RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW | COMBINED XV

- If you had access to every player from the Rugby Championship squads who would you select in a Combined XV, before a ball has been kicked? It should reveal the questions in selection, the strengths and weaknesses in terms of the style of play and where the balance of power lies.
I'd love to see a combined Rugby Championship team vs the Lions
That would be EPIC!
Without Argentina to make it a combined Southern Commonwealth team.
Otherwise you have to include France and Italy with the Lions.
If they can play a warm-up game against the Lions the bookies will take a beating.
It would make more sense to want to see a Northern hemisphere side vs Southern hemisphere one.
France and even Italy, and Georgia have some great players that would make the northern hemisphere squad.... and, arguably, sides like Fiji might have a player or two that would make the Southern Hemisphere 23.

Tim please don't go wander about too far when you go to Ellispark.Stay within a group of local rugby supporters...You do not want to get lost in Central Joburg
Your list makes me so proud as a saffer. I am uneasy with the lack of NZ players. The teams are very close as you say.
When you're in Cape Town Tim, my recommendation for the best meat is Nelson's Eye. And you need to go to the winelands as well. I think the best red wine in the Stellenbosch area is Kanonkop. Looking forward to having you back in the country!
Nelson's Eye recommendation seconded! It's a no frills, no fuss hole in the wall that is always packed because they keep the main thing the main thing; quality steak at very lenient prices.
Personally I prefer Delheim and Muratie. Guardian Peak is also great. Then there's Rust and Vrede as well. :)
Kanonkop the best by far! From Langebaan 🇿🇦
Great recommendations! Spot on to both.
Nelson’s Eye - absolutely, mate👌🏾👌🏾
I look forward to seeing how this team changes after the tournament
For me personally, 9. TJ Perenara 10. Damian Mckenzie/Sacha - Feinberg Mngomezulu 11. Mark Talea 12. Jodie Barrett 13. Jesse Kriel 14. Kurt - Lee Arendse 15. Wille Le Roux
Kwagga should stay as an impact player, and the sooner Cameron Hanekom gets a look in the better.
Hanekom is injured.
Roos is too ill disciplined to be selected. Lots of other SA forwards coming up.
Proudly South African, but I think that All Black team of McCaw, Carter etc. was just phenomenal and is the greatest team (in my lifetime anyway).
Also feels very weird people saying that we are favourites. I much prefer the underdog or pretender title
I agree fully. Boks only really perform when our backs are against the wall.thats why our record in Australia is poor.they can't get the boks going like the ABS and England.
This is gonna be a legendary championship
In my wildest dreams, I would never have dreamt of a BOK backline as the preferred choice of a RC combined team.
Since 1991, you would struggle to get 1 BOK in the team of the year backline.
Let's see what it looks like at the end.
Joost, Habana & Fourie DuPreez would always make it (even among the great All Black bscklines during their respective playing years). IMO..... But yeah, not many would.
@@ABB24-07 Jaque Fourie and JdV were as good a centre pairing as Nonu/Smith on their day...
@MorkelErasmus Agreed but I think they would be in & out of best bsckline.. Nono & Smith would probably crack the nod more often than not. Whereas, Joost, Habana & FDP would always make it.... IMO OFCOURSE
5:56 😅😅my heart skipped a beat when I saw the number 6 jersey
Good case made, but there are more lurking than those mentioned here
The AUZZIE underdogs are having to rise out of the dust and dirt
HUNGER on their side being the decisive factor…?And a ‘new dawn’ with Joe et cie
Thnx
Yes, you are quite right about it changing
And, i MUST underline DMac : he’s going to come forward powerfully more than allowed for Tim
A pity also about Christie…
HUGELY excited about the nxt while🥂
This period of ‘interim silence’, Tests wise, is deadening ‼️😳

Interesting video really enjoyed it. I probably would have had another couple of NZ lads in there and im not a kiwi or a south african supporter. Jordie Barrett would have been my 12. Dont get me wrong De Allende is a top drawer 12 no doubt's or arguments from me, but where i feel Barrett is so valuable is hes probably the most well rounded of all the 12s in world rugby at this moment. Can kick for miles, can kick high, kick 50 22s, kick pass, goal kick etc. couple that with his skill set from playing 15, 14 and even 10 during his career, proper X factor along with being world class under the high ball. But most importantly for a 12, he’s a big fella. He’s brave and doesn’t shunt the fact that he’s got to tuck it up his jumper and run it hard and run it straight. Defensively strong aswell as strong over the ball and was in good form for the Hurricanes this past Super Rugby season. Under Razor Robertson he could really stamp his authority as the best 12 around.
