them for a couple of years. Definitely a unique sound and I love them.
Oh different and brilliant for sure mate!!
Great reaction as usual. Wagakki means instrument in Japanese referring to the traditional Japanese instruments. They mix modern with traditional. They are an amazing group of musical people. I enjoy their music very much. Check out their cover of "Bring me to Life" which they did with Amy Lee.
I can't believe I just discovered this insane band! Best ever RUclips music find by long shot!
Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee joined WagakkiBand as a special guest during their "Premium Symphonic Night" concert at Osaka-Jo Hall.
Ohhh I'll have to check their Collab out
The mask is from Kubuki Theatre, it has 2 expressions in one mask, when the mask is looking up it's angry, looking for down it's smiling.
Noh Theatre.
Kabuki uses makeup.

Every member of WagakkiBand is a master-level pro at their instruments. It's usually marked as "folk metal" because it involves traditional instruments. Actually, Wagakki Band means "traditional Japanese instrument band". The two drum sets are Wasabi on "normal" drums (well named for his spicy playing!) and Kurona on the traditional taiko (wadaiko) drums. The wadaiko provides extra oomph and off-beat sounds that aren't possible with just one drummer or a normal band drumset. There are whole competitions in Japan built around the traditional drumming techniques on all different sizes, including ones that are about three times as tall as you! Fun fact: Beni's showy tsugaru shamisen can only be played on the downstroke with her weighted plectrum (large fanlike pick) and the silk strings change pitch rapidly with changes in humidity, and it has no frets, so she has to play everything by ear and muscle memory! The costumes are themed around a colour scheme or style, but always personalized. Machiya on guitar rarely wears shoes, for example, and wears his traditional Noh mask for the songs he wrote before he was with WagakkiBand like Homura. Asa on bass likes looking androgynous. Wasabi's not a fan of constrictive clothing because of his constant arm movements. Kaminaga Daisuke on the shakuhachi flute likes looking like a monk, with his bald head, so he prefers to wear more traditional robes. Suzuhana Yuko, the vocalist is a licensed Shigin (poetic recitation) performer and teacher, and can do sword and fan dances. She's almost always dressed like an anime princess in some way. It's a great look for her! As for the flat harp thing, that's a koto (long vowels, "koe-toe") played by Kiyoshi Ibukuro with golden fingers, lol. The lyrics are as follows:
Hana hirakeba chou eda ni mitsu | Flower bloom filling the butterfly branches
Warera utau sora no kanata he | To the sky that we sing
Haruka nagaru kumo no mukou he | Beyond the faraway clouds
Umi wo koete niji wo watatte | Cross the sea and cross the rainbow
Kimi ni todoku you ni | Like to reach you
Seki wo kitte afureru omoi | Thought to overflow the weir [a low type of dam meant to raise a river or catch fish]
Itsuka sameru yume no ibashou de | In the whereabouts of a dream, that will someday
Warai atte irareru you ni | Just like being laughing [as in the state of being that you feel when you're laughing]
Kasane tsumuide yuku | I am going to spin it
((Repeat from "Warera utau"))
The lyrics for "Akatsuki no Ito" (second part of the live, when the flute/shakuhachi and koto enters) transliterated into English goes as follows...
"Flowers bloom, butterfly fills the branches.
And we offer this song to those skies
One faraway beyond the clouds
Across the sea and past the rainbow
To reach you.
Overflowing thoughts, breaks the weir
In that place of dreams we shall wake from someday
So that you may laugh
And I'll spin our tale together."
A great reaction to an awesome band! SEIDR beat me to the punch in requesting this, haha! Yes, the traditional Japanese kabuki theater mask is an awesome touch! This is grown up Japanese rock. "Wagakki" means "traditional instruments", so they are a blend of traditional Japanese instruments with modern western instruments. The lead guitarist is outstanding, and the singer, Yuko Suzahana, can sing in both traditional Japanese style (shigin) (of which she is a master) and western style well. Yuko is one of those amazing people in the world. She started training on piano at the age of 3, and has worked as a lecturer in a piano class, and is expert in traditional swords and a particular style of Asian poetry, which she has a degree in. She started the band and recruited all of its members, and she is the primary songwriter as well. She is even the host of her own TV show in Japan!
Hi,Mike
It's not Kabuki mask, but Noh mask.

