Aboard the Western Flyer, Stanford students study science and literature

Join Stanford undergraduates aboard the Western Flyer, the same fishing vessel that novelist John Steinbeck chartered to the Sea of Cortez in 1940. Students studied oceanography, ecology, and literature out on Monterey Bay as part of the 2024 Sophomore College course Oceans 10SC. Taught by Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability professors William Gilly and Christopher Francis, the three-week course immersed students in the science and stories of the sea.
