Great review, Dan, but I will disaagre with you on that the romance wasn't crucial to the plot of this movie, I think it's very much needed. it's because Penny tells Maverick about how she fixed her relationship with her daughter by not being overprotective anymore, by trusting her and letting her have her freedom, it's this what makes Maverick realise that he needs to stop being overprotective towards Rooster and what makes him take Rooster to the final mission. And because of that they can finally reach understanding, reconcilliation and mutual respect during the climax of the movie. And that's because of Penny and her romantic storyline with Maverick. That's why I find it crucial to the plot.

Great movie and agree with all your points. My only gripe with the movie was the lack of soundtrack. Given the first used music so iconically, this one almost forgot the need to involve music in its key scenes. I feel like they wanted the shots and emotion to speak for itself but i really missed that level up that occurs with a strong building soundtrack.

    • @SupplementEngineer
      @SupplementEngineer 2 года назад +1

Overall, I thought the soundtrack was solid (even being a HUGE fan of the original soundtrack). At times, the Hans Zimmer influence is too much (the original TOP GUN Anthem does NOT need the giant wall of sound that's quintessential of Hans Zimmer to be impactful. It was perfect in its inception.). Additionally, I really did not enjoy the two songs of Lady Gaga (beach scene and love theme). She may be talented, but the two songs in the movie just don't deliver the right tone/impact for my tastes. If she had some contract in her vocal performance of the two songs that might be better, but it comes across (to me) as simply shouting.

In addition to the perfectly balanced narrative, inspiring visuals and superb soundtrack, Maverick also has another important aspect: he brings up a feeling that has been missing in theaters for a long time, that feeling of ''Real Cinema'' made the old-fashioned way, with few effects. The roar of the jet engines is real, the reactions of the Pilots is real, the Story for more fanciful is believable, the Emotions that surround the Characters are perfectly capable of being felt by us too (at some point in our lives, or even during the exhibition), of course not in an extraodinary context of the Navy but still are true emotions and feelings, I'm clapping because all this joins nostalgia, watching this Movie is an Experience.

He was not mad at Maverick for the death of his father but for pulling him out of the training and set him back several years. I too at first thought it was death of his father and to some extent it was, but I believe the writers were confused between these two reasons to set the story twist between their relationship.

The Aerial Combat is done so much better than the original movie, you literally cannot tell what was real and what was done in CG. You can tell the actors are experiencing real G force in many of the scenes since they are actually in the F-18. The action scenes are badass and worth seeing the film just for that. When F18 is shown as the background of Top Gun Maverick, I was disappointed for not able to see the latest gen of jet fighter.
I was wrong, in fact older gen aircraft require more control from human, which made this movie the gem for 2020s.
Tom Cruise as Maverick, character flaw never fail to enhance the story.
When Maverick deliver an awe during 3/4 of the show, I wasn't expecting any better climax than this. Yet I was wrong again.
Character development beside Maverick is lacking. This in fact help not making it draggy.
Lots of nostalgia vibes including songs from old Top Gun, but it blends in well with the story.
The highlight of the film is the immersive airborne sequence . Dogfights filled with element of surprise.
This is how a movie sequel should be made. Bringing back memories and never fail to awe its audiences with handicapped against technology advancement.

I took Friday off for Kenobi. I’ll undoubtedly wake up at 3am to watch it so I just might go see a matinee

The final mission scene was pretty exhilarating - definitely edge of your seat action. The only thing that could’ve been the cherry on top to this movie was to forget the lady Gaga song and just stamp the take my breath away at the outro/end scenes…would’ve been epic

Thanks for rewiev. Didn't realize how much hype this movie have, glad it's good. Cinemas begin to open in my city, but i still can't be normal and just go see a movie like it was before war. P. S. Just a comment from a subscriber from Ukraine. I think it's first time for past 3 months i got time and mood to tune to your channel. And now after watching i begin to miss screenjunkies and movie trivia show, like it was in another life.... Sorry, on a good note, another thanks for your rewievs.

Awesome review Dan! Though I believe the Minions sequel is actually the last delayed 2020 major studio release that still has to come out

What I don't get about the BOB character is I thought that Naval Aviators had to have 20/20 vision, how was he able to qualify while wearing glasses? Was it because he wasn't the pilot?

Hi Dan, big fan of your work! How do promotions where restaurants give out movie tickets with purchases play into overall box office numbers? Applebee's is currently running one with this film. Are they accounted for all at once for opening weekend? Or individually, in real time, at time of meal purchase and adds week to week? Maybe should have asked this on a Charts video...

With the nostalgia factor, IF this movie turns out to also be really good, I think could overtake the MCU to be the #1 or 2 movie of the summer. Tom Cruise is one of the few stars left who can bring people to theaters. He has loyal followers from older movies that were foundational for many of us, plus has gained fans from the Impossible Mission films. Top Gun wasn’t one of my favorite movies or anything, but I did really like the Goose character and am interested to see what became of his son. I’m glad it sounds like they were respectful of the OG characters instead of going the route of some other reboots. Then again, Cruise would NEVER have accepted anything like that for a character he’s going to play! 😂

I watched the original Top Gun prior to the new one.
I got to say, I like the new one better.
Maybe it is just filmography have evolved over time, but the first one have some weird pacing issues.

I have vague reasons that would bias me to dislike somebody like Tom Cruise - but I can't help but like him, he's a fantastic actor and seems kind enough - "Interview with the vampire" will always stick in my mind thanks to his performance! I hope Maverick does well, it does seem like they're genuinely trying to do something clever rather than just 'explain the gap'

I actively dislike Tom Cruise’s persona but you can’t fault his commercial judgements overall. MI Fallout was a masterclass in action cinema and I’m sure TG M will be a huge hit.
