“How often do planes crash?” “Just once”
I hate to be a grammar Nazi, but that sentence is grammatically incorrect. What you want to say is "How often does a plane crash?" Because planes (plural) crash all the time (well not all the time but certainly there has been more than 1 plane crash in history).
Mary Barr no it’s correct. Planes only crash once. I’ve never heard of planes crashing more than once (and if so, it wasn’t a real crash).
Mary Barr Take your head out from the textbook and actually learn English that makes sense.

@DEUS EX I realize you were just joking, and it's all good.
But now I have a question: even if the problem occurred at 500 mph, can't any plane just stay in the air with no engine thrust, gradually losing speed and altitude until they're down as low as the speed of the Sully event?

Honestly just the thought of how much space there would be between my feet and the ocean floor would be enough for me to die of a panic attack if I ever got out of a sinking plane with just a lifejacket...
ha, I get that too. It's like an illogical fear of heights isn't it?
Literally the same space between the plane and the ocean surface before you crashed
@@daslynnter9841 Average ocean depth is 12,000ft. Average airplane cruising altitude is 30,000ft. So not _literally_ the same, unless by "literally" you mean, "I'm one of those Millennials who can't understand my own first language".

I don't get priority boarding. You just sit there for an extra 30 minutes watching people block eachother in the hallway and clumsily stuffing their luggage in the overhead bins while you could've been out at the gate stretching your legs - you're about to sit there for hours, anyway. Unless you're flying with Ryanair and don't have assigned seats (but fuck that).

I love watching stuff like this 2 days before flying. Never fails to ease my already non existent nerves 😎
Brilliant peace.
Now I know why he used a very simple, monotone and impunity whistle and not the standard looong one you would think of off the bat.
He sculpted it in a way to use later with the heli sound. The simplicity and monotone*ality to make it resonate better later so you would remember it.
Oh god now I’m in stitches my belly’s aching with laughter... thanks for this... was a real treat
The brace position reduces flailing by having a forward-facing occupant lean over their legs and it reduces secondary-impact injuries by pre-positioning the body against a surface that can be struck. This reduces the momentum of the head and other parts of the body. Also, they usually won't tell you to brace if you strike a mountain at 500mph.
Appreciate that info
I watched a safety video on an Air New Zealand flight and laughed in the middle of it. Hilarious.

When I fly, I always try to get a seat right at the back of the plane - because nobody has ever reversed a plane into a mountain!
Hilariously spot on Ricky
That whistle subject, was the same as one in Top Gear when Land Rover made about a whistle in bad situations. Such innovation. Much wow.
This is PURE GOLD.
Did I miss the meeting where it was decided comedians weren't allowed to develop material on the same subject?
Anyway, another thing the Big Yin said about flying was the safety advice about putting on a lifejacket when about to crash into a mountain. "This will do you no good at all, but when archeologists find your remains in two hundreds years time, they'll think there was a river here."
I like how he waits for the laughs to stop so the whistle can be heard. 2:49

This is a great masterclass in joke timing ❤️
It depends on the type of crash. Crash in to mountain or in to the sea good luck but if it is during taking off or landing you have a good chance of surviving.
2:10 how does he keep a straight face while doing that skit 😂😂
Hillarious!! This is a funny guy!! 😂🤣
I love Ricky Gervais and I'm not saying this is totally ripped off of it, but this is really super similar to a stand up bit by George Carlin.
Christopher Shaner that’s funny I was watching that exact bit the other day and it’s definitely similar but I don’t think it was ripped off either
I've talked about place crashes n stuff like this to my friends many times, so I'm sure it wasn't copied. Just great minds thinking alike I guess. (Not calling myself the great mind just them lol)
This isnt funny coming from Ricky Gervais
Honestly hes got a point. Wouldn't something like a laser pointer be more useful?
most of the safety videos i sat through told me they were equipped with a light
@@sereese4937 well yeah but that'll do f**k all in the day time lol. A laser pointer works no matter the time of day and can reach much further.
The whistle sounds had me in tears xD
The start about the brace:
Its desighned to stop you smacking or go flying into the bulkhead or seat infront.
The whistle on life jacket:
Usually there are some survivers on water, its so ur crew can hear if anyone needs immediate help, like z code blue in a hospitalm

