just a little thing i'll point out. you mentioned he was injured by a grenade but grenades weren't invented until ~20 years after the american civil war. maybe instead you could say he was injured by a cannon that shot explosive shells. (i'm no expert i just quickly googled that, idk if it actually matters to you if there's anachronistic stuff in your story, if not that's okay! it's your story!!!) great content, i'm glad you popped up in my recommended:)
