As a new Rugby fan, this IS the truest statement. I noticed that from the first few games I watched. They treat the ref as if they're their dad and not as if they are an enemy. The Rugby refs are no nonsense, with a "I'll turn this car around" type demeanor

True. Rugby people can teach all other sports many things. There are no victims, we achieve together or we fail together. Unless the refereeing is absolutely blatantly wrong, blatantly one way, best thing is to stop using the referee-excuse.

Canada deserve praise for how they played and stuck to the task. I love the fact that they didn't whine and blame it on the referee either. England played slightly below average but, in the end, deserved the victory. The Abby Dow try was worthy of a British Lions match. Superb.

What Canada did was immense but they should have proper financial support from their union. Too much underinvestment in women's sports needs to change. This is not an example of how competitive an amature team can be rather a question of just how much could they achieve if they had the proper support.

Most rugby managers/captains keep their mouth shut when such things happen, probably because they know they will probably come up against this referee again, and don’t want to antagonise him/her. The thing is, sometimes the ref does actually cost a team the game through a bad call. Each ref enforces rules slightly differently just from one ref to the next. Complaining about the ref shouldn't be the go to for why a team lost, but we should also be allowed to call a spade a spade

  • @russs7574

During the Penguins' run to the Stanley Cup in 1991, they lost a game in the playoffs to Boston when the Bruins benefitted from a ticky-tack penalty call late in the game, scored on the power play to tie the score and won in overtime. When a reporter asked him about the officiating after the game, Coach Bob Johnson said, "That loss is on us for putting ourselves in a position where one call can decide the game."
You know Johnson was thoroughly pissed off at the call (yes, it was a penalty, but NHL referees generally "put their whistles away" during the last 10 minutes or so of a playoff game), but he made the decision to put his emotions aside and respond with grace and dignity. That's usually the wisest course to take.
I remember another time in the 80's when the Steelers beat the Bengals when Cincy got flagged three times on what would have been a final drive that would have either tied or won the game. When Bengals Coach Sam Wyche was asked about the calls costing him the game, he said, "Ed Hochuli (the referee) didn't throw four picks. We did that."

Perhaps now this will educate the uneducated and unadulterated gobdaws that BASH the referee whenever their team loses a game. It happens every single game, and it's time people learned to zip it. If a coach and captain can praise the referee, so should you.

Or perhaps it is a professional sport, not a morality tale.. everyone is in it for the cash..and they have cameras everywhere, and it should be virtually impossible for them to make terrible decisions.
      And yet...

💯 if you can’t win based of ref decisions then you need to tighten your discipline. The ref is also human and like a player makes mistakes. It’s the players job to mitigate errors and help the ref make good decisions. It’s called game management and the Captains and players should learn to manage the game not just play it.