@@fumin8 , thanks! :)
Yes, fecking incredible. And ... don't apologise, it's not swearing. BTW, love your accent, it's more in tune with my native German and reminds me of my friends in Scotland, that I'm missing in these trying times.

Oh and btw, if you should look for Japanese stuff to react, please check out "Broken By The Scream - Sayonara Birthday", "Passcode - Anything New" or "Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas - Crossover".
They did a song with Amy Lee called Sakura Rising which is worth checking out. There's also the best version of Bring Me To Life with Wagakki Band and Amy. The traditional Japanese instruments add so much to the song and bring new life to it (pun not intended)
All very true, Violet, and I am planning on requesting both of those anyway coming up! 😊 I love your cool name!
O!M!G! So impressed with this band!!!! I gotta go back to Prince for impressed!
Wagakki Band(wa-gakki)means a Japanese musical instrument.
Really like these guys. Always sooo much going on.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 They also do a couple of great songs with Amy Lee.
Wagakki basically means traditional instruments in Japanese.
Keep going with these guys 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That’s a really good one with Amy Lee 💞💞💞
@@lizziev4510 Sure is. That's the one that got me hooked on them.
Correct as always, Basil!! 😎👍 Check out their animated collaboration with Amy Lee which really great also!
@@mikeg.4211 Yes That one is is really good. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Sakura Rising
Beni's solo reaction never gets old!
The guitar looking thing the girl played is called a shamisen the horizontal harp like thing is called a koto
J-everything is about right lol. Wa-gakki translates to Japanese musical instrument(s)
ありがとー😉👍🎶、他のWGBの曲もお願いいたします。
It might be a NOH mask or a KABUKI mask but pretty sure not a Geisha mask? Everything else you got spot on. Thanks for the excellent Reaction and it is not sexist to say Beni the shamisen player is gorgeous.
Noh. Kabuki doesn't use mask, only make-up.
@@utakuryukko2023 thanks.
I found by chance Beni Ninagawa who plays the Shamisen in 2013 cause she did a cover of the opening song of Evangelion and she stopped posting videos on RUclips for a while. Later on, I found out that she had joined Wagakki Band and I have been a fan of the band ever since. Rumour has it that during a band rehearsal Beni came in with her Shamisen and told them I am going to play with you tonight and she did. Would not surprise me if that was the real story when you see how she was back then. She is crazy talented.
I dii ok know that she did approach the band as the V last member to be added. The only difference is that in the version I heard, they were at a restaurant and she was at the bar and saw them and approached Yuko about it. 😎👍🤟
@@mikeg.4211 Like I said, it is a widely circulated rumour and it would fit her attitude of: I know what I am capable of so you better take me seriously which I strongly agree with
@@repobob autocorrect on my phone messed up my message a bit (I meant to say “I do know” at the beginning); but yes, I totally agree with your point; whichever version of the story is correct, it’s the same basic idea! 👍🤟
It's not a rumor. But she approached Hanafugetsu - the band Yuko (vo), Daisuke (shakuhachi) and Kiyoshi (koto) had before creating Wagakki band. I think Hanafugetsu had an event and she talked to them afterwards. Before officially forming the band with these members, they recorded a cover with another shamisen and bass player. In the meantime a wild Beni appeared and there you go. :P
You definitely need to check out more from them.
Howling, Ignite, Tomodachi ninaruyo, Sun wheel, Sabaku no komoriuta, Tori no youni. It's safe to use the official music videos uploaded after 2019.
Great reaction and yes, they are very talented and the mixing of traditional instruments with modern instruments creates a unique sound. I would suspect that Japanese watching a traditional Irish band would be just as confused as you are (Uilleann pipes).
Fair point glen lol
"Hey guys I joined a metal band!"
"Cool what instrument?"
"Flute."
Haha facts mate 😁👌
ありがとう😊
Thank you!!!
What comes to mind is J-Folk Metal.
That sounds about right lol
No one can rock the shamisen like Beni
Wagakki Band is always fantastic. try "hakanaku mo utsukushii no wa"
and you have a new favorite. Link with English subtitles.

The one thing that you didn't mention that contributes to the quality of this performance is the sound engineering. You can clearly hear all of the instruments and voices if you tune your ears to them while the lead instrument/vocal always has the lead. There's nothing muddy or overpowering the total experience in the entire mix.
Don't You know this genre? It's japanese folk metal, dude.
Haha I do now!!
That's not even a geisha mask... Lel..
Noh mask*
