Here's what's currently on my main PC & laptop as freeware:
WinX DVD Author Freeware - convert and burn to DVD any video file to be able to play on any home dvd/bluray player
    CDBurnerXP - burn audio cd
IMGBurn - burn ISO to disk and other functions
WinX RUclips Downloader Freeware (vital if your browser is chrome) - download any YT video & select resolution
Calibre - eBook Reader & format converter etc
    O & O ShupUp10 - to safeguard you against the MS Win 10 spymachine
WinPatrol - gives you full control over startup programs & services
LightShot - very efficient screenshot program
Image Resizer Windows Powertoy (pre- Win 10 use only, but the best out there) - turns large size pics into very small size
VLC Media Player - has many other functions besides playing almost all formats out there
uTorrent downloader - best torrent downloader, very small memory footprint
BitDefender free AV -- PC Magazine rated it top, and uses very little resources on my laptop
ZoneAlarm FireWall Freeware - recommend turn off Win Firewall & use auto settings - set & forget
FLux - To reduce bluelight automatically at night
KeyBoard LED - if like mine, your keyboard/laptop has no Caps Lock indicator
DesktopOK - saves desktop icons layout
CoreTemp - shows temp of each core & RAM usage in system tray
7ZIP for best compression, uncompress anything out there
AxCrypt - rightclick menu integrated, I find the old v 1.7 to be the most practical
Agent Ransack - for very fast realtime file search without creating an index first
doPDF - after using many, I like this freeware PDF Writer software the best, or try Foxit PDF
PDFXchange Viewer - to avoid the resource hogging Adobe Reader, use this functional & lightweight pdf reader
Heidi Eraser - to securely erase files from your system
BelArc Advisor - to give a thorough summary of all hardware and software plus product keys etc on your system

Thanks for the Libre Office tip. Our old 2007 Microsoft Word has to go through a 2-minute load on our Windows 10 machine EACH and every time we open it. As a result, we just leave Microsoft Word open and collapsed in the background. Microsoft wants a kidney & 1st born for the latest incarnation of Word, PLUS you get a nice monthly "subscription" fee to go with it! That's right -- no one time purchase. Just an ongoing monthly extortion payment for it. Your Libre suggestion is a Godsend. Free, works great, barely a learning curve, and works with all my old saved documents. THANKS, PAL!

Code_Aster la the best tool to calculate any structure, you can simulate incredibly complex physics with the open-source FE & CFD solvers Code_Aster, Code-Saturne, OpenFOAM & Elmer: non-linear thermo-mechanics, coupled fluid-structure dynamics, seismic / non-linear explicit dynamics, contacts, visco-plasticity, fluid dynamics, heat exchange, convection heat transfer and radiation in other words nearly all physics problem can be addressed with the integrated solvers!! Then reload your results files in post-processing applications like Salomé, GMSH or Paraview to visualize your data in 3D... And don't forget all these features are based on open-source / free softwares, so now you don't have to pay for any expensive licenses and if you want, you can even improve it.

AnVir task manager gives you a lot of info on what is going on with computer processes with the option to delete or quarantine Belarc Advisers a snapshot on just about everything to do with what is on your system. Both of these are free with the option upgrade but in the long run-you will not need to do that(most likely).
This one you can use for a time and then ask for an extension for 60 or 90 days(not sure of the number). Eventually you will have to pony up to buy a full version. The program name is Directory OPus-a really good replacement for File Explorer. I paid the money-no regrets on that one.

    • @njneer
      @njneer 5 лет назад +1

@@kiwi8157 I never really dealt with CDs but VLC should be able to open it. Have you tried opening those CDs on a different, possibly newer, computer? If they will open and play on a different computer or for that matter a CD player like in your car then the problem may be with the laptop's CD drive or the computer itself. If they won't play in other devices then the discs may be bad. I hope that helps.

You forgot about Krita. It's an art program just like photoshop. And I think it's way better then Gimp. Krita even allows you to make animations like Adobie Flash and Animate. Another free program I just recently found is Godot. It's a free game development tool similar to Unity. Except your not required to log into an Account to start creating like newer versions of Unity do.

Excellent list! I'd have added Notepad ++, Audacity, and Paint.net. I don't personally use Paint.net but I know a lot of Sim Racers that like to skin race cars with it (I use the paid software Paint Shop Pro for this)

It isn't open-source, but for video editing, you will be hard pressed to find something better that DaVinci Resolve, and it is free. Many consider it better than Premiere Pro.

If you're using Windows, get Media Player Classic - Home Cinema instead of VLC. It uses 1/4 the CPU that VLC does for playing the same video.

Yes Pot Player is made by same team that created KM Player back then , they sold KM Player and created Pot Player. Before Pot Player release KM Player was considered best video player , now for many ppl Pot Player is the best video player but its more to personal preferences i guess.

Although I usually get the full paid versions, a good, free VFX program (not open-source) is HitFilm Express. Even at the free level, you can make some pretty impressive visual effects for your movies.

Have just switched to Libre but also occasionally use Open Office. Microsoft Office was installed on my PC but since finding OO and Libre, I've deleted it. Total waste of money these days.
Of the two options relevant to this upload, I find Libre Writer much easier with only a couple of functions which aren't quite as intuitive. (eg: in Open Office you can easily drag upper, lower and side margins to adjust the text area for a document. In Libre you seem to have to do with by adjusting them manually using Edit / Page / Margins. Slightly more cumbersome, but no great problem. You can also download the full Libre manuals in 3 forms and/or you can download individual chapters.
All-in-all, Libre is proving the best option for me. You can also save in ..doc, .docx or rtf formats by default.

For screen recording and live streaming I use Nvidia Share play. If you have an Nvidia graphics card on your PC this is a great option. There is no lag or performance decrease because it's integrated into the card and not an external program. you can capture up to 4k resolution and it's totally free. Just download the GeForce Exerience suite from Nvidia.

Thank you so much +TechGumbo .
You saved me a bit of a dilemma when you showed Shotcut and where it says the get it from Microsoft label
meaning that the app is now also available in the Windows App Store like I cannot say thank you enough
because of all of these dilemmas that have been coming up about the moving to Windows 10 out there even though I am using Windows 10 .
The good news being that so far those dilemmas are shrinking quite a bit . It's not at zero yet but it's getting better than it was .

If I were you, I’ld replace virtual box with Qemu. Qemu supports more architectures and is generally lighter weight and more simply to configure than virtual box. The only real problem is that it is less new user friendly than virtual box. This can be fixed with something like virtual-manager though.
