    Botanica newbie and I am considering this homogenizer ...I appreciate the time you took to conduct this experiment and share it. I definitely want a homogenizer and I almost ordered the same model but I want one on a stand and they seem to be almost triple the cost. Thanks again Sylvia

All my samples are separating after a few hours...was long at home (maternity leave). But I work with a SOP and there is "2 mins" written and much high shear rate....asked colleques...they are just doing it and it works....

    • @kandacesilvola
      @kandacesilvola  2 года назад

      Hi! It's hard to say without knowing your formula, emulsifier etc. With any emulsifier, always consult the usage rate, they are all different. Also, what temperature your phases are at when combining them is important. Some emulsifiers do well with high shear and others do not. The equipment you use to emulsify also makes a difference. I don't know if you've had formal training but I would recommend checking out Formula Botanica. They are having a free masterclass right now and have lives discussing all these topics. Refer to my recent video on the masterclass and you can use my link in that description to access the masterclass. Happy formulating!

      Yes, but it functions better at an angle. It’s purpose is not to incorporate air, you hold it beneath the surface during its entire use.

    Hi. Homogenizers are best to be used in batches that are over 300 grams. Olivem 1000 is an oil in water emulsifier, how come you added the water to the oil? I know it can be done how you did it but the consistency will be different. You did not use a preservative either.

    • @kandacesilvola
      @kandacesilvola  Год назад +1

      I’m not using this, it’s an experiment, so no need to use a preservative. Every homogenizer differs in batch size, this size works for the homogenizer I have. There are plenty of styles that homogenize and much smaller batch sizes and others that require a much larger batch size. Every emulsifier is different, so with Olivem1000 I add water to the oil. Other emulsifiers may require a different method, it depends on each individual emulsifier not whether it’s O/W or W/O. Happy formulating.

    • @kandacesilvola
      @kandacesilvola  3 года назад +2

      It depends on the type of formula you want to make. Is it w/o or o/w, do you have a lot of cool down ingredients that are oil soluble? Maybe you want a cold process emulsifier if you do. How large is your oil phase? Some emulsifiers take a large oil phase, others only take a small oil phase. What is the texture you are wanting to achieve? Runny or thin or sprayable, or thick and rich? Look at the different emulsifiers on the market and read their descriptions. There are so many to choose from. Get a few that match what you want to achieve and try them out. ⚗️👩🏼‍🔬

    What is the actual difference between a homogenizer and an immersion blender, cause they look very similar in appearance, use, and other things. Also can you use an immersion blender for making emulsions?

    • @kandacesilvola
      @kandacesilvola  3 года назад +1

      You can use an immersion blender. The difference between the two is that an immersion blender can incorporate air into your formula. Also, a homogenizer gives better stability to your product because it’s able to decrease the size of the particles.

    Can you please explain if there is any specific reason for the temperature that you have taken?

    • @kandacesilvola
      @kandacesilvola  3 года назад +1

      I take the temperature of my formulas as they heat up. I want them to reach a certain temperature based on manufacturer recommendations. It’s usually around 70-80 degrees Celsius. I want the oil phase and water phase to be the same temperature when I combine them. Then, as it cools I continue to take the temperature so I know when to add the cool down phase and any temperature sensitive ingredients. That’s usually around 40 degrees Celsius or less.

    Hi! What's the reason for setting the homogenizer on 2 instead of a higher speed? I've noticed one of my emulsions separating and was wondering if setting the homogenizer on a higher speed could be the reason why.

    • @kandacesilvola
      @kandacesilvola  2 года назад +1

      You want to set the correct speed so it doesn’t introduce air into the formula. Also, I don’t want the formula to fly out of the beaker. Best to start low and work your way up as needed. Make sure you check the specifications with every emulsifier you use. Some emulsifiers can only take a small amount of high shear, others require it. Too much shear can break some emulsions.
