Here is a tip from an old chicken farmer if you keep the drinkers for you chickens at the height of their backs they will enjoy their water a lot more, if you notice when they drink they must put their heads back to swallow so if the drinker is at the proper height there won’t be debris in it and there won’t be spillage.
Hi, your “gate system” is a well known here in NZ and it’s called a Taranaki Gate after some farmer in the Taranaki area whose gate was broken by a bull and so he made a temporary gate to keep the stock in the paddock. Worked so well that it was not replaced by a metal gate for years! On a small holding like yours you are governed by the weather and source of water. The rest is made up of hard graft. Cheers mate. Harera
Those "gate systems" are very common in Spain pastures or "pasturized public areas". It's supper annoying to open them on bycicle or when you're in car, especially at night.
@@pamiam9017 - More Kiwi's here! We've got 3 chickens in the backyard at the moment on our whopping 673 sqm section. They have the whole backyard for themselves so the grass is now non-existant but the eggs are eggcellent :)
Loved the video. Great structure from the chickens (and you) waking up to finally taking themselves off to bed. They look as if they are real characters and quite different personalities. Your garden and veg look amazing too. Hard work pays off. 👍🐓🐣
I am not sure if you ever watch your vids back with c/captions on but when you let the chickens of their yard to get their seed and pellets, it described their noise as [applause] which was too perfect as far as cc errors go! 🥰
Here's a thought. What about a beehive? Or hives? You could place them at the far end of your property. All you need is a bit of protective clothing when you harvest the honey and you are up and running. Your own honey, plus the added benefit for the plant of the bees pollinating your and the neighbours' flowering plants.
I would suggest that you extend the coop roof to cover the whole of the run. This will ensure they have somewhere dry to walk when it rains. Not that they mind the rain too much but it helps keep the coop clean and dry.
Enjoy your videos immensely. Love background noises from birds, insects and animals. Your commentary is great. Music not necessary. Silence is lovely too.
Good evening from New Zealand. It's raining here and the heat pump is on. A most enjoyable way to spend a small part of Saturday night, learning about chickening. Loved the chickens the food and the wine. You two are great company. Cheers.
Hello! I have been watching and enjoying your vlogs since your “old series”. I just wanted to share something with you that I learned growing up with a “fowl fancier”. My father kept two kinds of pheasants, Japanese Silkies, ducks, bantam chickens, Cornish Cross meat chickens, and about five different chicken varieties. I was the assistant chicken keeper. We also provided calcium by feeding the egg shells from the layers. But there is an important step first. Save your shells until you have a baking tray full and toast them in the oven until they are golden toasty looking. Use a medium temp of 350* F Then when cool, crumble and give to the chickens. The taste is changed and they won’t be encouraged to peck their own eggs. I warn you the stink of baking is awful! But with hundreds of chickens we never had problems with “egg cannibalism”. Sorry to add yet another chore, but it is worth it!!
Hi! Love your chicken vlog. We have around twenty completely free range chickens and cocks. We don't have them for the eggs but to control mosquitoes, flys and other bugs. They sleep in our orange grove high up in the trees and they nest wherever they want. They mostly forage for their food but we also give them vegetable scraps and sometimes as a treat we give them corn and mixed seeds. This all to say that our chickens eat loads of oranges because only the skins are bad for them and they know that because they open a lid in the orange and eat only the pulp. They also have pears, apples, plums, figs, loquats, persimmons, blackberries and other fruits to chose from and of course grasses and other greenery that grows naturally around here. They know by instinct what they can and can't eat and teach their little chicks. We have never had a chicken die from eating something they shouldn't have. Some do fall to predators, but very rarely. Most die of old age, between 5 -10 years. Baby chicks that are abandoned by mom are brought inside and raised in a box with a UV light. When nearly adults we free them during the day and bring them back in at night but gradually they learn to fend for themselves. Those that have been raised by us are very tame and do sometimes come into the house if we leave a door or window open. If we are outside doing chores they like to sometimes perch on us. A different way of having chickens I suppose 😊
You could leave the coop door open at night but close the run door. Then the chickens can come out of the coop early but you could sleep late. Also your coop ramp seems very steep for the chickens. They slide when going down ramp. I like your setup
Good luck keeping the chickens out of the potatoes with that fence. 🤣 once they get a taste for the potato beds they will be back. We now have a 2 meter high fence round our veggie garden. So far so good. 😊 Love watching your videos. I’m learning a lot from you guys 👍🏻
Good Sunday Mornin' Got my taters in the bucket. Times are tough. We all need to do what we can to survive - strong and self sufficient. Growing our own food for the most part - occasionally shopping at the Dollar Tree or thrift stores (walking there instead of driving whenever possible). I try to support my local merchants, when I do have to spend money on something - avoiding those "delivered to your doorstep" companies like Amazon. Overall, I'm doing my part to avoid increasing the carbon footprint.
Your sense of humor is so tongue in cheek. I really enjoy listening to your narratives. Your garden is just gorgeous, and your chickens are so entertaining. U2 really outdid yourself with that chicken coop build.
So lovely to spend a day with your 'girls'. Alas all of ours were killed in a dog attack last week while we were away from the house and we are still reeling from the shock. It has however prompted us to go on a major review and renovation of our yard system. Ours is very similar to yours, but at 10 years of age is seriously in need of a maintenance overhaul. Keep up the good work. We enjoy watching your videos from here in Oz.
As I was a girl. I could buy some small chickens. On the old place they could fly also very well! The flyed in the big trees and lies her eggs there. My chickenplace had a 3meter high "wall". But they could also overfly this. But they liked my chickenhouse for liying the eggs, because our trees were maybe to small... Greatings from Switzerland.
Well, that was interesting, I don’t know much about chickens. I was not expecting them to come running when you called, there’s just something so comical about a chicken running, it always makes me laugh! The coup is gorgeous as coups go, nicely done, your land is developing very well too! Thanks so much for your wonderful episode.
If you let the eggshells dry and then crush them, the chickens won't eat the whole eggs and they'll eat more of it. The grit is helpful for their digestion. Nice video!
I love watching your vlogs as I find them really relaxing! You’re life is full of interesting things to do!! Your produce is growing really really well which you must be really pleased about! Keep up the great vlogs🥰🥰🥰
Congratulations on all the hard work, as I have shared before I am from 🇵🇹 , and have seen and heard that you can collect the 🦑 squids or cuttlefish bones that One can find on the beach for feeding them calcium rich dietary, if are ever walking on the beach side You can collect them

