I'm really enjoying these analyses from the perspective of a student of history and a fiction writer. It really helps to have some proportion and nuance on what modern and not so modern weapons/counters can do.
Thank you so much for the lovely video and the science behind it. These science videos are just bloody marvelous, and every mission planner should watch them! The semi-conductor industry is in a worldwide recession and being my hours at work have been cut to 3 nights a week I am having to use the funds I set aside for a DCS computer and hardware just to survive so I am watching as many reaper videos as I can and trying to learn everything I can.
I have also done some tests and I have discovered that the guided AAA have code issues. I tested all short Air defences against a Jsow and the most do not react. The ones with missiles work well. The guided cannons are not able to detect low speed targets, except the SA19 ones (in some cases).
Great videos. You guys do an amazing job at this and informative on the different military equipment. Keep up the great job and I wish y'all luck on everything y'all do. Hello from Texas USA
After watching this, I'm pretty sure that RU SHORAD are great at the DCS but in real life we have seen it fail, the "Antonovsky" bridge attack on YT shows 2 Pansir-S1 (i guess, might be S2 or SM) trying to intercept HIMARS rockets, M31 GMLRS and only managed to hit one of 12. Few weeks latter the Pontoon Bridge near "Antonovsky" was hit too, the SHORAD and Point defense is pretty capable but not as perfect in DSC. I think you should have another try with BM-21 Grads together with HIMARS, as in is known to be a smart tactic by AFU against Russia.
In reality... Basic versions of ZSU and OSA are probably spot on. Extremely unlikely to hit smth like this. There are modernized versions, but numbers are low and simply no data... Tunguska is capable of shooting this down. It can hit air-to-ground missile or bomb before it reaches the target, maybe the speed of the rocket is the issue here, but should be able to, at least partially. Tor has proven to be the most efficient system so far, even from Ukraine reports. That thing simply annihilates anything within its range, especially modern versions. Pantsir... Well, it struggles in reality. Looks great on paper, but its track record is far from impressive so far...
Pantsir has had some serious teething problems, from what I've heard it's software related, which makes sense since it's tracking system is essentially a hybrid of Sa19's command guidance and Sa15's radar guidance.
Ukraine apparently uses diversionary rockets from Hurricanes, usually 12 HIMARS rockets and 16 Hurricane Rockets in one salvo, which explains why the Buk-M3 has worked with its six channels. But you need six of them, with one tracking RADAR each. You'd probably need at least x9 Pantsir for the same pk.
Maybe there should be a kind of MIRV style initial attack missile, when it detects enemy radar tracking the one big missile becomes 4 smaller missiles.
Cap I have a reenactment I wonder if y’all can do, sometime ago I watched a Vietnam documentary where 2 prop sky raiders were on a surface attack mission when they come across 2 migs, one of the sky raiders got into a dogfight and and gunned down a mig head on which marked on of the very first prop plane win vs a jet engine fighter.
Actually, that kill was the last of the prop vs. jet fights where the prop won. There were several jets shot down by propeller aircraft during WWII, and also in the Korean conflict.
My only issue is that, that is not the flight profile of any of our HIMARS or MLRS launched systems…they go far, far higher and and well, the whole missile doesn’t come down the SDB is just a different variant. Made out of existing parts/systems we had, to achieve an essentially off the shelf solution of proven systems already used, to get more range out of the old boosters, with a PGM payload, that is…well small, cause it hits what it needs. Just look up US HIMARS launches here on YT…if they went much higher than they do. Then you’d consider them a full up tactical ballistic missile, so they got gravity on their side. And a small, fast moving, unpowered, low observable payload load coming in fast. Is uhh, vastly different than what’s modeled in the game.
Ya left out one thing,...... the Pantsir may have problems with the high angle of attack the first ones had problems with,...... all in the interest of completeness don'cha know?!?! Love yer videos, and I watch on YT and Rumble.
You're not dumb, ED's code is. Somehow glide bombs are missiles and a bomb the size of a bus is undetectable on radar. Really hope they get around to fixing all that.
Another nice mod from CH! @CH - can you make a mod for Raytheon's ADM-160 MALD please? @Grim Reapers - you will want this for future carrier group battle scenarios. ;)
If you wanted to more accurately replicate how the HIMARS is used in Ukraine, you should have one HIMARS firing among 2-3 much cheaper "dumb" rocket artillery systems. The massed rocket fire helps suppress and take out the general area targets (while most importantly swarming the SHORADs, which aren't easily able to differentiate between the two types of rockets in time), while the HIMARS rocket(s) hopefully slip by and strike the priority targets.