I look at that past rugby cycle and the first two and a half years NZ were so poor. There was multiple reasons for that, one reason was the extremely poor showing of David Havilli in the 12 jersey. He couldnt get an inch over the gain line, couldn’t stop the likes of DeAllende, Danty and Henshaw from giving the opposing team a platform time and time again. A lot of credit rightfully goes to Jase Ryan and Joe Schmidt for getting some better displays out of NZ, but Big coincidence was When the better form came, Barrett made the move to 12. Richie Mounga found his first real prolonged period of good form in a black jersey when Barrett went to 12. He’ll be very important over the next Cycle possibly two for whoever is the NZ 10. Whether it be McKenzie or even if Mounga does end up back in NZ I’m not sure, having him there seems to have helped so much. Anyway this long winded comment is in no way me trying to say you’re wrong because as I say, jeez we all know DeAllende can play, it’s just my own reasons why I personally think Barrett is the best 12 about.
10/15 for Boks, maybe they're that good. I'm looking forward to seeing the team post the tournament .
Even as a South African, I’m surprised at this team. I would have expected Jordie Barret, and Mark Telea.
I think this will be Sacha’s breakout tournament and season, he will be legend!
It should also be worth noting that the only team with a better win percentage than Springboks is All Blacks. Also the only team with a net positive result table against the Boks is the All Blacks.
Hey Tim, thanks for another great programme. Whilst in Cape Town pop into Hamilton RFC, Just across the road from the stadium. Oldest club in the country. Just a thought l. Cheers.
No no no Tim, We like to be under dogs :') Your putting the curse on us! history hasn't favored us in TRC. Thanks for the content as usual. *za*
Tim, where are the safari clips you promised
Will Jordan will be the ABs fullback.
Tim! The major disappointment I felt from losing the second test against Ireland is the fact that the Boks lost out on an opportunity to go unbeaten the whole year. I honestly believe that the Boks ought to beat everyone else this season.
We're very lucky both NZ tests are at home. We have to win both tests to assert ourselves as the 👌
@@nicolasvanstaden263 100%. There will never be a better time to do this than this year.
ABs pack is going to be next level. Last scrum of RWC they monstered SA. Their combined weight could be massive plus their front row can last a lot longer minutes than the SA one. Plus they got Jas Ryan.
Actually, it was the last 2 scrums. The South Africans were being dominated in the second to last scrum, hence the reason Faf de Klerk delayed putting the ball in, which called for a reset.
The actual last scrum, he put the ball in so quickly because the South Africans got dominated. He didn't even get to clear it, the Springbok forward back was going backwards.
Can't quibble with these choices as an AB fan that has always worried about the Saffers realizing their potential outside WC's.
Question for NZ is can they find a way to deal with the smothering defense of SA ? I think Razers first minor improvement (and major impact?) is we've just gone 3 games in a row with 15 men on the field for 80 mins. I think this is as crucial as whoever got the Irish to stop dropping the ball whenever they neared the goalline.
I haven't seen anyone mention that as an improvement yet, and you are absolutely spot on. Generally, if the ABs can keep 15 on the field - they win. You'd have to think that this has been a massive focus for Razor and his coaching staff - hope to see it continue into the RC.
ROAD TO 100K🎉 Proud Saffa EGG MUNCHER🔥
Wouldn't mind seeing a best of Southern XV vs Northern XV match 😮
Yes Tim! Keep up the entertaining content
Haha, i looked at the end team before watching and every position i was immediately thinking of someone else you mentioned also as being injured. There's a few players i would pick as most reliable in a pinch, but wouldn't pick for overall impact.
