John Reed was what got me hooked all my life on G&S. At age 7, my grandmother gave me the D'Oyly Carte Mikado on LP. Twenty years later, I actually met Reed during one of the company's last international tours after a performance of Iolanthe at L.A.'s Greek Theater. He was gracious and unassuming, pleased to know how much he'd influenced my life. A true gentleman in the classic mold. I'll hear his voice in my ears with intense fondness until my dying day.
? I've seen this Mikado in its entirety and I believe it's one of the most beautifully done Productions I've ever seen and I've seen a lot in my 84 years and I believe it comes from maybe Canada I can't remember right now just wonderful though you can find it on the web costumes magnificent. I really enjoyable watch
I came across this in a book today. I started singing it. It brought back memories for me from my childhood that had been forgotten. What a pleasure to hear this. Thank you

The only thing I didn't really like about this scene was that all the nobles looked pretty much the same. If I were to stage this, 2 would be shinto senior priests, 2 would be armored samurai, 2 would be dutch diplomats-in-residence, and the remaining 3 would be the conventional nobles we see here.
The thing is that the Mikado isn't based on actual Japanese society. Its based on the English one back then and the Japanese stuff is just decoration, like how the Pirate stuff is decoration for Pirates of Penzance.
Frankly, no. That would make it somewhat, even if in a nincompoop fashion, mirror Japanese society and the characters to be found there. It was never meant to be anything but a parody of ENGLISH - not even British! - society, and anything additional in Japanese would have messed it up.

John Reed is my favorite version of Ko-Ko. Hands down. I love this opera, and John Reed’s performance solidified my choice a long time ago.
Absolutely. John Reed - in any G & S - brilliant.
I AGREE!!! because the way how he sings reminds me of Zazu!
Gilbert and Sullivan grossly underrated composers. Music and lyrics great. Mp
They are almost certainly among the most famous composers in history, "underrated" they are not. I do not think you fully know what that ord means.
@tr7938 He clearly meant underappreciated. Don't hate :)
Gilbert was the playwright - sullivan was the composer.
@@lorrainesekera4100oh, come on. It is a ridiculous thing to say.
I remember my high school doing a production of the Mikado

The way Ko-ko is slightly pigeon-toed is too precious
What a superb voice ,just fabulous ,their are not many people with a singing voice like that !!!!!
Oh! This is the exact tempo and pronunciation. Thanks.
Class of 1996 st Andrews school. This was a good play.

Was that Book “Consciousness Explained” by Daniel Dennett? Because that’s what brought me here just now.
For me the best version on RUclips, I've got it on DVD. Love it...
Thank you so much for sharing this Jewel!!!
youre doing a great job as usual.
Thanks Colin.
I sang this to myself (not out loud) in an accent similar to the actor's, and it got me thinking: I might make a good role for Ko-Ko.

This should be released on Blu Ray. This is much better than the Hollywood 1939 version, the only version I can find in HD.
And now... I am free to sing all the Gilbert and Sullivan I damn well please!
Can I please buy a dvd version of this superior version from you? This audio is amazing.

Agreed. In the 1987 version, even though all the nobles wore black, they did all have very different appearances.

Perfection
John Reed is the true successor of George Grossmith. Only he and Grossmith did koko's role brilliantly and as visioned by G&S themselves
You saw them both?
What about Martyn Green? He's often lauded as the greatest of the comic baritones.
I’ve only heard this song outside of the context of its original production. What is the lyrical meaning of the executioner’s portion of the piece?
Would you say that the Zodiac Killer had good taste in musicals?
I remember this from the serial killer avatar 😮
