It's a common gay fantasy: putting a straight guy off being what he is. I'm not sure that it is a respectful situation however. Anyway, friendship is mainly possible between gay & straight men: I lived a lot of beautiful relations with straight boys & men who were reliable friends knowing who I was & my "different" personality. Life made us be apart because of various reasons not linked with our relation but I still remember those beautiful days when I was much younger.

I have a young straight mate who has several gay friends and he hugs them and kisses them on the cheek and doesnt care because he is a loving caring guy who respects his gay mates and loves them just as much as his close straight mates. I'm proud to be his friend as a gay guy.

I loved this movie. It was so fresh to see that the friendship was so pure and not complicated. Although maybe Billy would have liked a bit more but Being friends with Flip was ultimately okay with him.
In fairness, it's not exactly "more realistic" since it's not "less realistic" for two guys to fall in love, but it is indeed a very nice move to portray this kind of friendship in such a sweet and down to Earth way.
