    Thanks Richard. All l do is apply a clear satin oil based varnish, sanding between coats with a 220 grit paper. Cheers mate

    I made this today and I'm happy with it. I used pallet wood for everything except the glasses holder for which I used a fence slat. I need to be careful and not "mill" the wood too much and lose it's rusticness. It's amazing to me how beautiful crummy old wood, that most people think is garbage, can become. Cheers Knackers !

      Roger Bower Well done Roger! I'm totally with you, it's important to leave some of the character on the wood. That's what it's all about. Cheers mate

    Thanks Kansaboy. Mate l use the marine grade varnish because it's what l had left over from another job. It does have advantages though especially if you intend to have your project live outside. Cheers mate

    Was not too sure about your project at first, but it turned out pretty snazzy......looks very nice. I especially like the effect of the front board that is incomplete, it really gives off the rustic feel. Don't forget the malbec!

      +Anton Bouchette Thanks again Anton. I've now converted mine to a magazine rack which looks really good. I also attached a mismatch of knobs which make for a handy hat rack. Cheers :-)

    G'day Philip. Thanks for the comment mate. I used old fence palings for the bottom of the rack to sit the bottles on. I just fitted and nailed them between the front and back pallet boards. You can use any old timber really just as long as it is recycled as you can see it from underneath. You want it to blend in. Cheers mate

    Came to this video after the one about separating a pallet (even sawzalling a few proved to be a task cause some pallets just have a harder life than others) but I loved the look of the wine rack so had to come see what you did to it to make it look so good. I'm building a computer desk (but could be any sort of work surface) out of pallets because the cost of a new desk built with the dimensions and shelving like I want would be out of this world. (okay, I'm just cheap haha) It's a bit crude since I'm just measuring and just winging everything as I go, but you sure have helped me with your videos so just wanted to say thanks and cheers from North Carolina.

  • @christopherrenaud7750
    @christopherrenaud7750 10 лет назад

    Great video and idea. I'm going to make the shelf and store something else though. It's better to have wine laying horizontally rather than vertically.

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  10 лет назад +1

      Thanks Christopher. We don't keep our wine long enough for standing up to be an issue :-) Cheers mate

    • @SW-zu7ve
      @SW-zu7ve 10 лет назад

      Why would it matter if the wine is horizontal? It doesn't matter at all. You only need to put the bottle horizontally if the bottle has a cork to keep the cork from drying out. None of those bottles have a cork therefore laying them horizontally does absolutely nothing.

    Thank you for this great video. I attempted it, but found the rusted nails were preventing me from disassembling the pallet. I was splitting and otherwise damaging the wood.

  • @Pricejosh49

      Yeah, pretty sure it doesn't say how you made the base to hold the wine bottles.

    • @andypitz1
      @andypitz1 7 лет назад +1

      Installing the bottom was skipped over you're right. It looks like two pieces make up the bottom. I think he just measured the inside dimensions of the two rectangular openings, from the edges to the middle support, on each side and glued/nailed in two pieces of wood so they are flush with the support in the middle and with both sides. The three spacer blocks that hold the slotted piece for the wine glasses get attached to the bottom. You can see at 4:17 the two rectangular openings that are filled in and become the bottom.

    what'd you use to cut the 3 framing pieces like that? And are they 2 x 4's from pallet?

      Lee Garcia Yes Lee, they're from the pallet and l cut them with a circular saw and finished the cuts off with a hand saw. good luck.

    I am having difficulty with the slotted board breaking in between the slots. I am drilling the hole in the middle of the board and creating the slot every 5 inches. Any suggestions as to alleviate this issue?

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Rochelle. One of the tricks is to find a dense board as they are less prone to breaking. I know what you are referring to but it just takes patience and a steady hand. If they do break off you can glue them back in place with the aid of a nail which has the hole predrilled prior to banging in the nail. Good luck
