Uncommon Knowledge continually outdoes itself with it’s selection of guests. Dr. Rice’s expertise has always been well-known, but this conversation shows her skill at conveying the central significance of otherwise complicated events of the past 40 years.
That’s a somewhat true and very superficial observation - which led to “let’s give it then to country X!”. Democracy is what happens to free-thinking people who won’t put up with something else. It’s them, not democracy, that which brings resilience.
I'm so happy to see you interviewing Dr. Rice! She is such an inspiration and it's absolutely CRIMINAL that she is not held up in the African American culture as a role model! (and I say that as someone who disagrees with her on many issues)
She's not held up in American culture as a role model at all. Not because she's black, but because she's a smart Republican and was part of the George W. Bush administration.
What a delight! Thank you Peter for hosting this incredible woman. I still remember, 2001 she visited Israel, trying to negotiate peace. After their meeting PM Ariel Sharon, asked by journalists for his opinion, commented "well, she is smart.. and she has beautiful legs". Israeli feminists immediately raised hell, but I loved his comment. Ms. Rice was and still is smart and beautiful. We would be lucky to have her as our 48th president.
I very much like to be wrong but I believe we will regret the day we integrated China to us. It will be seen as greatest geopolitical mistake for the ages.
Whether integrating China in to global economic is a mistake, is a problem that has no conclusion yet. Because history is still unfolding, and China is undergoing some weird internal changes now. I great admire her courage and deep understanding of autocracy regime. She build her optimism on solid base.
But too bad UK couldn't find Dr. Rice a better fitting chair for this interview. She looks almost like a child sitting at the grownups' table. Raise her seat up.
I really respect Condi; super smart & knowledgeable, obviously tons of experience. I'm always going to listen to what she has to say and take it seriously. That said...she was also a key member of the foreign policy and national defense team who gave us the Iraq debacle...and that's always going to make me wary as well. As a lifelong Republican who came of age (and started a 22-yr USN career) during the Reagan/Bush41 years, I thought in 2000 "okay, we've got the A-team back in charge now". By 2004, I felt really let down and deeply disillusioned by that bunch, and remain so today.
If the dems wanted a smart, capable and experienced black woman to get elected to the White House, why did they not pick Condoleezza Rice? I think she could win over Donald Trump hands down. What an amazing human being.
Because she is a conservative (even served on President Bush's administration). The better question would be: Why isn't the Republican party uplifting her status and urging her to lead their party?
No. No one can “win over Donald”. Donald is completely self absorbed and completely incapable of being “won over”. Donald wants to see a payoff in the most literal sense. Ms. Rice is wonderfully insightful and very intelligent. I think that she would be a great strategic asset, but we will have to wait for the next Whitehouse administration.
There is one little thing they didn't discuss fully, that is, how to fight three war simultaneously. She mentioned allies, morale and technique. They talked about how bravely Ukraine is fighting, and that even could be an example for America. Yes, don't underestimate your allies, don't underestimate the power of true belief. And yes, it's going to be a long attrition though...
Excellent interview. We have a lot of difficult issue to adress as a country, at a time when we are struggling to maintain our internal focus on being united and increasing real value production. A house divided must fall. What's the domestic plan to move towards a united country??? I feel like all the political efforts as seen on TV have been to destroy our country.
