Honestly, it baffles me how you don't have more followers/ viewers. You're one of the best, if not the best whisk(e)y/ spirit channel in my opinion, in terms of video quality, quality control, style, information, etc. The list goes on. Really good videos. Keep it up, and thanks for the content.
Return of the preview intro! Love it! But Jules, this scoring system makes no sense. A fundamental requirement of rating scales is that every rating is a valid choice. There's an inherent paradox in "leaving room for improvement" here - were it to improve, you'd still say you're leaving room for improvement! If something is perfect, you can't think of anything better, and you can't find any flaws, then it's a 10/10, sorry! Appreciate the discussion as always
Awesome vid! I’ve lived in Japan for awhile and was lucky to get one for $500. But even here now a days it’s pushing the $700-$800 prices. Still very very good but that 17 year is so so close to it…if we could vote. I’d love to see that head to head. 17 Vs 21 Hibiki would be amazing. Or the glendronach 🤔🤔
Hibiki 30 will blow up your minds!! Nice video! I still remember buying it at $220 a bottle in Japan just couple years back. Still have few bottles left.
I usually only drink bourbon, but now I HAVE to seek out a pour of this! To some member of your panel, "You can't say perfect 11 times and give it a 9!" Therefore, you lose a member of the panel. Change the name of your channel, again, and call it Whiskey Curiosity! Cheers boys. Love the content.
Had to pause at 2:35 because as I look up this bottle today I can NOT find it cheaper than $1,500 a bottle. Looking forward to this review of a whiskey that I'll never try!
Generally I find it funny when Jules frustrates Dillon / Dutch. In this case I actually was getting mad at Jules… I think this is just a reflection of how the scoring continues to be subjective. Great review. Buddy of mine sent me a sample, I’ll need to go back and visit this. If I ever had the opportunity to buy at 400, no brainer. Any idea on if pricing / availability is different in Japan?
Oh, and for your members only comparison. Didn’t you guys do one of the premium Johnnie walker versions? I think comparing it to a 3-400 version of Johnnie would be a great comparison. High end blend scotch vs Japanese version. Or if you had a premium release of compass box (this is not a luxury whiskey)…
So I have to say Jules is trying to compare each category to every whiskey that was ever made. It seems it should be more of a score that addresses the category. Did the whiskey address the category perfectly?
love your guys stuff! have you tried the hibiki 100th year anniversary blend? exclusive to japan bars and hotels. would love to hear your thoughts on that dram and where it stands amongst 17 and 21
I think there's a misunderstanding for "value." I think a lot of people associate "value" with "budget." Two completely different things. Value should be seen as "is it worth the money?" Budget should be seen as "is it cheap/affordable?" Great video guys, love the back & forth. Nothing wrong with anyone's scores. Taste is subjective! Jules, you do you bro!
Really impassioned show fellas! Good stuff! If this 21 has materially appreciated in price then Jules was right all along.... on value at least.... and Dillon needs to go to confession.😉
So far I've only had the normal Hibiki Harmony and the Master's Select. I would love to try the Hibiki 21 but it is too expensive here in Germany cheapest offer 880$. great review as always because of you guys I will buy my first proper Tequila (Fortaleza) next. Luckily I found a dealer who sells it over here. and here is a recommendation on my part, but I don't know if you can get it: Michel Couvreur Overaged Malt Whisky Cask Strength 52%
Correct!!.....if you give it a 9/10....Hibiki will keep trying 👍🏻😎.....and that's what everyone wants 😊..... Hibiki 21 currently @ $2,000 Australian dollars 😯...July 2021.
Came for the Whiskey review....stayed for the movie references lol. I'm new to the channel but I love the discussions. FYI I love all Kurosawa/Mifune classics. I'm more partial to Yojimbo, Sanjuro & 7 samurai.
Jules is just wrong and clearly doesn't understand scoring. Things can be perfect and be different to each other, and one thing being perfect doesn't prevent others. It's not a zero sum game. Second, the scoring you're doing is intrinsically subjective. Even though the idea is to compare bottles in the long run, you're not comparing bottles when you score - you're scoring each experience against your own expectations and hopes. If you say something is "perfect" and then don't score that way, you're actually just failing scoring. The contrarianism is entertaining, generally, but the "logic" is stupid. Jules is entitled to the former as his thing, just not to claim it's somehow smarter. It's not being a truth broker - it's just avoiding making a commitment to a view.