Have you folks thought about using the Himars to overwhelm Sam sites to cover a strike package. Probably not completely doable do to servers potentially crashing. Is it a viable tactic or more or less could it be viable?
From my understanding of SAM systems, it would be very viable. SAMs, generally, do not discriminate between Surface-to-surface and air-to-surface weapons. There is no difference between 100 AGMs and 50 AGMs + 50 Ground Launched projectiles. If you have, say, 8 S-300 launchers working area denial and maybe 6-10 SHORAD systems that can assist. There maybe is a total of 60 threats that can be engaged. That's only 10 HIMARS salvos for GMLRS. Or you could do 5-6 GMLRS salvos and some F-35s loaded with JDAMs.
4:40 As I recall, the Shilka is ineffective against mach 2 aircraft. The missiles, I don't know. 12:15 You might have better luck by replacing the himars with airplanes at the same speeds.
@@scar00059 If I recall correctly, there was no US AAA missile system prior to 1990s Patriot that could successfully intercept supersonic missiles (SCUDS attacking Israeli cities) either, so it's no surprise the Russian systems all failed in this video. Shooting supersonic, tiny missiles is tough.
" I'm afraid we are giving away too much information now..." C'mon Cap, it is just DCS. I know it is quite a good sim but everybody has access to COMMAND Modern Ops and some even have access to the professional edition that is actually used by militaries to train officers. COMMAND has MUCH better weapon and sensor simulation so all these scenarios have already been tested using better simulation technology. Now, that's not to say Command doesn't have it's flaws but in comparison, DCS is like war thunder.
In reality 30 fully-armed Leopards or Abrams wouldn't carry enough rounds to take care of 3000 targets - even if they sat there waiting to be hit. Come on, 3000/30 isn't difficult! Is there a modern MBT in existence that can carry a hundred rounds? It's actually rare for a tank in operation to have a full loadout of rounds because you wouldn't be expected to be firing 40 odd rounds during a mission - and even if they did, the logistics of keeping 30 tanks fed with 40 rounds per mission would be difficult in real life.
I would like to see a video featuring US F-35s flying in from Poland and doing ground attack missions in advance of a Ukranian attack. Would the Russian be able to see them and know that they are F-35s if the planes get close enough to be effective with whatever the US state of the art munitions for this are.
Ground RADAR installations would be able to "see" F-35 as well as any other plane - it's just the RCS is smaller - so you won't know whether it's something like a small cruise missile or a plane unless the thing is manoeuvring like one or the other.
@@grimreapers I have watched them all! I enjoy the ones which are most relevant to the actual war and which are most plausible - the most. I think if I were Biden, I would send in a large flight of stealth air craft to lay waste to Russian defense lines and prepare the way for a Ukranian counter attack towards Melitopol to insure its success, then just deny it. I wonder what the actual make up of such an attack would be, would it work and what evidence would the Russians have that it was a US strike. Maybe stealth bombers would shoot stealth cruise missiles as well?
Why is the Glide Bomb only coming in from a single attack vector?/! I would think its ability to Glide also allows it to maneuver and come in on various trajectories overwhelming the likelihood of a coordinated defense shoot down...
@@ГеоргийМурзич But you have SIX of them in the air at the same time and only THREE defense systems to guard against them! Always assuming that only ONE HiMAR launcher is being used to pound a high-priority target...
@@michaelflower6172 here's an example of Pantsir S1 intercept, shot down 4 out of 6 missiles (HIMARS?) ruclips.net/video/DSrxaSwx45I/видео.html Pantsir won't have problems detecting them even if all 6 glide bombs would fly from different directions
I'd love to see how Western SHORADS though the ages would handle similar scenarios (maybe Vs Soviet MLRS): 🇬🇧Starstreak, Rapier and Sky Sabre. 🇨🇦ADATS 🇺🇲 Avenger, Chaparral (if that counts) 🇩🇪 Gepard 🇨🇵 Crotale, Roland 🇸🇪 RBS-70 I'm sure there's more
The title should be "Which Russian SHORAD SAMs does DCS think can shoot down US-supplied M142 HIMARS Rockets?" Because the real answer is none of them.
The Buk-M3 is the only way Russia has been able to take down HIMARS rockets, if you can believe DPR: "This is achieved by equipping 9M317MA anti-aircraft missiles with active radar homing heads of the Slanets family and having a 6-channel target designation radar on each of the six battery firing systems. In comparison, one S-300PM2 division can simultaneously intercept no more than six enemy targets, which is due to the presence of only one 30N6E target illumination radar and the semi-active guidance of 48N6E2 anti-aircraft missiles, which requires continuous illumination of the intercepted object until the moment the radar fuse is activated. Consequently, only Buk-M3 complexes are capable of simultaneously intercepting 28 incoming rockets during a massed classic attack by Ukrainian Armed Forces forces equipped with two HIMARS installations and diversionary 'Hurricanes'. Long-range S-400 and S-350 Vityaz air defence systems are both equipped with super-manoeuvrable 9M96D/DM anti-aircraft guided missiles with active radar seekers from the same Slanets family. Having an autonomous receiving-transmitting path that enables the “fire-and-forget” mode, these homing heads conduct autonomous target acquisition, relieving the target channel and firing performance of the 92N6E and 50N6A illumination/target designation radars and freeing up updating channels for processing new targets. Consequently, the firepower of the S-400 and Vityaz makes it able to counter huge M31A1 shell attacks. Another system capable of intercepting HIMARS projectiles is the S-350 Vityaz air defence systems but are in limited numbers and cannot be deployed enmasse in the battle field.”
Buk m2/m3 and pantsirs are extremely effective against himars. Lots of interception videos, but not on biased youtube unfortunately. Telegram is the only uncensored source.
Look up HIMARS, 2008, camp bastion, Afghanistan, you’ll see a USMC, HIMARS unit launching, those assholes always woke us up as we were trying to sleep, lol. Definitely wakes you up, fast, when they are being shot off close to where you are a couple hundred meters or so at the closest. From where you are sleeping, one hell of a wake up call, lol.
Everybody a bit scared of information set out. Even the the experts and utuper who are are studying the war. The Since this war started. But anyone could be watching. The Indians might be watching, thinking am not buying that. Thanks for the information . Lol.. but the chances are what. Million to 1, or more. Good show. 👍😊
I know that Pantsir systems guarded the bridge in Kherson which GMLRS took out so the system may be over modelled. Maybe the Russians lied about it’s capabilities! Fascinating stuff, and very topical. I’m looking at the Lua coding for CH’s Swedish mods. Going to try and get back into programming, been doing it on and off for fifty years.
Believe it or not, all those Kherson Bridges were still usable when the Russian withdrew from the West Bank. I don't know who keeps telling you they were 'taken out'.
Suggestion. Ukrainian calvary raid thru Crimea to capture the Crimean bridge using the new leopard and challenger tanks. Cutting off russian supply line and forcing surrender of russian forces in crimea. Similar to task force smith in korea….who ran a calvary raid from the pusan perimeter to inchon to link up,with mcarthurs invasion force.
I feel so much better when my house is utterly destroyed with only one missile/bomb. I'm still dead but it's a more peaceful death and my family might find a toe or finger they can bury.
Russian air defense proved entirely ineffective in defending a small number of stationary strategic objectives during the Kherson counteroffensive. Either they decided deploying SHORAD to defend the two major bridges in the region was not worthwhile (which is exceedingly hard to believe) or their systems were shockingly ineffective at countering HIMARs. Regardless, it seems highly unlikely that Pantsir systems in the field enjoy the same ~80% PK against GLMRS that they show in DCS.
@@grimreapers You're not simulating anything - DCS doesn't simulate regardless of the title - it a series of triggers, scripts and randomizers. It's a fabulous game - but don't let us get too excited with words like "simulation"!
Ukraine fired Himars at Belgorod many time , we have many Himars intercepted and some days more than 24 M142 intercepted. The pantsir is verry good systeme i didn't expect them to intercept many Himars
Of course they did. They evacuated Snake Island and let the Kherson bridge be destroyed in a heavily defended part of the area out of charity. They didn't want to hurt the Ukrainian's feeling by intercepting all their HIMARs rounds. The Russians are nice like that.
@@LondonSteveLee because interceptors are expensive and don't grow on trees, keeping defenders supplied wasn't worth a spit of land that offered no tactical value.
What would it be like in real life? Probably a lot worse given the training levels of the average russian soldier now and level of equipment maintenance.
Not only that. There aren’t any targets worthwhile to be babysat by 4 pantsir 24/7 with search radars running 24/7. The PK of the pantsir gets a lot worse when it has to travel 10+ miles to intercept.
They've become increasingly idiot proof. For instance the SA19 has a feature where the turret does the tracking on its own, pantsir is probably almost like a video game.
I think you guys are very misinformed about the training of the average Russian soldier. There's not an army on the planet that can take on and win against Russia. Get your news from independent news sources, and you'll learn the truth about what's happening in Ukraine. Or, just keep on believing what Biden telling you.
