    I bought one of these for my wife. The fan went bad within a month and now screeches loudly. I reached out to Minisform and haven't heard back in 2 months. It isn't even a standard size fan, so I can't just replace it. Never had trouble with any other mini pcs before, but yeah, stay away from this one unless you have a very specific size requirement and want to gamble.

    • @EVOTech1
      @EVOTech1  7 месяцев назад +3

      That’s the worst part of these kinds of systems using very non standard parts. Fan replacements are a huge pain. You’re pretty much out of luck if a seller on Aliexpress isn’t supplying replacement fans. The fact that this system has two tiny fans means if they fail you’re pretty much SOL.

    Happy to finally see a honest reviewer in the minipc world. I loved your minipc holiday shopping video. Thanks for addressing this. I didn't expect this to be massively powerful because Notebookcheck had benchmarked it and they didn't give it high game scores, but I didn't understand why.
    It actually suits my use case - office work with a bit of WoT - but there's always the temptation to do more.
    Good luck in the New Year!

    A very interesting piece at a key moment, for me. I was watching a channel where the best mini pc's of 2023 were featured. This one came up and on the whole, definitely very impressive for how much was packed in to such a small space.
    It made me go back and watch the original review, where games were at the fore of the demonstrations, noting that for the processor in the box, the gaming didn't seem to match the expectation especially from having seen reviews of other machines of the same ilk. Aalso not seemingly noted by the reviewer.
    And then, half an hour later, I spotted this video and it all made sense.
    I do agree that the Minisforum statement was rather weak and meaningless, unless they were to do two things. 1. Send a 100w power supply with all future orders and 2. Offer a 100w power supply to existing customers at cost, therefore offsetting some of the criticisms with at least an earnest offer. I'm sure that vouchers for ocally sourced sites could be sent to help.

    Just want to chim in here since I have one myself - exact 32GB variant.
    The default BIOS - locked 15W total when both CPU and GPU are in used. Locked 28W total when only CPU is hit. This is pretty strange when I load up Linux and see that when gaming, the damn thing only clock the CPU from 400-1400Mhz. And GPU only take about 8W max. In short, pretty crap for how it is shown on other reviewers.
    Turn out running the "special" BIOS make it even more special.
    Running a game now the whole packages run up to 28W. Look pretty normal. Until I tested to run a very light 2d games unlocked framerate - it draws like 20W. How the hell so? Turn out the GPU part is locked at 15W MAX, REGARDLESS of the CPU load.
    A laptop and an AYN Loki I have both use 6800U. They don't do that. CPU+GPU=TDP set. So 3W CPU + 30W TDP leave 27W for GPU to use. Essentially dynamic allocation of power between the CPU and GPU as long as the max TDP is reach. The EM680 however, just statically split 15W to the GPU part. It's craptastic. CPU always has 0 to max TDP.
    The worst part is that on default or special unlocked BIOS, the cpu temp never even pass 75C under gaming load.

    Thank you for the information here: The last PC I built for myself I built before my 10yo son was born - a 2500k based system - and it is on its last legs in so many ways so this EM680 looked to be for me ( emulation, office, photo editing ) a pretty good fit, one that I could hook up to our family room TV and enjoy a game with my son on as well every now and then. Looks like I will be ordering a 100W GaN..
    Or maybe return it as the EU rep told me after I ordered an EM680 32/1tb off Amazon they are expecting a replacement model any day now. Z1?

      Currently waiting for the video to process, but the test of the updated bios will be up soon so you can see how big the uplift is in gaming. For CPU workloads there no difference since it already ran CPU only at its 30W TDP. The gains are very nice all around for gaming tho.

    the pricing of mini pc is very interessting at the moment, more the differences and changes. Here I've got flooded with offers, reduced plus coupon. I've only wanted a very budget version of a Mini PC, like N100 or N95, which were about 200 Euro. At the end I've got the best deal I've seen in my area with a bit over 200 Euro. 5560U 16gb/512gb. Best deals for 5700U and 5800U were about 310 Euro/330 Euro. And now you can't get a 5560U with the same specs below 330 Euro. (incl. VAT)

    So how did the other reviewers got the MSI Afterburner to show 27-28W TDP while gaming ? Also, if you look at your GPU utilization in the display, it is not at 90%+ for a long time. In the CS2 part f.e, it is mostly at or below 50%, so 15W TDP would not surprise me at that level. Can you load it with a longer running synthetic (Unigine and the like) without FSR and other crutches ?
    Somehow you are about the first one I have seen to mention the issue. Most of the EM680 reviews I saw were fairly consistent in the results ...