1. Ethan de Groot, as an actual starter far better than Ox. It's a different game when starting and not against a 14 man NZ.
2. Sadly i don't know that we will ever see the best of Malcolm Marx again carrying sustained injures, my favorite 2 ever. Montoya was also my 2nd choice.
6. I had Marcus Kremer. PSDT might be a better player but i don't expect him to have as much tournament impact for his team.
7. I had Fraser McReight, maybe Pablo Matera instead, I expect the loosies to be key positions for Arg/Aus, being under more pressure.
8. Rob Valetini, i like best when starts 8, with McReight out probably won't I imagine. The % of Aus work done both sides of the ball by this man is immense.
9. Ratima would be my pick if he actually gets to stay consistant starter alongside McKenzie.
10. If things go well for NZ, i expect things to revolve around Damian McKenzie. If things go well for SA i don't expect things to revolve around Pollard. Pull your ass out of the fire yes, spark things no.
11. Mateo Carreras.
12. Anton Leinert-brown at 12 or 13 if NZ actually start him anywhere.
14. Filipo Daugunu
15. Santiago Cordero/Tom Wright
Some of these are hopeful for the health of rugby.
Every single position that isn't NZ/SA has very high standard options across the board, the overall levels/standards are so high for the 2 teams. The Aus/Arg players i pick are individual performers, i expect both teams to lose up front.
SA does a left and right flank as well. Only time i can remember us doing a proper open side is Brussouw and he was probably the best open side ive ever seen.
Roos is injured and having surgery. Out for 4-6 months.
Also i think Will Jordan will be playing 15 for ABs.
If you're referring to Heinrich Brussow, he is hands down the best loose forward ever to come out of South Africa. Followed by Pierre Spies and Schalk Burger
I don't think we HAVE to win the championship, but we Have to beat the all blacks twice. If Australia can pull something special and somehow win the whole thing,i really don't mind
Tim a heads up - at no 8 we have a youngster called Cameron Hanekom - currently injured - but he will be our no 8
Strickly speaking South Africa has changed coach but given that Rassie has always been around in one form or another I'll give you that one ;)
We changed assistant coaches as well.
I wouldn’t put the SA backline above the NZ backline personally. On a par yes.
No complaints though. It will all be sorted on the park.
British and Irish Lions against a combined Rugby Champs Team...........!
Tom Wright to emerge as a world class 15
Harry Wilson to push for #8 of the tournament
Matt Faessler top try scoring forward
An Aussie fan dares to dream once again
I think Williams is going to be starting scrum half going forward
I'm on betting on NZ for the title.
dangerous team that
The ABs are always in the running. One can never write them off.
That would be a good bet historically. When it comes to the RC, NZ is the favorite.
Good bet
Creeping up on that 100k, Tim. Our Kiwi friends will feel righteously agrieved because we know they are dangerous and the ABs can win any day.
Absolutely they can!
Tim, how about setting up an Eggchasers Superbru group?
Spot on bro
Damian Willemse should be back by the time the AB's arrive in SA.
Brandy and coke with the breakfast braai this weekend in south Africa
Thanks for your bokke support. ❤

Looking forward to this one! I might just have to put some brandy in my coffee come Saturday morning...
Nice idea! Thanks Tim
As a kiwi I think Scott Barrett would rank behind the 4 top South African locks.
I agree mostert, de jager, Jean kleyn when fit are better than scott barrett
I rate him as a lock mate. Just needs to sort out that discipline!🙂
Bok fan here. On current form I would pick DMac over HP, nothing to choose between Mark Telea and Cheslin. Feel like the boks's championship will be decided down under, anything less than two wins will put NZ in the driving seat
Kiwi here living in Dubai. Will be going to Cape Town. Would love to meet up for a beer
I can’t believe South Africa have only won 4 Tri Nations/Rugby Championships since 1996. That is CRAZY!!
They have been VERY average for most of that time. Two recent world cups by the skin of their teeth doesnt change that.
Why are you so obsessed with South Africa?
@@alexiachamberlin8019 who? me or the OP?
