    I actually enjoyed Rhythm of War. I know a big complaint is the “why are all these characters super broken still” thing…. But Rhythm of War took the time to finally explain WHY some of these characters, like Shallan, are broken. Not only that, but we FINALLY got both Shallan and Kaladin on a path to HEAL. This book felt like it was meant to show how strained bonds can be, and how it takes WORK and TIME to set things on a course to heal those strained bonds and make them stronger.
    We also have some incredibly hyped moments, like Kaladin finally getting his armor and Navani becoming a radiant. Genuinely, this book was great. I would consider it one of the weaker entries in the series, but slightly weak is a much different term than “the worst.” There isn’t a “worst” Stormlight book, as they are all incredibly enjoyable reads.
    Also, first.

    23:32 i think its important to note that as series progress, people who enjoy the earlier books or are just generally fans of the author are more likely to continue reading than those who are more critical. I think its pretty likely that those who had problems with pacing in Oathbringer would have rated RoW even lower, but many of them (as seen by review count) did not read/rate RoW. So having a consistent review score is actually not necessarily a positive thing.

  • @sonanomander
    @sonanomander 17 дней назад +7

    I spent the last two months re-reading all four books and currently 20% into book 5 now
    Personally, RoW is absolutely at the bottom for all the the reasons you presented. It’s funny how Navani and the rest of Urithiru’s population captivity story wasn’t enjoyable, when the entirety of Kaladin’s story in the first book was a captivity plotline.
    Venli and Eshonai’s flashbacks weren’t enjoyable because Brandon had to steal all the reveals he planned for them to introduce in earlier books, because he realized it was ineffective to hold POV’s on singer culture for so long and needed them much earlier. Brandon wrote RoW knowing the flashbacks had no new lore drops for readers. Venli also is just not a compelling or interesting character outside her service to the plot, the flashbacks gave room to have readers sympathize with Venli but it wasn’t done so.
    I do not feel like Raboniel was an effective antagonist. It was never felt like a back and forth between her and Navani, Raboniel had complete control of the situation the entire time. I felt like neither skill on Navani’s effort or arrogance on Raboniel’s part that Navani won in the end. Raboniel spared Navani’s life too many times to be reasonable even if she respected her. Instead I feel like Navani had her victory because it felt like Sanderson needed her to be and couldn’t find a better way to deliver that.
    Lastly, I think we just lack the interesting world and dynamic established in the previous books. The drama between the highprinces was fun. It was fun learning that Sebarial is a lazy genius, Sadeas is an effective conniving bastard, Aladar is selfish as nobles can be but still will do what’s right, Amaram was the perfect honorable man that was truly vain and evil inside. We lost the drama between princedoms when we had to focus on kingdoms, and things really feel like they’re falling apart when entire kingdoms are only represented by 1-3 thinly characterized people (Yanagawn and Noura for Azir, Fen and Kmakl for Thaylen, Taravangian and Adrotagia for Jah Keved).
    The scope of the narrative got too big while also being too small at the same time.

    To me the development of the relationship between Navani and Raboniel, and the emotional struggle Kaladin goes through in order to forgive himself and accept the impossibility of protecting all those he loves, as well as the ascension of Taravangian to godhood, were worth the five stars I gave to this book. Moreover, being a physics student myself, the focus on the ‘magical physics’ that governs the planet of Roshar was one of the aspects that I enjoyed the most.

    • @r.charlie
      @r.charlie 16 дней назад

      That's super interesting. As another physics student, the science of magic presented was one of the things that annoyed me most - not at all because it was badly thought out or realized (in fact, Sanderson's grasp of science repeatedly impresses me), but because the way it was written felt repetetive and like readers were being talked down to rather than trusting them to grasp concepts the first time round. I understand that that's part of what makes his books more accessible however, so it likely just doesn't jive well with me personally (also as someone who grew up on SF books that just drop you right in it).

    Rhythm was the the worst for me, partially because I read it 8 months after I read the previous 3 one after the other right away (the 4th wasn’t released in my language yet). I thought I remembered enough but it turned out I forgot a lot of the small mysteries about the world, which I felt were important to enjoy the plotlines of this book. On the other hand, it has a dog and a dragon chapter, which is one of the best things Brandon ever wrote 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @cronkthebookguy
      @cronkthebookguy  17 дней назад +1

      Agreed! Dog and dragon is beautiful.
      Yes, Stormlight is tricky like that. There's a lot of 'small' mystery that you forget by the time the next book comes out. It sneaks up on you!

    I'm in the minority that ranks RoW as one of my favorites. And it was the science and political intrigue between Navani and the Fused and internally with the Fused and Adolin and shallan's plotlines that made me love it so much. I think the only part that I really struggled with was the flashbacks never really hooked me. In Oathbringer, the flashbacks were almost the sole thing that kept me reading on...