American dominance in the latter half of 20th century have a huge part based on all the old empires and potential peers had destroyed themselves in 2 World wars /colonial legacy and US end up being the safest place for all the capital, industries, intellectuals the old colonial empires developed and looted, plus the chance to pick and inherit former colonial political, economic interest all over the world. Soviet Union was never even close: only decades old, ravaged by civil wars and WWII, with a rapid industrial program that left many social problems undealt due to the rapid change, a political infancy heavily influenced by aforementioned handicaps, and then immediately went into cold war with US. Thus US policy makers made the grave mistake of thinking all the resulting American dominance is because of their own exaggerated and narcissist infected exemplary attributes (not all are false, but many important ones are) while ignoring the important external paradigms that are not of US's doing . Even so, for a while US seems to be heading down a good path for humanity's leadership even with many flaws in her ( with the hope she eventually will overcome them), but then Korean, Vietnam immediately weakened US position with lasting long term social and economic effects that never went away(overall negative for leadership role), propaganda and cold war towards the soviets and communism also played a role in closing down other attributes needed to be developed for a lasting leadership and perpetuated laissiez- fare corporate capitalism and special interests that ultimately resulted in deterioration of US politics. Fast forward to 2024 All the real statesmen willing to work towards WORKABLE (not propagandized and slogan shouting) principles and policies for both the nation and humanity that once at least had a partial place in American politics are now near extinction (or compromised to irrelevance) while most of the flaws were never addressed and new required attributes for leadership never developed, and with it, any real chance of US to continue claim to humanity's leadership despite what US elites likes to say or think. Then the current problem facing US is, the dominance is rapidly fading away as the aforementioned paradigm the US enjoyed after WWII fades and other nations rise, many falsehoods and over-exaggeration of American exceptionalism and leadership and the narrative of democracy/communism/autocracy ( in my opinion have many characteristics of overly simplistic, misleading, falsified reality, politically manipulated) and other supposedly American "quality" is being tested against a reality Americans never really fully cared to understand, and all the self-aggrandizing self promotion over the decades made US unable to properly self reflect adjust and instead re-trench in the only known familiar old mold (that is quickly losing relevance) or worse, going back to outdated and disgusting 16-19 century old western geopolitical habits that lead to 2 world wars in a bid to use what they think will be useful in preserving their power from their limited understanding of Western history only ( the real effect will be rest of the world will respond with increasing disgust and alienation). That is on top of a dysfunctional internal politics mired in special interests many of which I deem very harmful for a nation. Overly aggressive overextension abroad, dysfunctional at home while stuck in a (false) ego loop along with a very flawed appraisal of one's capabilities and virtues is a recipe for DISASTER. Condoleezza Rice's comments on China is one reflection of this symptom: China reigned in free businesses running amok is precisely because they learned lessons Americans should have learnt: Let businessmen run overly free and powerful they will start affecting politics and society, some of the effects are very negative. As for the online education part Chinese leadership is responding to social ills of education business gone overboard and resulting in Chinese households spends vast amounts of income on education programs businesses lured people into that is having very harmful social effects. But of course, all these details of another government trying to address issues is swept under the tried and tested aforementioned US propaganda slogan "limiting freedom and business and facilitate autocratic control"(whatever makes you feel better) . Really disappointing coming from someone of Condoleezza Rice's stature, and pity the ignorant American public who's limited source about China is from likes of her. Despite all the propaganda and manipulated presentation of China to the American public, China is still continuing to rise and people's satisfaction with governance as well as business appraisal of the business environment in China belies what US elites likes to portray. One has to wonder how long will US elites hold off self reflection and reappraisal? Or will they just walk down the same path until the whole thing comes down? Or is it already too late as decades of self promotion is already so ingrained in both Elite and public that they don't even know how to dig out even if they want to? As a humanist first, I am really saddened to see the once hope and potential humanity displayed in the US (again stressing, always with critical flaws that are not just US flaws but humanity's possible flaws that needed to be overcome but never did) had come down to what it is today. One can only hope with information and intellectual capabilities we've now possess and possibly will develop more of humanity can eventually better understands itself and overcome many pitfalls/traps of reality and their inherent flaws to craft a better future.
A true living example of a leader we want and need! For once in my lifetime would be refreshing to finally not feel forced to choose between the lesser of two evils.
It bothers me when people say, "I'm not a proponent of the great man theory of history" and then proceed to make a point that directly proves that very same theory
Viewing the world from this perspective would make it impossible to maintain a good relationship between China and the U.S. Moreover, it would force many Eastern countries to choose sides. This worldview is dangerous for both the U.S. and China, and extremely dangerous for the people of East Asia
How can you list Russian casualties without also listing Ukraine casualties? Can we keep in mind the growth of the size of the human race since the collapse of the USSR? Using absolute numbers is very deceptive.
Love all Uncommon Knowledge intervews. I think we need to look very carefully at the costs, the blow-backs for failed foriegn policies from the people that were wronged by these failures, even American's that feel betrayed and lied to. I am still so so glad to be an American and hope some kind of atonement can be attained for our wrongs. The arrows-of-truth are coming to knowledge more and more and let's just hope they can tipped with a balm of love and honesty, instead of what Esienhower's farewell address warned of.
WOW, BRING HER BACK, or at least require Kamala Harris to read some books written by Condoleezza Rice and Tom Sowell. The scary thing to me is a President Kamala Harris NOT China, Russia, North Korea, Iran
The former Western leaders fooled themselves believing that individual prosperity under this globalization aim by the west would bring about changes socially would trump differences in social ideologies. The USA while acting in at least in part for its own self interest (low cost manufacturing), gave training and investments to China, transfers of technologies too, speeding up China's industrialization, and putting way too much trust that China it would behave with obligatory gratitude and even friendship. The West has no one to blame but itself for a great portion of the industrialization of China, with the shift into management of XI, having created this global competitor. Lesson learned........ Now for the west needs to focus on mobilization collectively in being the first people to the doors of the developing nations. The west needs to develop an effective and aggressive alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative, even possibly to the extent of buying out debt these countries entered into with China. As well it needs to counter BRIC's, and see that Putin's ambition dies the horrible death it deserves. It needs to convince China that our markets for their goods are not to be taken for granted anymore. Any of the West that turns to self/state isolationism, is playing a tune that ignores the international responsibility it shares, in holding back the push of Putin, etc, This cannot take place We all (meaning the whole world) deserves a lot better.....
Question to Secretary Rice | What about the Wikileaks Files including the numerous drafts of how the United States Government would be re-organuzed before GW Bush was elected? And - all that before 11 September 2001 ?
‘ We have the best techno savvy kids in the world. What are we doing? ‘ We’re encouraging them to get rich through exploiting surveillance capitalism against our rights and values of individual freedom and privacy. That’s what we’re doing.
We didn’t deserve Condi Rice in public service, that’s the sad reality, a sad example. She was right there and would’ve done amazing things, but our civic service doesn’t offer that to people. It almost exclusively attracts a certain type of person.
More rah rah for dear old Ukraine. What is in the Donbas for the USA? Where does it end. What do all these wars achieve. THAT is the question. Which war would she end to win the other two. Is this her job!
The dialog challenge is to address the poverty of people, education, and the realities of corruption versus human decency. Covid seems not to have lessons learned that could move all of us in a positive direction
How do i begin to describe how rare and exceptional this interview/er/ee is? How does one become part of the Hoover Institution? I want to be a part of it!
Looking back into history, the Brits appear more realistic than the USA. The Brits passed on the baton peacefully. They grudgingly allowed USA to raise and thereby build bench strength. The USA of today is behaving like a banayan tree under which nothing grows. A sensible policy shift would be to allow Japan, Korea and Germany to rearm to their teeth.
Undeclared wars with people responding to the call to serve and the corresponding price that families have paid is never discussed. People first policies not the military machine must have priority. Listen well on the need to create producing units and good and healthy people with solid agricultural policies.
I am so tir d of the repeated and banal characterization of china as an adversary. Time to talk about cooperation and not clashes. Our foreign policy only fiffused genocides--iraq, Afghanistan, iran, gaza, lebanon, Yemen. Stop the sinister provocation of hostilities
I must admit.... she's far more qualified than I would have imagined 15-20 years ago. I am a fan of her & trust her interpretations. She's very qualified & her expertise should still be present with our nations leadership. She is very capable!
She talks well. But if I recall correctly, her stint in the government was not very successful. As someone who grew up in Soviet Union, she does not seem to be much of an expert on that subject to me, but what do I know? Still, compared to the current ilk of Kamala and such, she is a giant.
Also find it telling that she rightly puts emphasis on the natsec importance of triumphing over the Xi Putin alliance. She said I would not want to be president if they are going to take a victory tour. But she also said that not one American soldier needs to be involved. Ukraine has lost so many soldiers facing what she rightly described as Russia's greatest strength it's mass, because in part of our inadequate weapons support. There was a lot of talk here about how America needs to get its tough spirit back. This needs to be reconciled with the obvious prevailing squeamishness that we cannot lose a single American soldier and yet we invest $800 billion annually in a military for them.
“Ukrainian whiz kids patched together technology and turned it around to a standstill; of course we can too, we have the best education in the world!” Nope. American companies are dominated by foreign educated engineers. When I call for support I have to wade through several layers, and when I finally get my answer, it comes with an accent.
