Ultra violet light particles are activated in the seal that react like an explosion, to destroy any bacteria that might've survived other processes so it's sterile upon use, hence the single use rule and why they say to leave on as long as you can, bacteria have a life cycle, having dead bacteria our bodies can gather data from and aid white blood cells fight the live ones, it's why people with immunity suppressing things are given a dead variant of a virus like flu, less danger of causing symptoms but similar quality of effect, just reserved for those like myself who can't have the normal jabs for health... Anyways, I've gone off on a tangent explaining my theory

What should also be mentioned is that this is also known as a Corona discharge and the ionisation of air will also produce small amounts of ozone as some oxygen atoms combines into O3. Try it out, give it a smell when doing this. There are ozone generators and air ionisers you can purchase for pretty cheap that produce ionized air via Corona discharge. You can smell the ozone very strongly from these devices. Ozone has an effect of killing bacteria, and ionised air is great for removing airborne particles such as bacteria, smoke, dust etc. Due to the positively charged ions that become attracted to negatively charged (grounded) surfaces. Causing the particles to settle on those surfaces. - Electronics Engineer.
However, there IS one major drawback to those commercial ozone generators: the O3 is quite toxic, and even at low levels can cause respiratory damage with long exposures! See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone#Physiology for details.
Yo physics peeps! If you have any other suggestions for everyday mysteries you've noticed, leave them in the comments with the hashtag #everydaymystery (so I can search them). I’m also itching to try this in Neon and Helium gas. If you try it, tweet me @thephysicsgirl with evidence 😏
#everydaymystery When I accidentally dropped the ferrite core of a transformer, it produced some spark when it broke. I wonder what's the reason behind it.
Ever since I was a kid, I've heard that if you chew up "Winto-Green" mints from Wrigley's in the dark, with your mouth open, you can see sparks. I never believed it, but maybe there's something to it afterall.
And THAT was the basis for the advertisement for "Winto-Green" lifesavers that asked" if you chew a Winto-Green lifesaver does it makes a spark" It does exactly that.
My guess is it is bremsstrahlung, however, xrays are only produced with voltages in excess of 80 kilovolts. I don’t think bandaid wrappers can produce that much voltage. Yeah, I don’t really know why that happens 😐
I witnessed the same phenomenon when I was opening an envelope in the dark a few weeks back. It seemed interesting and since then I've taken every envelope I've gotten and opened it in the dark. Today I stumbled upon this video and was glad to see that someone had taken the time to look into it a little more.
Don't know if this has been mentioned, but sometimes this happens if you're in bed and you are getting into a newly made bed and push your feet down into the sheets and kinda pull the sheets up. You can see it arcing between the sheets if it's dark enough.
Congratulations Dianna on 1M subs. Cant say I’m surprised. You enthusiasm for learning is infectious. Hope you inspire many future scientists and engineers.
Another product which has packaging with this effect: Breathe Right nose strips. If you use those, you put them on every day before bed -- which means you may be opening them in the dark. It is fun to watch the sparks fly. I had always figured the glue used to hold these packages shut formed crystals which break as you open it in the same way that peppermints getting smashed break. Based on this video, I guess I'm wrong. ;-)
Great video as always :) Tiny quibble: bioluminescent waves in San Diego and most other places are caused by dinoflagellates, which are actually microscopic eukaryotes, not bacteria.

35mm film is held onto the spool with a short piece of adhesive tape looped around the spool. In the darkroom, instead of snipping the film from the spool, if the tape was unpeeled from the film, you could see the blue sparks. When the film was processed, you could see the dark spots in the emulsion that represented the flashes of light. You could also get a feeling for how quickly the adhesive tape was unpeeled, lots of light for a quick unpeeling, or very little light if slowly unpeeled, not that that information is likely to be important, just interesting to get a glimpse into what took place in that darkroom many years prior.
I subscribed before you got sick, but I never watched any of your older videos. When I was a child I always wondered this during unwrapping a bandaid... But, never thought of googling it and assumed to be due to friction or so... But, oh girl, thanks for reavealing this and yea I was way close to the concept 😉
Such an unassuming title and thumbnail leads to one of the coolest science explanations on RUclips. Thanks for explaining this thoroughly and engagingly, while keeping it accessible to regular people. Congrats also on the subscribers!
I experienced the same reaction that is being explained in this video when I went to sleep at night. My room was dark and my leg caused friction against my blanket. As I went to pull the blanket I saw the same glow. So maybe the stickiness doesn't have so much to do with the glowing. Maybe it's a rapid breaking where bonds are caused to separate or create an ion between each other at a rapid speed. So, we know that we can see this glow when it's dark, there's friction present and a breaking of bonds.

