  • We have both of Toyo's top All-Terrain tyres in the studio for a comparison. The AT2 and the all new AT3..
Take a journey with us, as we waffle around the features and designs of these tyres. We might even make up a few new words like "Outdenting".
If you have your own experiences with these tyres, we'd love to hear them. Drop a review at www.tyrereview.com.au or simply jump in the comments below and we'll do our best to get back to you. Jared loves a good tyre yarn!! Go on, start a yarn.

I am in the US. I had a set of AT3's on a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 crew cab. The AT3 is an awesome tire. I do a lot of highway driving and light off road on the farm.
The AT3 performed flawlessly in wet weather conditions from light rain to standing water on the highway.
Off highway, they performed better than some actual mud tires I have used. Not a super swamped by any means, but I never got stuck in light mud.
No worries going through winter conditions with light ice/snow.
The tires had approximately 20k on them when I sold the truck and were still better than 75% tread. Mind you, I rotated the tires at every oil change. Around 6000 miles.
I had no issues with excessive road noise.
One thing I really liked was the ease of balancing the tires. The heaviest weight was .5 ounce on one tire. The other 3 were .25 ounce each.
I would definitely put another set on my next truck without hesitation.

I bought Toyo Open Country AT2 several years ago. Having tried numerous other brands over the years, some that promised to be puncture proof and give 70k+ wear but failed miserably in both departments. I bought the Toyos on the recommendation of a friend. I am so glad I listened to him. My Toyos have just clocked over 72,000 km. I am an avid hunter and go places where others don't go, meaning quite often there are no roads. I have not had one puncture and would probably be able to get another 5k out of my tyres, but will change them today as I am headed for another adventure in the high country. I am replacing them with new Toyos today. If my tyre people have them I will give the 3 s ago but would be more than happy with another set of 2s.

I'm intrigued - did you get the AT3s - if so, how are they going?? I have the AT2s at about 60,000 km and am exceedingly happy with them - but I'm trying to decide whether to go for the AT3s next time.

The AT2 were the best tires I ever owned in my 47 years of driving! They performed as promised 110%. But... I recently bought the AT3's and Im disappointed, they are noisier and do not stick to warmer ice or wet snow as good as the AT2 . I will say thought that the AT3's are still very good tires, next best I've owned second only to the Toyo Open Country AT2.

Review from Canada: Put 4 of the AT2's on Jeep Liberty 8 years ago! Best tires I have ever bought, no other has stood up like these. Also noticed a massive improvement in Fuel mileage. Came highly recommended fr a Toyota Tacoma driver & I have also been suggesting them wherever appropriate. Both of us drive city, hiway, gravel and light off-road - all year round. Not as great on ice as a winter tire when we are -30, but still a stellar buy. Curious about the AT3 tho... finally thinking about replacing but holding off as these are VERY difficult to get here now.

Going to pull the trigger on some AT3s soon for my 16 lexus GX and probably in an LT version not the passenger rated sidewalls. While Im adding weight im going to be adding durability and tread depth with the LT tire.
I had a set of 35 inch AT2 extremes on my 11' Raptor about 7 years back now. I found those to be phenomenal on the 6200 pound girl year round. 130kph gravel road skids, some rocks and light mud and dirt and they did great. Comfortable and quiet enough for long road trips and they wore great at around 36 psi for the street. Did quite well in our harsh and long cold Canadian winters near the rockies as well. I wish I could get a set of AT2s for the Lexus, but general consensus on the 3s is they do every job a little better for the most part. Considering theyre a true A/T, they seem to be a better tire then even a lot of the good hybrids and cheaper M/Ts

Went threw some heavy ugly deep ruts & mud not to long ago. Was very impressed with how good they performed without lowering psi in the tires, just kept digging & moving threw it.

I’ve had 3 sets of AT2’s on my Chevy Silverado and consistently got 50K of even wear, and the tire never got noisy. Like some others said the AT2 was not a great wet weather tire. I now have approx 18K on a set of AT3’s. The wear is good, the wet handling is much better than the AT2, but the AT3 is a much noisier tire. To the point I’m disappointed, and miss the AT2 for that reason. At this point I’m not sure I’d put another set on in the future? I’ve been a loyal Toyo user, and maybe as the tire wears I will change my mind and want another set of AT3’s? But if someone asked me today, I’d tell them the biggest downside of the 3, vs the 2 is tire noise.

Hey I really appreciate you sharing your experience. I'm thinking seriously about trying the AT3s but looking at the tread design was concerned they might be noticeably noisier than the AT2s. Having read your comments, I'm thinking I might stay with the AT2s.

