I made this video on a whim a year ago, kinda surprised it's sitting at over 100,000 views.
I might remake it at some point since the gunfire sfx isn't very exciting.

Imagine being a combine soldier guarding some random beach when in the distance the ant-lion towers start being disabled, apprehension and evasion starts quiet but slowly gets louder, overwatch starts freaking out, alarms turns on, some goofy scientist wearing bright orange surrounded by ant-lions rushes your position, you try to call for backup but its too late, the scientist is at your bunker entrance staring at you, he tosses an alien ball at you and ant-lions start eating you as the man backhops away.

Not to mention the orange nerd hopping straight at you at the speed of light
You know...I can imagine how scared I would be on the inside.
But by that same token, imagine how proud I would be of myself to be throwing myself into the face of certain death at the hands of an anticitizen-led biotic outbreak, even knowing full well that any fear, Hell, ANY cognitive dissonance I have WHATSOEVER, is constantly kept purged by regular firmware and wetware updates downloaded to me from the Combine Overnet, the same updates that flush out my less useful memories, and not only am I left with the best training in professional soldiering that an intergalactic army can shove into a man's head, but that even when sending out a panicked final transmission, the vocoder jammed all the way through my neck leaves me sounding every bit as calm, collected and cool-as-a-cucumber as a veteran fighter pilot turned commercial airline pilot giving his passengers the "this is your captain" speech.

@@A1rWaxta The OTA units still feel emotions, they're just very serious about their position and brainwashed to be undyingly loyal to the combine. They still feel emotions like fear. For example they scream and swear when you throw a grenade at the snipers through the window.

The song *is* meant to play alongside gameplay, so it makes sense that it'd be better that way.
this entire section feels so unbelievably cool, and then finally breaching nova prospekt and seeing the antlions flying over the walls
I love how once you're actually in the building, the ambience track is combine deaths meaning in other places the combine are being swamped by antlions
Combines would be as scared as hearing a boss battle theme when a completely usual and normal ambient theme starts to play as gordon steps into the map

I think we forget how much the HEV suit carries. it the thing that allowed Gordon do to such things, without it he would die in like 4 hits from a pistol and with it he can tank a AR2 alt fire wich basicly evaporates all lving tissue it hits.
If you change your viewmodel FOV you will find Gordon holds an AR2 one handed

This reminds me of D Day that the prison guards are the germans defending Omaha Beach and then gordon freeman arrives as an US captain and he orders his antlion soldiers to rush up the beach
