    Thanks for the great video! I have just gone back to Kendo after a long absence and I'm so glad I found your channel. No body ever told me to pull the men-dare like that to help me hear. I always had problems hearing while wearing the men, now, thanks to you, I can hear much better at the dojo.

    Great videos. I am going to begin training kendo this September. There is just one dojo remotely close to where I live and they only take in new students twice a year. So I am studying all the basic kendo I can at the moment (Chudan no kamae and San-Kyodo Shomen Uchii). I have been waiting since early March and I feel like a child waiting for Christmas, I can not wait to begin! Again thanks Andy.

    Hey Andy Fisher Sensei,
    my first bogu just arrived from Japan and this video helped me a lot to learn how to put it on and do it neat and safely.
    Even though I have been watching the other kendoka from my dojo for a year now how it is done, it is still something completely different when you do it yourself ... :-D
    Thank you for the many helpful videos and interesting topics in your Kendo Rant.
    Keep it up!
    Best regards

    Great. Also, being a 'non-Kendo dad', it would be great to see a video one day specifically for western parents of kids who do Kendo. Often, we have no idea on how to tie the men, do, hakama etc, and also how the child should practice putting it on themselves. Our son started at 5, so his ability to tie the bogu without help has slowly progressed (now 7). He also puts on the tenigui slightly differently, an easier method for kids, where he folds it into a triangle. Now he will be learning how to tie the hakama, men, tare and do himself, but it's taking time. I think it does with kids, and slow parents like myself:) Thanks again Andy.

    Great video Andy! very easy to follow and understand. I have a question for you (or any kind Kendoka who would like to answer) how do you shape your men? Mine is very stiff and it is very rebelious to aquire a regular kendo men look.
    Thank you all for your help in advance! :)

    • @TheKendoShow
      @TheKendoShow  7 лет назад +4

      If you make sure you tie the Men, with the knot at the level of your eyes, and if you pull the Mendare forwards after tying, the shape will form naturally ;)

    Awesome explanation! I was all the time worrying about my ears 'cause they always started to hurt when I tied the men. But with that easy pull on the sides its now super comfortable. Also I like the easy "knot" for the bogu. Thank you very much. I appreciate your work a lot!

    As someone who has legit worn reproduction samurai armor before ever touching kendo, I am shocked that especially for the Dō that the process is so much more complicated for the most part then the Dō of samurai armor. Mainly because there’s a lot less reliance on knots and loops.

    Hi Andy. Thanks for your videos, I have learned a lot from them to reinforce what I learn in classes!
    Question for you or anyone that can answer -
    I’ve noticed that over time (and sometimes even with a new shinai), the bamboo slats begin to separate from each other, leaving some mm of space between. Sometimes it is across the length of the shinai. Other times, it happens more in a particular place, especially the widest part. (I’ve heard this called either “do” or “harishufa”?)
    Is this a problem for safety, performance, or longevity of the shinai? If it is, is there a way to fix it?
    Even if it isn’t a problem, I’d still like to be able to fix it. In my opinion it looks slovenly, aesthetically speaking.

    Hey Andy Fisher,
    How do I put on Men with a chin padding? I was told by my sensei that I have a sharp chin, that whenever I wear my Men, my chin kinda sits inside the chinguard, preventing me to shout my Kiai. Thank you in advanced!

    • @TheKendoShow
      @TheKendoShow  4 года назад

      It's hard to tell without seeing it, but it sounds to me like the Men you are wearing doesn't properly fit.
      Wearing the men with a chin pad is no different, but I am not sure it will solve your problem..

    How strict are they with gear in Japan? I'm going there in the Fall for a student exchange, and I figured I'd try out kendo while over there as the university I'm going to recommends exchange students take part in clubs. I'm thinking of bringing along the parts of my HEMA gear that are similar to kendo stuff (mask, gloves, neck-protector) to avoid having to buy everything. I assume tournaments etc. require specialized gear, but I won't be taking part in anything like that.

    • @Kendotips

      Hi, just heads up, I don't think a university club in Japan would be too happy with HEMA gear. I'm practicing in two clubs at the moment and even though they are very sporty, they do have some elements that are very traditional, and bogu is one of those things, but I would try t get in contact with the university directly so you don't carry the gear for no reason. I hope this helps!

    Why are bogus so expensive

    • @Deathborn_
      @Deathborn_ 5 лет назад

      They're actually fairly cheaper than what they used to be - It's a great thing that Kendo is a lot more practiced outside of Japan which basically contributes to having more affordable prices. You also have to factor in that even if they're machine stitched, the materials used are quite genuine leather/lacquers and there is some labor that goes into it. Bogu is more of an investment - you buy it and if you do take care of them, you make your money's worth with the amount of use you have the Bogu for (at least in my opinion). I'm a beginner myself in Kendo and I absolutely love it which is why I'm not quite concerned with the amount of money I'd invest in a Bogu (to a degree). I'm sure you don't need to get Bogu straight away but if you don't bother at all then eventually your Kendo will suffer (again my opinion, but I'm a beginner so what do I know). KendoStar is quite affordable especially with having Sales on most seasons/holiday seasons so spending about £300 - £500 isn't the end of the world, at least from what I've seen it's really good quality stuff. But like I say it's an investment, and a very good investment if you ask me, so if you are to get some then definitely put savings aside.