3 thoughts (sorry): #1 RE: the finish, I haven't tried this but I have tried the 17 year and noted the peat returns during the finish, as the other flavors gradually trail away. Its almost like an MCU after the credits scene instead a of the slow fade out to the credits you are expecting. #2, its amazing how impassioned you guys are over the difference between a 9 and a 10. And a testament to your the quality of your show. #3 I suggest a new rule. Every review that Jules scores more than 3 9's, he has to take a peach whiskey shot.
I think with your whole-number multiple categories system it is absolutely reasonable to give a 10/10 as a perfect score. If you were using decimals and just rating the dram 1-10 (no categories, just one score) nothing should get a 10.. that would imply that it is impossible that anything could be better (think figure skating or the barstool guy that does pizza reviews)
Jules there is such a thing as perfect when you have things to compare that are subjective. If you can't acknowledge that within the group, then you skew the scoring system. Otherwise no one can score a 10 and you have to score on a curve.
Great video guys. Agree with Dillon on everything but value, the juice is minimum 21 years old, Suntory needs to make a margin for something that took forever to produce. Respect Jules, but he has to understand there is a possibility that nothing could be better in the future, so the present can be the best ever garnishing a score of 10.
Both the 21 and 30 are in my mind and taste the best whiskeys I have tasted and what lead me to it was the Yamazaki. If you go drinking in Japan for business then you will get positive outcomes if you get a round of these for the table.
The intensity of this review was awesome! Unfortunately this stuff is 🦄 tears. Luckily a 9 = perfect, unobtanium = value, and this juice is diamond worthy all day long baby...sign me up!
Jules, bro. What you doing. If you were dating a girl and she said your perfect but She’s holding out for evolution and something else. You’d be heart broken. You broke this bottles heart. Lol
There should be a few 11s allowed by D&D to offset/correct/modulate the perfect 9s. Case in point from this episode. 😂😂😂 Fantastic episode. Perfect 9. 😊
I get their argument for value I just think they didn’t see what each other was saying 😂 Dutch and Dillon were basically saying you can’t get it for $400-$600 (which is mostly true) and Jules was saying for what they paid for it it was a 4. But not many other people would be able to get it for $400 so the value of THEIR bottle was 4 but for everyone else I’d lean more towards Dutch’s score
A detail missed on the bottle. There is an actual concept behind the design. "The 24 facets (sides) of the Hibiki bottle symbolize the 24 hours of the day and 24 seasons- or "Sekki"** of the traditional Japanese calendar. The bottle includes 24 sides to allow consumers to visualize the time the whisky spends aging in the cask, the history, and 'time' itself."
I think the 17 is better. I used to go to Japan for work several times a year and found a bar that has this for 12 bucks a pour and over time I stopped ordering this in favor of the 17.
@@iluvcakes19 don’t look for bottles of Japanese whisky. Just find it at bars. Any hotel or nice restaurant will have the full lineup. If you want to buy bottles, stick to bourbon, turkey 12 and Evan Williams 12 in particular
Japanese .... But the star is not the whisky :D.and pure american patience :). Perfect ! But... Is hibiki's 10 the same as Dewar's 10. I felt like starting WW2, or ending it, watdhingbthis phenomenal video. Love.
Jules grading and reasoning for his grade being 9 on multiple categories despite not being able to say what exactly is missing? "Room for improvement for future" is not a reason for not giving it a 10. And he gave aesthetics a full score, which is clearly something they can make better. It is a box and bottle that can be changed and made better. All the Hibikis have the same box and bottle fyi. Jules reasoning for not giving 10 on multiple categories despite not having a solid reason why is kind of annoying. Rant over!
I agree with Juls for once on the scoring because this is not thee very best that Suntory offers but it is very good but way over priced for what it is
Not sure if you’ve done a review of Redbreast 27 but if it were between this hibiki 21 or RB 27 which would you reach for? Have the chance to get one of these at msrp but can’t decide which to get. Hoping to get a bottle that it honestly special no matter the occasion, time of year etc..
Peat, fruit, pairing. Perfection Peat, fruit, pairing. Perfection. Half way through and I wonder what Dillon will say next. Not. Diamond is at 90 so why the problems with Jules giving a 9? Great review but I stand by America's "honesty broker". 🤣
Nothing more indicative of this dram's quality than how much you guys argued over it. Words be damned.
Exactly!