    Thanks alot for this review! There is a real hype for those Mini PCs and alot of shallow reviews. Those are mostly running meaningless benchmarks and a couple of games in best conditions. One of those was the UM690... It had heating problems which you get after playing games 1-2 hours. No one mentions this fact. At least Minisforum is listening to the customer, so they updated it and the UM690S was released. So thanks for the truth about this tiny pc. Now with the updates bios i am afraid about the cooling capacity of this machine as it was not purposed for long gaming sessions at higher TDP. I am looking forward to your next review!

      I think a blanket recommendation for a brand is not a good move. Pretty much every company will have good products and bad products. In general, all Beelink systems I’ve tried have been solid without any issues. I have had also good luck with GMKtec. I wouldn’t even say Minisforum is bad as I love the UM780 XTX, but their UN1245 and EM680 were big letdowns.

    • @thestreamreader
      @thestreamreader 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@EVOTech1 Yeah my problem is why Beelink won't post BIOS updates on their website. Kind of leaves a big question mark in my mind as why people say you have to reach out to them directly. Something seems up with that as any mainstream manufacturer has no problem sharing their updates.

    • @EVOTech1
      @EVOTech1  7 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah I have seen them claim on their forums that they don't want customers bricking their systems. I actually messaged them about getting a bios update for the SER7 since i ran into an issue that will be mentioned in the upcoming video. They emailed me a link to the bios download on gdrive, with some instructions on how to update it. It was a very convoluted way of updating it since i had to format a USB drive with a specific name and put the files into it in a specific way then try to boot off it. it brings up a very generic AMI bios update screen and it runs through the flashing process. Very odd all around. I don't think it's anything malicious but it seems like since they just use the generic AMI made BIOS screens, they probably dont have any UI based Flashing tool like other more established brands. They just use the very generic and basic AMI flashing utility that would probably freak out most normal users. I imagine they don't want to pay for a custom bios UI, they dont want to deal with customers somehow messing up the flashing process and bricking their systems then having to warranty them, AND they don't want to set up an automatic verification system where you need input your SN number and product ID to get the proper file link. It's still very annoying having to go through customer support just to get a bios file. if you need a fix, you have to wait potentially days for a response to get a bios made 4 months ago that fixed the issue but you had no way of getting it without the CS Rep. If Beelink goes under, all we can rely on is users backup these bios files to share with others. it's insanely dumb.

      @@XVa-uj8m this would be a dream come true. I wish at least one mini PC manufacturer would commit to support and parts availability the same way Valve has done with the steam deck. The fact that you can go onto iFixit and get any replacement part for the deck means systems are gonna be usable well into the future. The fact that replacement parts are available outside of Valve means that even if valve shuts down, the parts are still floating around somewhere, not just sitting in a valve wearhouse waiting to be scrapped. I’m still skeptical about the long term of framework but goddamn do I want them to succeed. If they can start branching out into mini PCs I’d be a day one supporter (as long as the product is actually good, of course)

    Yes Minisforum kinda lied but they also kinda didn't. The EM680 from the start was designed to be a 15w TDP PC but all the advertisment says otherwise. The 2.17 bios update was probably released to keep owners happy even though the bios update isn't designed/suitable for the PC.
    If you did a little research like myself before purchasing, this would have already been known.
    I didn't buy the EM680 to game on because I already had all the information needed to know it wouldn't game. It's an excellent mini PC that's helped keep my electricity bill down and that is why I brought it.

    • @EVOTech1
      @EVOTech1  7 месяцев назад +3

      I am referring mostly to the content creators that would modify the stock TDP settings using 3rd party software without really explaining to people the 15W TDP issue with gaming. Keep in mind, the default TDP out of the box is 30W according to the bios. in the release message for 2.17, they even specify that the system behaves normally in CPU only tasks, which is why Cinebench runs at 30W perfectly fine. it's mixed loads that would cause the 15W hard limit. This isn't really explained anywhere. and what do you consider readily available? No where on minisforum's website or amazon listings doe it say that the system will hardlock to 15W when it's gaming. If you dont end up going on random forums or on Reddit, you wouldn't know. I feel like we should expect more from companies than to just wait for the first wave of customers to essentially QA test this stuff. Especially when many of the RUclipsrs covering this system ran it out of spec and did not disclose the out of box issues to their audience.

    ETA Prime is by far the worst pc "reviewer" on RUclips, and 2nd place isn't even close. Heck, Minisforum even has his videos on their website. In my opinion, ETA Prime is the biggest tech scammer on RUclips.