Tbf, from 99-2005 we were trash, after 2007 we were oky for 2/3 years and then after that it was dead on arrival in NZ and Aus most of the time, untill 2018 ish
Even then, playing in Aus and NZ has always been a struggle, time diff adaptation is hard one way, not that much the other... and of course Nz are just better than us especially from 2009-2017
@@alexiachamberlin8019 Obsessed? Im just surprised how poor they have been in the competition. I didn’t intend to upset anyone.
I think the teams that start the first match against Aus may look very different to the ones that start in the first match against NZ.
Judging by this list I think it's time that we discuss the place of Australia in the Rugby Championships.
I’ve made the trip to Australia for the first test. Surely we can end the Brisbane hoodoo?
Hard to argue with that team. I’d have Tele’a over Kolbe on current form, I think he’s the best winger in the world on current form
Although as a South African Kolbe all the time, Telea deserves to be in the squad.
Rationale sounds spot on at this early stage😊
My only changes would be n3 Malherbe, n11 Telea, n14 Kolbe. Kremer and PSDT in defense together would be immense
As a Saffa I am very worried about NZ. I think this will be another NZ championship. I would like Cobus at 9 but he is already 34. I hoped this would be the year of experimentation as we would have nothing to lose this year, as it's a reset year, World Cup done and dusted. NZ being that bit younger just look too strong at the moment. I think South Africans should feel a bit nervous. I would start bleeding younger guys, and mix them with the double World Cup winners sooner rather than later before they inevitably retire, lose form or get too old. Mix youth with experience while we still can. The 15 is way too South Africa heavy to be honest.
Amazing seeing a list with only one NZ back!!....but i can see its not a controversial call these days
The argument that the world cup is the only competition that matters and determines the best in the world is factually incorrect for a variety of reasons:
If a team qualified for the world cup every 4 year cycle. And never played a single test match outside of world cup games but then won the world cup 4 of the 10 times it has occurred, would that make them the greatest team in the world?? Considering they never played any other team in between and never won a tournament between world cup years. This scenario is highly unlikely but a valid argument and is plausible the way things can happen in sport.
Similarly, amongst other competitive sports like swimmering, all track and field sports and other sports which measure success based in times and distances. If they break a WR in any competition outside of the Olympics (which many would consider that sports equivalent of a Rugby world cup) does that WR stand or hold any weight. As long as it was achieved in a recognized competition by the governing board of that sport then it will stand and hold weight. There is a reason there can be differences between the WR and OR in many sports because WR don’t matter wether it was acheived at the Olympics or another official competition. So competitions like the Rugby championship and six nations and summer series tests and even major club tournaments like super rugby, URC, Champions cup still bear a significant amount of weight outside of the world cup and it is a inherently ignorant perspective to claim that nothing matters outside of the world cup.
I guess it's just which one do 'you' want the most, which one means the most ...
Great video.. don’t think RG should get the nod over will Skelton, Jordie has much more of a skill set than Damian (kicking and offload ability) but agree, looking forward to how this will change over 6 games
Exciting times ahead, may the best team win!
Evan is not down the pecking,he is getting his left shoulder worked on,will be out 6-7 months.Been playing with the injury last year and a half
You missed the obvious call on Will Jordan - as soon as he’s fit he will be starting fullback, wasted on the wing and Razor knows it
Great idea!
I am also worried about our aging squad but trust in the process while keeping momentum. I already see us (SA) phasing in and creating debt at prop, lock, hooker, number 7, no 9 , 10 and 15. Our headache at 8 is for the past more than a decade we had Duane and Spies and no one else had a chance. Also the other future problems will be at 12.
Saffas will definitely have the home advantage. I think NZ can hope for one each.
Glad your confident SA are the favorites. I'm a huge bok fan but don't feel your confidence. By the way Tim, Evan Roos is having an op so he's out for the championship cup. Let's get through Saturdays game will give us some insight to Rassies plan.