Found this phenomenon when I was a kid and happened to open a bandaid in the middle of the night... Been baffled by it ever since and couldn't find any information on it! Thank you so much for the enlightenment!!
Some foods change colors in different PH (acid/base) environments. The typical one is red cabbage juice (which you get by boiling purple/red cabbage), but a bunch of the berry juices and some other foods do it too. These juices are typically kind of reddish purple, and turn more intensely toward a different color depending on how acidic or alkaline they get. Usually they go sort of gray blue, then green in base solutions, and bright reddish pink in acids. My guess is that the plates were made whiter/cleaner with an alkaline bleach or cleaner, which wasn't fully washed out. You can probably get some interesting reactions with other stuff! Work on a non-paper plate or cup and add to a bit of cherry juice little drops/sprinkles of things like lemon juice, dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, and whatever else seems interesting. Best results will happen if you use a different bit of juice for each different substance.
You can get really bright triboluminescence with exercise mats from the 80s; the ones with a foam inner material and a plastic or vinyl outer material. Running your hand across it will create light, and running a fuzzy acrylic blanket makes it look like a light show.
The crystal structure of the glue (mostly plastic) is ripped apart. The light effects are countless light quantums from the electrons falling back to lower energy level after being departed.
About crushing stuff producing light, I observed that when manually grinding a telescope mirror (through the upper glass disk): the coarse carborundum (SiC) #60 or #80 was sparking clearly when crystals were breaking. And, even if it might not be related, a very peculiar odor was created.
I've noticed the effect when opening envelopes, or even when shuffling fleece blankets in the dark(although rarely for fleece) I always thought it must be some kind of stored chemical energi in the glue that got released when you ripped it, but that would not explain the difference when changing the gas surrounding the glue. Cool stuff. Thanks for a nice video that tought me something new and amazing.
Hey Dianna what I think is this luminescence band-aid is created is created by breaking of molicular bonds between sticky adhesive of the band-aid and the surface it is applied to . This phenomenon could be explained by chemiluminescence ???😀😀😀😀 Am I right Dianna ??🤔🤔
I don't think so. Breaking bonds is more difficult than just take a external electron to make an ion. Also, the products of a bond breaking could be uncharged.

When I was a kid my uncle had a house at the Jersey shore. Instead of having dirt/grass/concrete/etc, the entire property was covered in sand colored stones. Whenever I was there at night I would sit outside and toss rocks around, because every time they made contact there would be a little glow, very similar to the glow of the band-aid package.
I've noticed the same effect opening prophylactic wrappers in the dark. These products are probably more likely to be opened in the dark than adhesive bandages. Thank you for explaining triboluminescence.
Some Blankets (I checked with Faux Fur blankets) when scraped/scratched somewhat fastly, also glows I think it's static electricity, this experiment just reminded me of that. It's fun too when you can't sleep
Me too! Jokingly, I was thinking the bandaid wrapper glue had to have spearmint in it. When I was younger, I used to think it was pretty cool chewing spearmint lifesavers in the dark and watching the sparks fly....had no clue back then what really caused the sparks, and used to think it was the spearmint. LOL
Breathe Right strips make a really nice purple light. I noticed because I opened them for my husband in a darkened room right before bed. Neat to learn a little more about it because I always wondered what was going on!

Help me
Hey I have a question
So if you put cherry juice on a paper pizza plate the juice turns blue. Please help explain this
REALLY? IT DOES?
What? I'm curious now. What is a "paper pizza plate"? Do you simply mean a paper plate you can buy at any convenience store?
Similar phenomena, strawberry juice, splattered on our white painted wall, left blue stains.

BWA ha ha ha!!! Had me going there for a second... before I saw the "READ MORE"...
Their? Whose?
Where is the play button. ? It's tradition to show that to viewers !
Yathu prem it takes months for them to ship, apparently
Also, they glow in the dark when they're smashed; so it might not have lasted long in her hands.
Has nobody else been shocked by bandaids? No just me okay.
Fanatic Singer static shock?
That is called being 10. Not insane lmao
That's not the point lmao.
hi Diana!
I LOVE the way you said "okay that's good enough for me" something about the goofy voice!
Congrats on 1M subscribers!! You provide great content, so you deserve it :)
Best bet use surgical tape and it works always
I don't know why she reminds me of windy from gravity falls
I am not the only one who thought that wow
So....what happens with everything?
Came to fulfill what had been "generated"
Congrats for the 1M!! You deserve 10x that!
Some Blankets (I checked with Faux Fur blankets) when scraped/scratched somewhat fastly, also glows
I think it's static electricity, this experiment just reminded me of that. It's fun too when you can't sleep
Chaitanya Singh ya some kind of spark right
I love you're girl splaning 😎😎😎😍😍😍
Scientists are great.
So, indirectly saying that you are great? 🤔
I think its electricity
I was ready to say I was wrong, but it seems like I am smart.
I'm so glad you brought up the lifesavers bc that's what I was thinking about throughout this entire video.