Lol, gotta say, can’t say no way the wannabe Soviets would use those systems. You do know they are bringing out T55 and T54’s right? Those are a decade or older when they were being developed than the shilka, they are at at the very end of what they can’t sustain, and they don’t have th numbers of units. Or munitions they claim, or else every single launch fro the HIMARS wouldn’t be getting through, and wrecking them. While was talking shit some would say earlier, about how the game doesn’t model HIMARS accurately enough, I have no data, or techinical specs on what they actually do, but I can tell you, from seeing them launched, in person in Iraq and Afghanistan, and many videos, here on YT, so public, they have a ballistic approach, not the cruise missile type flight, shown here…and from what I did, and the systems and sensors we had, yeah, they don’t look like that coming down onto target. Would it make a difference, clearly, as something about how they work. How Russias air defense is supposed to work/how they actually do. HIMARS clearly beats them, in reality. Overall. Even when the US, with our vast resources and supporting, combined arms aren’t being used. Now, if Russias shit worked perfectly, and their guys were completely on top of it, at the peak of their game, woukd they stop most, or maybe even all of a tiny launch like that, some, they could probably stop, of an exceptional crew, who fully maintained their equipment, were highly trained and motivated, then sure, their equipment of in peak condition, with the best crews could stop most, maybe all, of a paltry 6 missile launch, more like what Ukraine is doing as far as numbers, cause they don’t/can’t make them, any part of them. Nor do they have stockpiles of them. Unless it’s what we(western, Nato) give them. And sure HIMARS are great, insanely effective and probably our cheapest longer range system…but shit still isn’t cheap. And every time ukraine fires them, they kill the target, and no one on either side officially claims, in a viable way that they stopped any, let alone most of them. And the fact is. Even if they stop one or two. Or three, 5, out 6, of that 6th gets through. And kills the target. Doesn’t matter how many they stopped, as long as we keep giving the munitions for the systems. As one getting through is all it takes, cause they will go through a jormal house sized window. At max range, everyone knows that by now, lol, if one makes it through, the intended target is dead. But they have never claimed, and had evidence to back up when they (Russians) said they shot them down, that is actually true. Sure I’m willing to bet their best crews and equipment tagged some of them, but they never stopped a single salvo. Not a whole on. And that’s why we keep sending them, and they keep being used, they simply work, every time, and kill the target in a handful of missiles launched. I’m sore later on down the line, like decades, many decades later on, it’ll come out that shot down 1-3, or even 4/5 of them launched, at times. But, even 80 percent don’t work when that last 20% kills the target. And no pillows to lose, have to recover, or be taken prisoner, so, ok, shoot them down here and there, no public scandal, or negotiations to get a POW back. All they did was kill a semi expensive missile/really warhead, as, as long as the full launcher is intact, they are cheap, for our weapons to launch, lol. Far cheaper than even the UH-1N and AH-1W’s I worked on, half of our aircraft first flew and fought in early to mid vietnam. The actual airframe I worked on, and he’ll most of the panels. Of the body, some of the systems in it. And I worked on them 2006-2010 in my unit, was in a bit over a year before that, all the training to get to where I needed to be, so j could do that. And learn from the older guys who actually been doing it. Not just school houses. Even those were about 10 million usd a pop/more for one or the other, a piece, lol. And they first fought in Vietnam, still working being used.
This is all fascinating for the Armchair General brigade.. but the Russians HAVE these systems. And the HIMARS are happily rodgering the Russian troops in real life on a daily basis. - and Ukraine doesnt have an infinite supply available to saturate on every attack So either all of these weapon systems are non operational or they are poorly maintained and crewed (Which going by the incompetence of the Russian standing army, is highly likely).
@@jetfighter200 bit like the missile attacks on the rest of the black sea fleet that failed misserably whilst Ukraine got "incredibly lucky" with Moskova...? If their systems are so great, why are they nowhere near winning after 12 months, and so desperate for troops they recruit from Prisons? Seriously it must get boring at Lubtyanka Square sitting there coming up with thiese jokes.
They have shot down some missiles but the Ukrainians send barrages with multiple HIMARS launchers to overwhelm the SAMs, also they use Uragans/Smerchs ij support to further saturate the radar picture. Also the HARMs in the mix makes it difficult