Well, Tim. You are more confident in our abilities than I am. At least, on paper. Oddly, South Africans don't truly rate the RC. Don't get me, wrong, its not that I don't care BUT its more about winning the actual individual games than the RC title for me. Even as a hard core rugby fans I wouldn't be able to tell you which years we won any RC titles. Probably the 2009 white wash but that is because of Brussow owning McCaw and my assuming the RC title would follow than actually knowing we took out the title that year.
If we dont win this RC we are def not the best in the world. Full stop. Its time for SA to be more dominant in this comp
That's a lot for a team that's going to finish 3rd
Yeah I agree. Way too many AB's in there
@@vdw_12500the old men on tren™ aren't winning it. They never do
2nd maybe but 3rd😂 no
Funny every time I mention peds in relation to SA, that comment disappears
If South Africa want to be in the conversation as the best team ever and to compete with the 2011-2015 All Blacks. Then they def have to win the Rugby Championship, and go through an international season unbeaten (That's not happening this year).
South Africa should be favorites because they are the current World Champs and rightfully so. But Ireland showed in both games showed they are vunerable, and won with a weakened side in that second test.
I've been harping on about this for the past year. The current average age of this Springbok squad is going to be detrimental to this side going forward. With all their experience and caps under their belt, they were dominated in the forwards by Ireland in the July series. They barely managed to beat an ordinary AB's side with 14 on the field. They squeezed past England and France respectively.
You can't beat father time, and this game is getting faster and more brutal every year. Eventually, this current Springboks side is going to falter if the coaching staff continues to rely on players that are well past their prime.
I’d be careful before downplaying the role of the rugby championship in determining the best team in the world, I remember when South Africa won the WC in 2007 but failed to win the then tri nations (finishing last) the following year it really did tarnish that team’s legacy at least in my eyes! If they want to be known as the best of all time they will need to exceed the win percentage of the AB’s between 2011WC and 2015WC I think! Not sure that’s possible as NH sides much closer to RSA then they were to the AB’s in the past!
I think Aus must give Harry Wilson that 8 jersey and let him run with it, then Bobby V at 7.
Good selection but I think we are going to see a lot more black in the finishing team , maybe a couple of really promising aussies .
I’m a saffer and I agree that SA needs to win this Rugby Championship.
8s for SA:
Jasper Wiese 28
Elrich Louw 24
Evan Roos 24 operation
Cameron Hanekom 22 back in 2 weeks
Lots of you options@8
1-8 Youngsters coming through will take over
Next 3 years massive comp for nrs in Bok team.
Serious talent!
3 world cups , 22 rugby championships out of 28 the ABS
Well done frank
Remember Wiese and Hanekom shotly avajlable for Boks at 8
South Africa are clear favourites to win the tournament at a canter.
Id pick Will Jordan at fullback and Sevu Reece on the other wing
In a recent interview Rassie more than suggested that Louw will start at 8.
We will see.
Nice pack! Would only change Dalton Papali’i over Kremer
So, Tim while you are missing rugby, please do your video of the bush, if you can. I'm in Cape town, and miss the bush.
100000 coming soon Tim!
North Vs south game would be awesome.
This should be the team that faces the British and Irish Lions
Malherbe should be in your front row, not Lomax. Eben Roos has had a major shoulder operation, so he is unavailable
Northern hemisphere v southrrn hemisphere would be an interesting match up
Wellcome back Tim in SA
I’m looking forward to the SA-NZ scrums! SA have the reputation, but NZ might have the cattle to outmuscle them where it will hurt their ego most ;) I really wouldn’t want to put money on this comp…
I think t wil be close but I wonder if our no 3 and 4 locks are just not yet in the same class as the Bok choices in this position
Would Skelton have featured in your team had he been brought in?
The springboks going to win it this year.
Grant Williams is LIGHTNING fast, he might be the fastest in the competition
South Africa knows who their number 8 will be 😊
Tim Roos will be out for a shoulder operation that he played for the whole season. according to news he will be out for 4-6 month
I'd like to see Grant Williams given an extended run.
SA are clear favourites with win the championship at a canter.
North vs South tour should begin playing against the Lions combined South team.😅
By the end of this series Morne van der berg will be the 9 of choice.