Jimmy Carr did basically the exact same joke in one of his stand ups and so did Alan Davis on QI. Idk if this is plagiarised but it’s certainly influenced
There is an german Comedian named Michael Mittermayer who did that exact same Joke in the late 90's as well.
2:45 that old school window opening on a helicopter lmfao.
What a legend
Love how there is people taking this literally lol it is a comedy bit! Everything safety wise on a plane is there for a reason.
Jack D what, the second half of your comment contradicts the first half
Seat belts (in cars) have saved many thousands of lives. Nobody has ever been saved by the life preserver and whistle, even though they've been available on almost all commercial flights for many years.
@@nagualdesign Nobody? Not one single person? You must know a lot about this to be able to make claims like that.
@@FOKI5895 Nah, I just saw it on QI. 😜 It isn't the sort of extraordinary claim that requires extraordinary evidence though. It's a straightforward factoid that should be easily falsifiable if it isn't true.
@@nagualdesign Then you must know that a plane crash where a plane slams into ground and explodes is very rare, and most of the time gliding descend, or landing on water is an option, a lot of people have survived a plane crash. Most famous example for water would be flight 1549.
Ok.
So Iran plane crash + Ricky Gervais golden globe speech = this.
Reminds me of an old Michael Mittermeier (German comedian) bit, pretty much the same joke about the whistle
Reading town Genuis normal guy... Superb ricky g 💯%. On top form
There isn’t even room in cattle class to lean forward and adopt the brace position but Ricky wouldn’t know this with all his lovely brace adopting space in first class
I'm around 5'6, there seems to be adequate space for me. What matters is that you're pressed tight against the seat in front
Don't forget the light on the life-jacket.......that 1 watt bulb will help attract sharks/jelly fish.
Love him
I totally agree with Ricky! But he managed to make it super hilarious out of it
It's not at all accurate. Having a next to 0% chance of surviving a plane crash seems to be a fairly common misconception. People always think of the situations Ricky described when they think of a plane crash and for those, it's highly unlikely that anyone survives, but in reality, those types of crashes are the rarest. Most plane "crashes" these days are runway excursions, where the plane slides off the runway. This type of accident is generally very survivable and adopting the brace position will reduce your chances/the severity of injuries. This is why you are told to brace for an emergency landing. Once you consider all types of plane crash, your chances of surviving one are around 95%
"Actually, the brace position is to protect your head and teeth so that you can be identified"...that's literally as ridiculous as the joke this comment thread is based upon. A planes going down at 300 - 500 miles an hour into a mountain and your forearms provide enough of a shelter to your head and teeth that rescuers can identify you. The passengers teeth ( and heads ) amongst those who failed to adopt the brace position are just mush, unidentifiable.
The dislikes are from those who died, obviously
They didn't brace
if thats the true then, "Hi grandpa and grandma!"
There is a bit of dave allen in this bit lol. If you watch Dave Allen's stand up bit from the 80s and 90s it similar to his.
It smashes the fuck to bits 😂
If I watch all the little segments from his Netflix show, I won’t have to get Netflix. Save some money
Didn't Jimmy Carr performed the whistle bit in his act already?!!
Ronnie John's did this years ago as chopper... very funny and worth a watch
Eddie Izzard done it about 20 years ago
Bradley Walsh did it way before even had, check it out.
And Billy Connolly
YES! OBVIOUSLY 100 PEOPLE HAVE DONE THIS BIT BEFORE! This is like arguing over who was the first person to fart
I have never watched the office UK but damn this guy is actually funny😂
This is well delivers and funny and I love Gervais, but didn’t Dave Allen so the whistle in the ocean bit?
Doesn't matter how much you pay for your ticket or how plush your seat is, if it falls out the sky you're dead...
Jimmy Carr had a very similar bit about the brace position not doing anything on a plane. this routine seemed to copy a few other comedians acts
And a certain Irish comedian in the 1970s
It smashes the fuck to bits
When is this special out?