Hi John.
I have also done some tests and I have discovered that the guided AAA have code issues. I tested all short Air defences against a Jsow and the most do not react.

The guided cannons are not able to detect low speed targets, except the SA19 ones (in some cases).

After watching this, I'm pretty sure that RU SHORAD are great at the DCS but in real life we have seen it fail, the "Antonovsky" bridge attack on YT shows 2 Pansir-S1 (i guess, might be S2 or SM)
trying to intercept HIMARS rockets, M31 GMLRS and only managed to hit one of 12.

Pantsir S1 is problematic, later versions are doing good against Ukrainian GMLRS many times a day.
It’s a GREAT DAY!

Personally think that the GLSDB would be maneuvering a bit more than bee lining to the target. could that be programed into the game?
I think it applies to both types of bombs.
Agreed, would love to but we can't get access to terminal manouvering yet :(
The himars and glider bombs will change its flight paths en route, making them very difficult 😳

@@grimreapers Thanks CAP! *Salutes him*
If you wanted to more accurately replicate how the HIMARS is used in Ukraine, you should have one HIMARS firing among 2-3 much cheaper "dumb" rocket artillery systems. The massed rocket fire helps suppress and take out the general area targets (while most importantly swarming the SHORADs, which aren't easily able to differentiate between the two types of rockets in time), while the HIMARS rocket(s) hopefully slip by and strike the priority targets.
Interesting simulation! But what about cost? How many missiles can afford to fire to stop one rocket/glidebomb?
It probably depends on what the target is.
Have you folks thought about using the Himars to overwhelm Sam sites to cover a strike package. Probably not completely doable do to servers potentially crashing. Is it a viable tactic or more or less could it be viable?
Cool
A plane would be easier, but it’s also far larger
You are right. However the AAA are not well coded to intercept missiles as should be. I tested and a Gepard is not able to intercept a gliding jsow.
@@preserveourpbfs7128 Yes, that is exactly why it would be easier. That's what I meant.
@@scar00059
If I recall correctly, there was no US AAA missile system prior to 1990s Patriot that could successfully intercept supersonic missiles (SCUDS attacking Israeli cities) either, so it's no surprise the Russian systems all failed in this video. Shooting supersonic, tiny missiles is tough.
" I'm afraid we are giving away too much information now..."
C'mon Cap, it is just DCS.

Indeed, DCS is a game - it's miles from being a simulation.

yeh, whoopsy.
Try 30 Leopard or Abrams tanks against 3000 T54/55 tanks.
Would love to but the tech is not in place to supoprt such a big battle.
Can the sldb do a manuvoeor while reaching the target. They can theoretically do it. So as not to come from same direction

We've done a few similar to this, take a look if you get a chance: ruclips.net/p/PL3kOAM2N1YJeavSkqltNNwA9Q2nNOW643
These are Rockets
The air defence can’t kill Rockets because they are not have a warhead
The title should be "Which Russian SHORAD SAMs does DCS think can shoot down US-supplied M142 HIMARS Rockets?" Because the real answer is none of them.
Ah, but they have been shot down.

I doubt those HIMARs installations would have any anti-missile defence?
Russian air defense proved entirely ineffective in defending a small number of stationary strategic objectives during the Kherson counteroffensive. Either they decided deploying SHORAD to defend the two major bridges in the region was not worthwhile (which is exceedingly hard to believe) or their systems were shockingly ineffective at countering HIMARs. Regardless, it seems highly unlikely that Pantsir systems in the field enjoy the same ~80% PK against GLMRS that they show in DCS.
Roger, it's prudent to point out that we are simulating a "perfect scenario" for the defender.
@@grimreapers You're not simulating anything - DCS doesn't simulate regardless of the title - it a series of triggers, scripts and randomizers. It's a fabulous game - but don't let us get too excited with words like "simulation"!
the ukrainian tactic was to fire cheap MLRS rockets along with HIMARS rockets to overwhelm radars.
Yes, must give Ivan and Boris a few hours notice to make sure they're sober enough to operate the equipment!
You forgot the Vodka variable!

Wow CH I hope you are NATO

This is all fascinating for the Armchair General brigade.. but the Russians HAVE these systems. And the HIMARS are happily rodgering the Russian troops in real life on a daily basis. - and Ukraine doesnt have an infinite supply available to saturate on every attack So either all of these weapon systems are non operational or they are poorly maintained and crewed (Which going by the incompetence of the Russian standing army, is highly likely).