Totally disingenuous to pretend China has the largest navy in the world. China counts a huge spectrum of coast guard fleet as it's Navy, and EVEN WITH THAT, America's Navy is TWICE the size by tonnage. It's only larger by count of vessels, but a converted cargo ship with a 40mm cannon is not the same as a purpose-built Destroyer with 9 weapon systems and long range missiles. It's genuinely not even close to compare the Navy, any defense analyst will tell you that. Plus, China's navy is much more dependent upon leveraging civilian assets for navy maneuvers and paramilitary naval forces to intimidate foreign neighbors. Lastly, their ships have a fraction of the capabilities - like percentage of ships with anti-missile defense capabilities.
Statement to Stanford University and Hoover Institute | James Bond Stockdale, Ret. USN & Professor of Philosophy Stanford University | born Abingdon Illinois | my Hometown Hero.
Disappointed in Condis one question for Kamala - are you willing to increase the military budget - when earlier she said that what really needs to be done is for the current 800 billion budget to be spent smarter on new technology and a new ways of partnering with the private sector.
I don't often agree with Rice, but one thing is certain: she's no DEI hire.
Trump/Vance needs to sit inthe presence of Dr Rice for her teaching and wisdom
Uncommon Knowledge continually outdoes itself with it’s selection of guests. Dr. Rice’s expertise has always been well-known, but this conversation shows her skill at conveying the central significance of otherwise complicated events of the past 40 years.
Condoleezza Rice: “Democracies are not as fragile as autocracies.” What an encouraging and truthful observation! Brilliant!
Thank you!
That’s a somewhat true and very superficial observation - which led to “let’s give it then to country X!”. Democracy is what happens to free-thinking people who won’t put up with something else. It’s them, not democracy, that which brings resilience.
Condoleezza should be our president. She is a solid individual and her sophisticated approach to global issues is unmatched.
Always great to hear Dr. Rice's reflections. She would have been a great POTUS.
I'm so happy to see you interviewing Dr. Rice! She is such an inspiration and it's absolutely CRIMINAL that she is not held up in the African American culture as a role model! (and I say that as someone who disagrees with her on many issues)
‘cuz the sista is Republican
She's not held up in American culture as a role model at all. Not because she's black, but because she's a smart Republican and was part of the George W. Bush administration.
America is an idea. I'm so grateful that someone said that.
and ideas change over time …
Why can't we just do the smart thing and vote Condoleezza Rice in as President of the United States?
I so agree!
She should have stayed in the game.
Condi and William Burns.
It would be hard for her to win a general election
Unfortunately that is not the current reality so who is most likely to come close to her prognosis, Harris or Trump.
Someone should tell the host that we are in the THIRD year of the Ukrainian war.
I very much like to be wrong but I believe we will regret the day we integrated China to us. It will be seen as greatest geopolitical mistake for the ages.
Corporate conglomerates that have less and less allegiance to the US are to blame.
Agree.
It's, actually, inevitable. You embraced China so you have strength to beat Soviet Union.
Whether integrating China in to global economic is a mistake, is a problem that has no conclusion yet. Because history is still unfolding, and China is undergoing some weird internal changes now.
I great admire her courage and deep understanding of autocracy regime. She build her optimism on solid base.
1,000%
Thank you for the guest! What a treasure of human beings Dr. Rice is!
I could not be any happier about your choice of guest. What a remarkable person.
But too bad UK couldn't find Dr. Rice a better fitting chair for this interview. She looks almost like a child sitting at the grownups' table. Raise her seat up.
Excellent as usual! Rice is a voice and a vision desperately needed to be heeded. Great interview, Peter!
Imagine if we had her instead of Kamala…
Why compare them? What's the similarity? They aren't in the same party, aren't they?
You know you can write in anyone to be President right? I vote for Daffy Duck every 4 years.
An articulate Kamala is still a Kamala.
No... Instead or Trump. This is an actual republican... Not RINO/MAGA garbage.
why not instead of Donny?
People telling "the US should have a woman of colour as a President" - why haven't you started from Condi?
I doubt Rice would agree to run on Democratic ticket
Because she is a conservative (even served on President Bush's administration). The better question would be: Why isn't the Republican party uplifting her status and urging her to lead their party?
She is a Republican not a democrat.
Probably because she's not a democrat....
And yes, it's going to be a long attrition though...
ukraine is losing … and lsrael is becoming isolated internationally… the USA won’t be forgotten as the country that supports these two failures …
Democracy, " we stand," when we fight and protect the Big Idea, thank you Condoleezza Rice and Peter Robinson for a this reminder of History.
Sold out our working class for china
Ms. Rice should be the first woman President of the United States.
Excellent interview. Her knowledge must be shared
Dr Condi is AMAZINGLY SMART WITH INSIGHTS.
Dr Rice is pure and simple awesome.
Excellent interview.
We have a lot of difficult issue to adress as a country, at a time when we are struggling to maintain our internal focus on being united and increasing real value production.

Outstanding talk. Thank you, both.
A true living example of a leader we want and need! For once in my lifetime would be refreshing to finally not feel forced to choose between the lesser of two evils.
It bothers me when people say, "I'm not a proponent of the great man theory of history" and then proceed to make a point that directly proves that very same theory
"we're broke" says so much, in many ways.

American patriots told and warned everybody this was going to happen during the GAT and NAFTA debates.
When she said "America is an idea". I got teary eyed. Great statement for a great country
What would we ever do without both of you
What a remarkable interview, fascinating, thought provoking, and a demonstration of competency that is sadly lacking in current America.
WOW, BRING HER BACK, or at least require Kamala Harris to read some books written by Condoleezza Rice and Tom Sowell. The scary thing to me is a President Kamala Harris NOT China, Russia, North Korea, Iran

Isn't the bigger question: Can capitalism and Islam cohabit?
‘ We have the best techno savvy kids in the world. What are we doing? ‘
We’re encouraging them to get rich through exploiting surveillance capitalism against our rights and values of individual freedom and privacy. That’s what we’re doing.
Peter, I'm from Hong Kong and am reasonably well informed. Martin Lee is not under house arrest. But thanks for the good interview.
The best thing to do to defend Taiwan is to change American policy on the war in Ukraine and to allow Russian defeat.
Excellent and intelligent talk. Thanks.
Love how she puts the issues in words this old hermit can understand.
Condi is always a dynamic speaker.
The smartest on the job
We didn’t deserve Condi Rice in public service, that’s the sad reality, a sad example. She was right there and would’ve done amazing things, but our civic service doesn’t offer that to people. It almost exclusively attracts a certain type of person.

Condoleezza Rice is great!
As a former student I have great respect for her, but I think these are two points that need further analysis
Excellent interview! We, who love freedom, feel now more hopeful❤
The challenge of masses of unincorporated people of different cultures is daunting.
Is it really our business how other countries govern themselves? I think not. Very bright woman, no doubt.
Condi 2028
Sorry. She’s not interested.
Great interview of an extraordinary political and foreign relations leader.
The dialog challenge is to address the poverty of people, education, and the realities of corruption versus human decency. Covid seems not to have lessons learned that could move all of us in a positive direction
Is Ukrainian really our way forward?
I disagree. I am sorry for our participation.
All these clapping seals in the comments.... Condi is brilliant but not the policy path I want...
stupid war crippling the US economy…

She talks well. But if I recall correctly, her stint in the government was not very successful. As someone who grew up in Soviet Union, she does not seem to be much of an expert on that subject to me, but what do I know? Still, compared to the current ilk of Kamala and such, she is a giant.
Prior to alliance we are challenged to support those wanting to educate their people and create the path to a democratic society.
Great discussions!
One classy lady.
Would like to see her as the next secretary of state.
She’s done that, been there.
“Ukrainian whiz kids patched together technology and turned it around to a standstill; of course we can too, we have the best education in the world!” Nope. American companies are dominated by foreign educated engineers. When I call for support I have to wade through several layers, and when I finally get my answer, it comes with an accent.
... well said ... excellence in statesmanship must dominate our policies ....
A good argument for repudiating Trump.
How are these people our leaders there so weak
Wonderful
its been nice seeing her take the podcast circuit
“Condi In ‘28”
Condi is a great American who understands America and what's at state with these authoritarian regimes.
USA, please mind your own business.
Excellent presentation
I always learn something. Thanks!
You substitute a democracy in Iran for the Shah . You give 53 standing ovations to the butcher of Gaza . Etc
Dr. Rice as POTUS 2028!
Exactly, spend the money better. We need to redo the procurement and spending process. As it is, it encourages waste and graft.
Thank You
Condo’s a goat among chickens. Special force. True American!

🎉❤😊
Disappointed in Condis one question for Kamala - are you willing to increase the military budget - when earlier she said that what really needs to be done is for the current 800 billion budget to be spent smarter on new technology and a new ways of partnering with the private sector.
She should be president!
