    a cut away from a 1998 bmw 323iS with a windowed ZF310 trans and m20 single mass flywheel.
    the transmission used to be in an M3 track car, the release bearing failed, overheated and friction welded itself on to the transmission input shaft guide tube. the windows were cut in to the bellhousing in non structural areas and it was installed with a new guide tube on a 1998 323iS to see what would happen. Input shaft bearings were very worn in this ZF, hence the wobblier than average release bearing here.

    One reason to avoid developing the habit of sitting at stoplights with the clutch depressed for minutes every time you stop. The pressure plate puts side-force on the engine crankshaft, the throw-out bearing on the clutch is constantly turning, lots of stuff wears more quickly. Best to pop the transmission into neutral while sitting stationary for any length of time, and release the clutch. Develop the habit early and a manual will last much longer over the years.

    • @DR-JOHN-DEJAVU-1984
      @DR-JOHN-DEJAVU-1984 2 года назад +455

      Also, don't fall into the idea that while moving on the road in a flat area or in areas where you don't need to use the throttle by switching to neutral will save fuel. It doesn't, it's only best if you know you're coming to a stop or going downhill using momentum.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 2 года назад +489

      Deceleration with a manual in modern fuel injected vehicles will ensure the fuel injection system will shut off, thereby using zero fuel when rolling down a hill or using engine braking to come to an eventual stop. So long as your foot is off the accelerator and the car is decelerating, the injection is shut off.

    • @DacLMK

      I'm trying my best, but I can't help it but holding down on the clutch pedal, usually when I'm in either 1st or 2nd gear because I fear that the car will turn off when moving at slow speeds. My father constantly yells at me for that.

      Instant mpg display on my 2015 goes right up to 99 mpg and stays there with the car engine-braking from speed or down a hill. In other words, infinite miles per gallon when the fuel injectors are shut off (per EPA requirements in fuel injected engines in vehicles) and the car is rolling by momentum.

      I once was working on my 150cc scooter engine which has a metal cvt fan attached to the crankshaft. In layman's terms, imagine a big exposed saw blade that spins at whatever speed the engine is going. On those smaller engines, idling speed is about 4K RPM which means the saw blade is going about as fast as the clutch in the video when he applies throttle.
      So I have the saw blade thing exposed because I'm doing work to the transmission. I fire it up and see the saw blade spinning super fast. I had the intrusive thought to stick my finger in it and... I did. I gently brought the tip of my finger to the edge of the spinning metal disk. Everything was over in an instant. I felt an extreme sharp stabbing pain as the fan grabbed a hold of my finger, chewed it up and spat it out. THANKFULLY the finger did not get forced backwards because of the way I touched it and instead it just shattered my fingernail. It bled and swelled up but that was about it. Now I have a gutteral fear over exposed CVT fans and my urge to touch those spinning things is gone

    My Beetle in the '70... The very first clutch disk didn't had the helicoidal springs to dampen clutch engagement.
    The clutch was driven by a tiny steel wire, which had the habit to break the last weekend of the month - never during the work week.
    The disk was high quality but was undersized, especially when you always had four passengers, and drove over steep inclines. The surface of the disk was like soap at the touch... it was high quality asbestos, just like the brake pads. We didn't know yet, at the time, of the damages to the body the material was capable of. Just like the lead in the petrol.
    Thank you for this slightly crazy video, it took me to a moment of my life when I was able to change from a mechanics overall clothing to a black tie evening dress in less than half hour.

    My Vauxhall Nova had an inspection panel in the bellhousing, which was big enough to allow you to remove the clutch and replace it without having to unbolt the gearbox. Turned an hours-long major job into a 30-min minor repair. I never understood why more manufacturers didn't do this.
