How Did Sierra Leone Get its Name?

  • Sierra Leone is one of only three countries founded as a home of freed slaves brought back to the African continent after abolition of slavery hence the name of the capital Freetown; it is the world’s first country to declare the smartest nonhuman primate, the Chimp as a national animal. Despite being on the same page on many of the country’s issues, contention is rife among historians on one little nagging matter surrounding the origin of the name Sierra Leone or Salone as the locals call it.
    How could a predominantly Muslim, English-speaking, African country have an Italian name? There was never an Italian presence in this region of Africa so why in the world is there an ex-British colony with slaves returning from America, slaves who had fought on the British side during the American war of independence, carrying an Italian name? How did Sierra Leone get its Name?

      @theafricachild5773 Jamaican Hidden Histories "Maroons The Spanish settlers escaped to Cuba with their valuables, freeing many of their slaves, who took to the hills. These were the earliest Maroons, who were mostly African born, or of mixed African and Taino blood. The Maroons spent years fighting to maintain their freedom, forcing the British to acknowledge them as a formidable enemy. They communicated their defiance and celebration through traditional African drumming and use of the abeng."

    Sierra Leone is a Portuguese name. It means Mountain Lion which is what the Europeans that first made contact with the natives saw on arrival.
    Sierra = Mountain
    Leone = Lion

    Either way the name should be changed! It wasn't named by Afrikans. We have to stop allowing colonizers to name us and stop accepting this.