The bickering. 😂😂 This is one of y’all’s finest pieces of work right here.
Liked the old-style intro. It reminded me of the Bourbon Guild days. I agree with Dutch and Dillon - the words perfect means it scores a 10 put of 10.
Same here, missed that dude in the intro speaking with a sultry voice
Jules making you mad with 9's is just his way of getting revenge for when you interrupted his Springbank food pairing recommendations
Jules doesn't know what "perfect" means and Dillon doesn't know that "value" has multiple meanings that aren't all "bargain"
Facts already well established back in the Bourbon Guild days!

$400 is steal now. MSPR is easily $600, and secondary prices are well north of $1000 lol
I just want to bring up the fact that Jules gave Weller 107 a score of 94, but only gave this a score of 91.......
Had to pause at 2:35 because as I look up this bottle today I can NOT find it cheaper than $1,500 a bottle. Looking forward to this review of a whiskey that I'll never try!
This new/old intro is great keep it going
I think we need a Dillon vs Mr. Dillon comparison between this and George T Stagg
I listened to the podcast version and had to watch the video after hearing you guys describe it the way you did

I bought a bottle of this Hibiki 21 year for $400 at my local Total Wine. It's sitting on a shelf, still in the box.
So I have to say Jules is trying to compare each category to every whiskey that was ever made. It seems it should be more of a score that addresses the category. Did the whiskey address the category perfectly?
Live chat : "it's happy hour - it's more like happy 3hrs actually"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣✨👍🏻.
Jules it's just a number just give it a 10 if you say it's perfect it's a 10 your not being fair to the scoring system .
Ladies and Gentlemen…..Mr. Dillon! 👏🏾
Been waiting for this episode ever since Jules slipped twice on live LOL
I don’t even like whisky and yet I must give this video a 10 for entertainment value! 😃👍👍
love your guys stuff! have you tried the hibiki 100th year anniversary blend? exclusive to japan bars and hotels. would love to hear your thoughts on that dram and where it stands amongst 17 and 21
The bottle is faceted. It has 21 sides. But where did you guys manager to find this for $400?
I know share to the community
I imagine its good, but seems like a flex a Japanese business man does at a fancy izakaya meeting.
I guess this is the ultimate show of awesomeness for Tears of Llorona.....Most underrated spirit ever....Will anything beat it?
very Bourbon Guild-like opening! love it
wow there guys, you still have the 30 and 35 to try. Jules is leaving room for these in the future.
30 scored lower on Distiller fwiw
A leaderboard drinkthrough might be a fun video for a special occasion sometime

A Zen experience. Like the sound of one hand clapping. Indescribable!

Hibiki 21 vs Springbank 21 :p
Guys you need to define the Value category, you need to score based on your purchase price.
Love this show. You guys are the best
3 stooges @ 29mins!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣........😎👍🏻.
I just hope I can find a whiskey that makes Me as happy as Dillon is while drinking habiki 21
Why can't Jules love? Embrace the 9 when you say it is perfect or does Jules just want to see you all lose your Bradshaw
Have you guys done the Yamazaki 18 yet? I actually prefer it to the Hibiki 21, which is great also.
You guys gave it a 92.6 and it wasn't rounded up to 93? why not?

try springbank 21 then?
