that Lee Dorsey guitar sample on “Oooh” 👌
my mind really craves that from time to time.
Love when they catch & loop short passing phrases for a great moody sound.

I felt sorry for them not owning their master tapes because they talked about how tom silverman just would NOT do right by them on another video. Congratulations on their victory. I've been to a lot of Walmarts over the past 6 MONTHS and haven't seen any of their remasters yet.

I say to any new artist. Why the hell would you want a record deal? With the platforms we have access to today, you can go directly to your audience. Might as well be an independent artist and hire a distribution company. Keep your 80% of your creation and use 20% to get it out there.
These shady business practices hurt the development of Hip Hop. They had to wait 30 years to liberate their catalog and have the ability to continue to create & distribute their art. Just imagine if De La Soul and all of the legends were able to continuously create all this time. These legends existed during a time when all forms of Hip Hop existed: conscious, trap, gangsta, political, etc.
Their situation took them and most of the pioneers out of rotation. This allowed the labels chart the course and only allow drill and trap music to exist. No offense to those who love those two forms of rap, but we as people consist of more than drug selling, drug use and the same or similar sound across a majority of the new artists today. What a boring time in Hip Hop the labels have created!
It hurt our community to lose legends like De La Soul and countless pioneers out of rotation. It is fine for the music to evolve. That is how we got artists like J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Conway the Machine, Lupe Fiasco and G Herbo. Top 75 rappers not even being played on the radio! A money stack phone, auto tune and lifted whip is the uniform of these artists that will flame out in just a few years. It is a damn shame!

I agree to an extent, but the reason why people still want label deals is because major labels still have connections and budgets for things like promotion that it is much more difficult to get as an independent. It sounds easier to be independent, but in reality, it's much harder, riskier and expensive, and you will still need connections and people on your "team" that know what they are doing. If you aren't actually an artist or musician and haven't actually tried to make it in the industry then you may not understand.

You are right having them connection is key prime example Lupe Fiesco dope lyricist probably top 30 but the problem is he should have been doing the same thing Kendrick lamer and J Cole on the big stage for the past decade. Calling Obama a terrorist was a bad look for him and getting into it with the label was not good in the end . I learned sometimes in life you gotta play the game. Sometimes you just gotta shut up play the game. Watch your mouth and pay close attention to who you have relationship with and who have connections to who independent should be the goal in the long run. But you also gotta have knowledge of the industry and how it works. See they love Kendrick lamer is able to put out the weirdest music and that shit boom everywhere it doesn't go underrated he even won a Grammy off thar shit. Because Kendrick lamer was smart he played they game now the only thing that shocked me with him is he left TDE I didn't see that coming. Same thing with J.Cole he understand the industry so he not completely thrown out he got connections.

@@phillytnoize I have worked in the industry at many levels. The labels dangle the carrot of connections and resources. But at what cost? 360° deal that owns your identity, artist persona and any other business dealings for a recoupable million dollar advance amongst a stable of artists that sound the same. This practice produces cheap labor from artists uneducated about the business. Without a dynamic sound, the artist has little chance for longevity because they are replaceable with another artist with similar sound. 3-5 album deals dependent on streaming revenue isn't profitable for the artist taking home only 20% and owes the label well over a million starting out. Most of the labels do little to develop the artist look, sound and stage presence. The shows are terrible, so they aren't able to sell out arenas all over the world like the artists that pioneered and pushed Hip Hop to where it is today. There was a time when the artists in shitty record deals could still win with touring.
Now these guys have terrible shows. Aren't encouraged to collab with veterans who own their own labels and masters to keep them ignorant to the business and limit their vision beyond what they are being told about the business. Still they give up that 80% and still have endure being preyed on by Tickmaster and Live Nation for their tour money.
Unless you're doing trap and drill rap, you're not getting much radio play in the U.S. Artists who provide unique musical experiences are appreciated in other major markets like Europe, China, Canada and Africa. The great artists are lost in the sea of music in streaming services and aren't making much for fan support.
So what about signing a record deal with a major label is great today? Same sound and almost a guarantee that their career will be dead within 2 albums. Better off taking your music direct to the consumers with a distro deal and putting the content on the streaming platforms yourself.