    • @toddcunningham2410
      @toddcunningham2410 3 месяца назад

After approx another 10K miles, the AT3 are still noisier than the AT2’s ever were. Tire wear is still good, nice & even. But like the last set of AT2’s I’m seeing the hairline cracks in the rubber between the tread blocks. Spoke to a local tire shop that carries Toyo. He says this is common with the Toyo tires now. He speculates that they have changed something in the rubber compound as he is seeing this on all the Toyo’s & Nitto light truck tires now. Problem with trying to buy AT2’s is they have been discontinued and if you find 4 they will be older and if you later need a single replacement, you’re going to be out of luck.
I also have another truck (4WD SUV) and I tried the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT tire on it. So far this tire is way more quiet vs the Toyo AT3, and rides very good. Part of this is tread design and a tighter tread pattern. It’s been a great tire so far, including in wet weather and is 3 peak snowflake rated, with the Toyo is not. Only two complaints I have so far, is the tread pattern is tighter and not as aggressive looking. (personal preference) And I seem to get more small stones stuck between the tread blocks. The Toyo AT3 will do better in muddy conditions as the wider tread gaps will clean itself out better than the Cooper AT3. But if you’re unhappy with the Toyo AT3, maybe look at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT as a replacement.

@@toddcunningham2410 Hey thank you for the update! Very interesting about the hairline cracks!! I hadn't realised the AT2s are discontinued. Here in Australia the AT3s have only recently become available and so AT2s had continued to be readily available, so I thought they might have both available going forward. You make a good point about the potential problem where, if buying AT2s and needing a replacement down the track (see what I did there?) getting a matching replacement might be difficult. Hmm I think I will have to consider options further - but I might just give the AT3s a try simply because the AT2s have just been so very, very good and I have had several sets of Toyo tyres over the years and all have been very good. Thanks again for the update!

I HAVE 68,379 KM ON THEM WITH 8/32 TREAD DEPTH LEFT WHICH STILL MEANS 70% OF RUBBER LEFT ON TREAD. THESE ARE ROTATED EVERY 7,000 KM . THIS TIRE WILL GET 110,000 KM - 117,000 KM EASILY .

I’ve ran the A/T 2’s on 3 different trucks all LT’s size mostly 33x12.50r18 and 20’s never getting 40,000 miles. All full size truck 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks and 9 different sets.
Just replaced my first set of A/T 3’s with 63,500 miles after two and a half years. Yes I bought the 3’s again. 33x12.50r22 1500 ram 2020. Far better in rain, snow and dry.

BTW, 63,500 miles never rotated and never needed to be rebalanced. First time I’ve ever gone without rotating every 5,000 miles.
If we were not going into the rainy season I’d be pushing them longer east 5,000 miles of dry driving left. A lot of heavy loads 2,500 lbs and towing. Heavy right foot, jack rabbit starts and love fast corners. I’m not easy on any of my trucks.

Have had the AT 2s on now for 40,000 miles. They are on a 1998 Ford Expedition XLT 4X4 4.6L. I HAVE them rotated and balanced roughly every oil change of 6000 miles. I have been running them on nitrogen since new (love the nitrogen holds the tire harder and tighter to me) 40 PSI. NEW 13/32 HAD THEM JUST TESTED 9/32, NOT BAD AT ALL. I WILL SAY THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A VERY EASILY BALANCED TIRE. I will say on my truck they will start to hydroplane at 62-65 MPH, MAYBE BECAUSE OF THE 40 PSI? THE nitrogen seems to hold the tire pressure very well. These tires are used more on and off road in country. I have been in some serious stuff💩, never got stuck. Always used AWD, all but once had to use 4x4 high but she did get right out. However the tires got filled with mud almost to slicks. NOT GOOD! LOOKING FORWARD TO THE AT/3s to be better. My son up at the tire shop, says the new side wall design, has a tendency to pull in nails and screws he's been noticeing on some of the tires so far. My son knows his stuff when it comes to tires. Now the AT/2s have been some of the best tires for my needs. Look forward to the AT3s in spring. Hope this helps!

I AM A RETIRED AIRCRAFT MECHANIC WITH 38 YEARS AND I CAN TELL YOU THE ONLY 3 PLACES THAT NEED NITROGEN IN THEIR TIRES ARE 1 ALL AIRCRAFT TIRES ARE ALWAYS FILLED WITH NITROGEN OTHER WISE THEY WOULD BURST WITH PLAIN AIR. WHEN A 777 LANDS WITH 40PLUS TONS THOSE TIRES WHEN THEY HIT THE RUNWAY THEY HEAT UP SUPER FAST .
2 RACE CAR TIRES ARE ALWAYS FILLED WITH NITROGEN CAUSE OF THE HEAT THEY GENERATE , WOULD BURST AS WELL WITH PLAIN AIR.
3 HEAVY 5 TH WHEEL TRAILERS NEED NITROGEN ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE BEING PULLED IN CALIFORNIA, ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO, TEXAS, OR FLORIDA .
YOU SAY YHE NITROGEN HOLDS THE SIDE WALL HARDER AND DOESN’T LOSE PRESSURE AS WELL. ITS ALL IN YOUR HEAD NITROGEN DOES NOT MAKE A TIRE STRONGER,OR TOUGHER . AS FOR LOSING PRESSURE IN COLD YOU WILL ALWAYS LOSE PRESSURE. YOU HAVE BEEN BRAIN WASHED BY A TIRE SALESMAN, TELLING YOU BS FACTS ABOUT NITROGEN STRENGTHENING TIRES. THE REASON SEMI CABS DO NOT RUN NITROGEN EVEN IN ARIZONA,TEXAS OR FLORIDA IS THE COST. 10 TIRES ON A CAB WOULD COST A FORTUNE $$$$$ . THE COST WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND .
