I just chalk painted a table/chairs and little tables and was torn wax and poly. The wax just rubbed some paint off 😢 it didn’t do that with my other table. Brushing poly on seems to be eating it also. How long did you wait before poly and did you sand between coats
What a nice finished vanity!! I'm surprised you don't like the mirror, though. I find with any furniture, the only way to really protect the top is to have a nice piece of glass cut to fit the surface. It's expensive on a piece like the vanity because of the curves. But it looks really nice, it's easier to clean and it protects the surface. I had some cut for the last two pieces I spray painted so they would not get damaged on the top. I'm pretty careful with my things, and even so, the items without glass will show more wear and tear than those with. Especially if there are any plants. Plants make such a mess of a surface unless you are super, super careful about watering. Nice job and I loved the way you added the instagram feed at the end. You have to show me how to do that!
Pattymac Knits thanks patty! Polycrilic is pretty dang tough! If you do a few coats it can be as protective as glass without the shine. I’d say the glass is out of style but I saw a lot at west elm this past weekend. And the mirror was just too young looking. Reminded me of Alice in wonderland! I’ll find another mirror for it and hopefully someone will use and love the old one.

I want my furniture....even the cheap stuff to last longer and be easier to clean. It's much easier to get up the dust from glass. My office organizer and cabinet was very expensive, so I wouldn't paint it. I put glass on it immediately to protect the top. My cheap vanity has glass and it will let me get up makeup easily. The glass cost more than the piece, but I think it looks expensive with the glass top and Anthropologie knobs. Only I know it was $25 at Target a decade ago. I'm at the age where I don't care anymore about having a house that's "in style." I just want it to be comfortable and have the things I invest in last longer and be easier to clean. My house is a dust factory, so ease of cleaning is way more important to me than just about anything. That was the whole impetus behind the decluttering and clearing out process. I need to be able to do my house cleaning in a more efficient manner. I've used poly on projects in the past, and while it's good, it's not glass. I'm sure it's a different taste preference. I'd love to refinish our midcentury tea cart and I would have glass cut for the top as the first thing. It has plants on it now and even though I'm careful, I still spill water. I have a question I use the chalk paint and I also put wax on top of the chalk paint but I’m not very happy with the outcome do you know if I could put the lacquer on top of the wax or do I have to take the wax off thank you

I am trying this technique for removing the lint left behind by my "lint-free" cloth. I assume(?) if remove some or all of the wax the lint will come up with it and I can rewax it and resume my project. Any tips?

There is something you can do about the locks. Those are usually from cuts of the same type of 🗝️, take a drawer to your local locksmith and they will test and provide a key to fit.
I'm thinking about repainting my dining room table and chairs with A.S. chalk paint, my question is do you recommend using polycrilic protective finish on something like that or soft wax instead? thanks in advance
Would you still need to use the mineral spirits to remove the wax if you plan on sanding the paint off after? Or can you just sand.. and skip using the mineral spirits?
I love that table, so cute. I'm like you, I don't enjoy using my chalk paint brush. I've have trouble using Polycrylic on my pieces. My chalk paint will look smooth and perfect, but then when i add Polycrylic, it looks uneven with lines and streaks. I can never get a smooth look. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
I added wax to my final piece but it left a white/chalky residue- i can’t work out if it was due to adding too much wax or just a bad brand of wax. I have buffed it over and over to no avail. If I remove it from the piece, would it ruin the paint work underneath ? I would hate to have to repaint the whole piece 🙈
Was it Annie Sloan brand wax? It shouldn't have done that if it was clear, Annie Sloan. Other brands I can't speak on. I would try to remove it with mineral spirits, maybe lightly sand and then you'll only have to do one coat of paint to fix it.

It doesn’t sound like it was done well to begin with. Wax when properly applied shouldn’t be sticky. Also, it could be the brand of chalk paint that was used. Could be that they didn’t clean it well before they painted it. It’s a number of possibilities. Best thing would be to remove what you can with mineral spirits and lightly sand it.

1955dmb it certainly wouldn’t hurt! I’m not sure if citristripping gel would work as I’ve only used it on latex paint, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t. Spindles are the worst! Lol but it sounds like the hard work will be worth it. Some projects I feel I’ll never get through and they’re the ones I’m most proud of in the end!
@@MeganBell We thought we would add the citristrip gel to the mix. Slap some of that on and let it sit for a bit, then saturate some steel wool with the mineral spirits and try to scrub it off. The paint job was a disaster. The chairs are Windsor chairs......of course they are. What chair would have the most spindles and yet need to be refinished? But you are so right. I think it will be worth it in the end. They are actually very nice chairs so we are going to give it a try. Thanks for your advice!!
How do you know that all of the wax is gone after the mineral spirits? I rubbed my dresser with mineral spirits twice now but I still feel like the surface is smooth (as if the wax is still there)....
Other than sanding, are there other options for completely removing chalk paint? Black chalk paint over mahagony :( Antique stores often have handfulls of old skeleton keys....you might find a replacement.
Dni KL thanks for the tip on the keys! I’ll have to check around! As far as completely removing chalk paint I would say sanding is the best route. Gel strippers usually work better with latex paint and then again you still have to go back and sand. Good luck!
hi! So i painted a small vanity, a dresser, and two night stands in vintage white and sealed them once with soft wax. This was almost 2 and a half years ago. I hate the wax and my furniture is always dirty because of it. i want to take the wax off, touch up a few spots and then seal with poly acrylic. 1) would i just go in with the mineral spirts and then do what i want? 2) is there a way to tell if you’ve gotten all the way off? Thanks so much!
Alaina Maracotta if you only did one coat of wax, the mineral spirits should do the trick. I had to rub a little extra elbow grease into a few spots where the wax was heavier. The way you can tell the wax is off is by “feel” and if you’re unsure you could always take a light sandpapering to it. I had no issues with my vanity but you definitely want to make sure the wax residue is completely gone before using any other sealant on your furniture. Good luck!
I totally forgot to sand before waxing... My buffet is rough even with to coats of clear wax. Can I take off the wax and then sand? Omg! I'm so new at this chalk painting so many steps. Lol What happened to distressing furniture with paint?
Mineral spirits did not remove stain. We wiped it down all over.I am either going to have to primer, then chalk, or try a test spot with chalk and see if it stays.
Did not work for me. Used waverly chalk paint in white on a rocking horse and then I used white wax over it which gave it a yellow tinge. Wanted to remove it and replace it with clear wax. Scrubbed and scrubbed for nearly an hour with the mineral spirits just as she showed in the video. Did not come off. Still yellow and waxy. Bummer. Planning to sand and repaint which I should have just done in the first place.

That mirror did not go with the piece, that's why it is unliked. It's not just your hands that suffer, your organs can become contaminated due to absorption as well.

Hey April! I would try to remove as much of the wax as possible with mineral spirits before you lacquer it.

I thought wax dried hard and my books just pull all the wax. No one online but you has been helpful. # wax never again!!
Kay Huddleston I use it on pieces that won’t get a ton of wear and tear because I do love the look Of it!
I’m with you, I regret using wax. now I have to remove it and redo the piece because it just looks dirty.
I think I sanded too vigorously then waxed it hoping it would work. It looks horrible can I use this product on my fabric chair?

So to make sure I understand, would you remove the wax with the spirits and then sand to remove the paint underneath the wax?
If you are removing the paint as well, simply sanding is the right choice.

Mel Mill I prefer the Annie Sloan laquer for sure! I used the polycrilic for this projects but my heart still lies with Annie Sloan.

Just sand away! You would only want to use mineral spirits if you were just trying to remove the wax and not the paint.

That paper in your drawer would come out easy if you spray ammonia in the drawer in too of the paper also works good on wall paper removal

Lauren Sauls mineral spirits does the job for me but if you’re still feeling some Wax build up, you can lightly sand in those areas. Good luck!

Mineral spirits will also dissolve the glue nearly every time .

I hate to see a nice piece of wood furniture destroyed with chalk paint. lots of good peices have been trashed and lose any value they once had.
