Might be a good idea to add tape to the sides of the foam board to stop all the little pieces of foam from falling off each time you open the attic door and push up that hatch. Good video to show another option other than an attic door radiant barrier tent.

I originally built a box for my attic stairs. I ended up buying a thermal attic stair tent ($35) this year just because it was more convenient to use to enter and exit my attic. I do encourage anyone using a home built box or store bought tent to make sure as Taddy did, to seal up all seams and cracks around the opening before installing. BTW the tent seems to be working as well as the box that I had originally built a few years ago. We'll see how well it performs as the summer temperatures rise over the next few months. So far the IR thermometer is saying in 80 degree heat that it is working as intended.

I try to express this to homeowners all the time the attic doors are usually 99 percent always located right next to the thermostat and are usually always leaking heat due to the lack of insulation. which will keep your thermostat from satisfying. I fix this issue all the time by installing an attic door cover that's insulated and they say the see the difference instantly.

I’ve seen a lot of people just make a box out of foam board that fits inside the existing frame so there is still a flat transition for storage in the attic. This works though. Whatever works for your situation.

If you had extended the "weights" all the way to the edge, you would not put as much warping/ drooping pressure on the foam board. Good vid, thanks.

#giveaway - All great tips! When I lived in MA I had to do some of these tips on my new home as it aged. Now I'm in VA, a milder climate and not as critical but still proper maintenance is essential. Thanks Taddy!

It’s time Tad!!! Buy a blower door and duct tightness tester!! I know you thought about it! You have a huge following. You can know for sure what your infiltration and duct tightness actually is. Plus do a proper load calculation!!! It will be great content!

15 % heat loss is walls / widows ..60% is ceiling or Attic Insulaiton need that done in hot zones as well as cold zones ...vent fans bathroom dryer and range hood vent to exterior ... have Baffels Installed to hold the insulation back from the awning vents ...cooling happens when there is air flow over the insulation and roof line ... soffit vents !! ... In Florida Min insulation is R-30 ... my daughters remodeled house which she purchaed ..the attic had really nothing in it ...installed blown in insulaiton non fiberglass ..Cellulose tends to have better heat insulaiton properites over fiberglass ..we will see here in the east coast of Floriday just above Orlando ... used and attic insulation zip cover for the trap door entrance ...

HVAC over size it to make more $$$$ and the biggest problem leakage mean all the registers, dusts aren't seal very well. Under the CA code you are allow 15% leakage and that way to much. Most HVAC companies have over 15% leakage in the system they install.