Great to see the chickens. I used to keep a few in an enclosed run and when I went in to clean them out I would squat and lean against the wall and one of them would come up and perch on my shoulder like Long John Silver and have a long conversation with me. Nice chicken coop. I use a product called diamotaceous earth. Look up this product it is terrific for healthy chickens. I also soaked some strip's of rag in mite solution, friendly to animals, and wrapped it around each end of the perches, as mites are active at night. Enjoy your girls they are great fun.
Last year I installed a chickenguard automatic door with a timer here in PT, which can use battery or a USB power supply. I was tired of getting up before 6 am. So far it is totally worth it. It uses a little winch to hoist an aluminum guillotine door. Also can be set with a light sensor instead of the timer.

Love the pully system guy's, so simpleand work's a treat 😉and the other fence and gate work's well too for the time being. You have both done fantastic work, well done to you both 👏👏👏👍😉🇮🇪🍀
That was great, seeing what is actually involved in keeping chickens, although, it's not like you have to follow them around to keep an eye on them. The Veggie patch looks fabulous, you both must eat well from all that, it's so good to see. Looking forward to seeing what else you both are up to.

I know this video was about the chickens and their "hotel" but really I could not take my eyes off your vegetable garden. It is looking fabulous. Your chickens look very healthy. . Also coming to you from NZ that is surely called a Taranaki gate. Cheers till the next video
It looks so idilic but I also know it is hard work when it is hot. Liked your gate system on the Coop and what another viewer called, a " Taranaki Gate ". Nice story to it as well. As far as your chicken wire gate goes, if it works why change it? Just improve it with better materials that will last longer. Loved the video and I look forward to many many more. Thank you both, ever so much.
Here is a tip from an old chicken farmer if you keep the drinkers for you chickens at the height of their backs they will enjoy their water a lot more, if you notice when they drink they must put their heads back to swallow so if the drinker is at the proper height there won’t be debris in it and there won’t be spillage.
I have not seen such a wellmade chicken coop before. I love the sliding doors with rope pulls. 🐓
Aww, the chickens putting themselves in to bed. What a life for them, they must be the most cared and loved for 💕
"because she's a bit special". That had me chuckling right to the end of the video. Precious... Oh and 'human people'. I loved that too...