    • @trennamcmullin9437
      @trennamcmullin9437 15 дней назад +1

      I agree with you! I loved the science and all the shadesmar stuff, wasn't hugely hooked by the flashbacks, but I can appreciate how they fit into the narrative as a whole. I'd still probably rank Way of Kings and Words of Radiance higher, if forced to choose, but I think I'd put Rhythm of War ahead of Oathbringer (I don't know how or where I'd rank book 5, it's still too fresh.)
      Just goes to show that some things that really work for one person don't for others 🤷‍♀️, even within a fandom or amongst people who overall still love the book.

    It was the captivity plot line I had issue with. It felt like it dragged for so long… which I guess it really did since it was 700 pages. lol. I actually liked the science plot line. And, I didn’t hate the flashbacks, but they didn’t feel quite as compelling as the others. And you did well explaining why. Great video!

    You can share knowledge and still be self indulgent. The science stuff is boring in the beginning when we basically get walls of explanation text. But it does get better.
    Reading is funny but I found the pacing for this better than Oathbringer. I liked at the character stuff and liked that we got less action. I also called Kaladin “twist” - I felt it was pretty well laid out. Not sure I would call it a twist

    Yeah my main problems with my initial reading experience were the science, the flashbacks, and kaladin going from amazing hero to sad boy. Once I got to the end of the book I realized Kaladin's arc was actually even more amazing given where it was going. There was a point though where Kal was handing out blankets while the tower was getting invaded and I was at my limit. After WaT I'm starting to realize how important the sciency stuff actually was. I might even go back and read those chapters again. The flashbacks are objectively boring though. I could barely get through them on the first read along with everything else. I would probably rank it the lowest just because my first reading experience was tough but it is still a great book.

    Sometimes I wonder if, in some alternate universe, Brandon Sanderson is a niche author who wrote a handful of short books and then vanished into obscurity. I'm half in jest, but I do wonder if the books from Oathbringer onward would have overall better quality if the series was "only" five books long.

    RoW feels to me like a pressure cooker. Our heroes have spent 3 books making progress and building momentum, and then the lid gets slammed down on them. Each of our protagonists now has to find a way to work with the pressure or else be broken by it. The loss of each node serves well as a pressure gauge. Navani's decision making gets more desperate (though no less cunning and calculated) as total loss becomes not just imminent but seemingly inevitable.
    My wife kept getting frustrated that Navani trusted her captor, but I think Navani showed wisdom and keen forethought in doing so. Yes, in doing so she sacrificed the fruits of her labor to the enemy, but she always found a way to use that to her advantage. Navani shows that she's not just Dalinar's partner; she is every bit his equal.

    Even though I love Words of Radiance the most out of the whole series, I would never state that RoW is worse. Each of the books is wonderful in its way. I absolutely loved Navani in this one and was happy to finally see some healing for Kaladin and Shallan. And the story about the dog and the dragon is my favorite scene ever with Wit. At the same time, I think this one has the least favorite flashbacks as I am not really invested in Venli’s story.

    I've gotta be honest.... I'm not sure there's an audiobook narrator I hate more than Michael Kramer 😅there are actually a lot of online threads about how irritating people find his narration so I definitely wouldn't say he's the best in the business (his wife's fine imo. kinda mid but inoffensive. but I also listen to ~300 audiobooks per year, >400 this year, so I have a pretty wide pool to compare against)
    I actually realized while trying to read Yumi that it was specifically his narration (since my opinion of the text was jarringly different between chapters, immersion reading with the ebook) and now I can't tell if I dislike the recent Sandersons that I read, or if switching from physical only to almost entirely audio only was what made my experiences so much worse.

    It a truly terrible book. It felt like he know how the book was going to start and end but had no idea for the middle and it shows. He also mentioned somewhere that originally the book was supposed to set in Rall Elorim but then changed it to Urithru which lends credence to the idea. Adding to that, it retreads on previously stated issues, is extremly bloated, has the worst editing to boot, has the worse 'science part; of a fantasy book, has an utterly pointless flashbacks and introduces the most one dimensional villian in Lezian. It's a book that never should have been released

      After getting back to the video now that christmas is over. I think a lot of the things people complain about happen to be things that I loved about this book. The weakest point is the flashbacks, but I liked getting some context for that background decisionmaking that Venli had, as well as some context for what lead to what we'd already seen. But that they weren't relevant to the next chapters, it is true that they felt more meaningless on the first read.

      First, I fully respect making something your favourite purely out of spite. That's literally my motivation for like 80% of my life choices.
      Also you're right. There are a lot of Stormlight plotlines that are considered unpopular, and they 'just so happen' to be focused around women. It's similar to all the accusations of 'bad writing' that female-led movies get. I think a lot of people are not self-aware of their gender prejudice. They hold women to different standards to the men. Eg, arrogant men are cool and badass, arrogant women are annoying. 🤨There's definitely a lot of that in the Stormlight fandoms. And god, they freaking hate it when you point it out!
      It's an ongoing discussion.
