    The whole caucus thing makes no sense. The person with the most votes should win - forget delegates. Certain states shouldn’t “matter” more than others. How is it that “American Idol” has a more coherent voting system than the US has for deciding who runs the country?

    • @rvdb7363
      @rvdb7363 4 года назад +9

      The whole American election system makes no sense. In the past 20 years there were 2 candidates who had more votes, but lost the election. All because of the electoral college. The USA isn't a direct democracy where it comes to the presidency. You vote for the people that vote for the president.
      Another weird aspect of the American system: a senators from California represents 930.000 people, while a North Dakota senator represents just 14.000 constituents.
      The small states have an advantage in the current political system.

    • @Artyomthewalrus
      @Artyomthewalrus 4 года назад

      It's the way most democracies work. You want to have someone from your riding to champion your causes in the house. It would also be unfair if you win your riding in a landslide victory, but the opposition gets that seat. What are we supposed to do? Go by popular vote and let the parties pick the candidates that they feel should be in the house? I can see the argument that these caucuses should be a popular vote, but I don't see an easy workaround for the actual election to have local representation. It's a flaw in democracy, but a necessary one. Improvements should certainly be made to the election system, but I don't see a move to a popular vote being the answer.

      Because america is not a single country at the time it began. It is a collection of separate states and if direct democracy was applied the small states would rather ally with a european country than join the us. Thats why they inflate their importance. Now its not that important to give priority but this is the basis of republicans power that would be gone with direct democracy

    • @marjoriepickard2828
      @marjoriepickard2828 4 года назад +2

      @@rvdb7363 That is the basis of the Senate. Every state has two senators, no matter the size or population. The number of congresspeople in the house is dependent on population. The reason for the two senators is because small states like Rhode Island refused to ratify the Constitution without giving provisions to protect smaller states from being bulldozed by larger ones. This compromise works pretty well in Congress because you have the two branches. It doesn't work very well when voting for a president.

Countries that offer free college didn't go from crippling college debt with companies making major profits off student loans one day to shutting down all college loan companies and providing free college the next. That direct path doesn't work. Pete is one of the only candidates to understand the middle steps that some of the other candidates like to gloss over. Like free community college/trade schools. Or free college for people of a certain level of wealth. He is still headed towards the end results, but his policies make more sense for where we are.
      I absolutely also support Warren and Bernie. I would love to live in the type of progressive country they are describing. I am super liberal. I know that most people are not as liberal as I am, Trump absolutely cannot win again for the country's future, and things don't change overnight.

      Sooooo...
      The long and short of it is that the former communications director for the South Bend Police Departmen discovered racial remarks from certain officers and detectives on recordings of 911 and front desk calls and brought this information to Chief Boykins. Boykins asked the communications director to back up some of these recordings as potential evidence and confronted some of the officers in question. As a result, the officers decided to make a federal complaint about Chief Boykins. Soon after the complaint, Buttigieg fired both the communications director and the Chief without listening to any of the recorded evidence. Despite calls for Buttigieg to publically release the recordings, the recordings were never released.

      For those who support Pete, this is because when he has a milquetoast Healthcare plan, receives donations from a bunch of billionaires, gave money to the developers of the app that *surprise surprise* crashed during the Iowa Caucus (a group called "SHADOW" of all things) and a record of institutionalized racism within his own town when he was the Mayor (that keep in mind, everyone refers to him as Major Pete), it doesn't take a genius to realize that him being gay has absolutely Zero Bearing on anything anymore.
      There's a reason why there are only 2 candidates that really matter in this race. Unfortunately Andrew Yang doesn't have enough support but his ideas are worth looking into and adopting when the world moves closer to automation. Bernie seems like the only candidate worth voting for. It's that simple.

      Absolutely not. He's establishment fodder, one of a dozen candidates picked by the dnc funders to throw off voters from Sanders campaign. They throw out food lin all shapes and sizes, colors, sexuality, and they see what sticks and then they run with that. The goal is anything but Bernie. That was literally a title of a leaked dnc memo btw. The most grotesque thing about this particular interaction is that he doesn't deserve to be on that stage. Bernie won Iowa, not Pete. Petes campaign released a victory speech when nobody knew the outcome yet. That's literally 2000 all over again, like when bush declared victory before Florida when actually Al Gore won that presidency. And the even dirtier thing about that is the Buttigieg campaign has ties to the dark money corporate pac funded app service that was used to tally votes and discrepancies have been flooding in. The DNC is not only complicit with that obvious conflict of intrest, they're co-conspirators! It feels like reading an Orwellian horror, but i promise you its real. Im no conspiracy guy either, this is just getting to be insane at this point. We all know what tv time like this does for a campaign, we watched Trump be elected... the while point of the Iowa caucuses is to give insight into the mid ground of the nations politics this go around and removing Bernie from the published victory speech process, the quite literally from headlines, from the press junkets and tv appearances. This is all in an attempt to undercut hus success and quite honestly it does have a huge impact. We're being cheated out of our democracy. And all of us should be outraged over it. Pitchforks and torches outraged. Because if we let this go on, we won't have any freedoms left. It's ask free reign from there. Your vote is the crux of your freedom. Our forefathers faught for that. This is just gross. Let’s focus on his sexuality and gloss over the fact that he has more billionaires donors/ties than the other candidates. Let’s gloss over his lack of appealing policy proposals and his slimy, typical politician wishy-washiness. Let’s gloss over the fact that he seriously lacks any broad support from minority groups in this country. Let’s gloss over the fact that he lost the popular vote (which I thought was all that matters to Democrats). Let’s ignore the fact that if the Dems pull the same shit they did in 2016 and try to prop this guy up as their puppet, they will lose to Trump for sure.

    So I've paused 2 minutes in. Stephen's point here is valid. 6 months after our last Scottish elections (not UK), I learned *_from a New York Times article_* that apparently Scotland has "The gayest Parliament in the world."
    Didn't come out (ha ha, not intentional) during any campaigning - although our campaigns aren't personal - & *nobody cares.* So getting to that point *would* be a pretty damn remarkable thing for Americans.
    (Although I did see some idiot woman who learned he was gay _after_ she voted for him & asked if she could take her vote back. This is why politics should be about *policies* - but the fact she didn't know means that wasn't the headline news about him, so... win??)
    Come on, self-declared 'land of the free' 'indivisible' 'united' & 'all equal' - *prove* to the world you have _anything_ supporting all your claims. We're really rooting for you to prove it. ✌🏼

      I'm actually in the US right now, so I kinda know what's going on. (That's sarcasm. The entire world knows.)
      'Self-declared' & 'prove _anything_ that supports it' must have been too subtle.
      Nobody else ever believed those things, only the Americans with no worldly awareness (no disrespect to those of you who possess some). The world is now watching you spiral while still declaring your superiority.
      I personally don't know anyone who believes it - but those are not the loudest voices.

In fact Hillary won the popular vote by 2,868,686 million: totals were 62,984,828 for Trump to 65,853,514 for Hillary. As Trump himself said, the election was rigged, as documented and described in the Netflix documentary The Great Hack. 2016 was a fluke in American.
